    I was a nurse in a burn unit for many years. I have to caution you about having an open flame in a vehicle. I understand you're in a challenging situation. Please just take extra extra extra precaution to keep flammables away from the flames.... your hair, your puffer jacket, your bedding are all flammable, and could ignite your car quickly. We'd get a LOT of patients living in tents and vehicles that were badly burned from fires relating to cooking and heating, or using candles for decor.

    I lived in my car for 4 months back in 2018. It was absolutely exhausting. I slept in the front with the seat down. I would wash my face and fix my hair in McDonald’s washrooms and leave for work in the morning. Couple times a week I would shower at truck stops. After those 4 months I saved enough to secure a place to live. All of us have our reasons for having to resort to living in cars. To anyone reading this.. hang in there. Don’t give up. Do what you need to do to survive.

    I have been there too. With and without a car. I lived in an abandoned house in Detroit that only had a roof over the last bedroom upstairs. I made the best of it once you were in you couldn't tell that's where you were. We're survivors. My experiences living in a car were done traveling. I found ways to make enough to get by everyday. Swam in rivers for baths used a spray bottle water and bronners 10/90 to wash. Many blessings to you. I hope you own your own home and if you don't I hope you will soon. Check your state for programs there's down payment assistance and tons of inventory.

    Im a really old grandma and grew up not evening knowing such adventures were out their waiting for me. Best advice for young adults today would be to get out there, try everything once and you’ll know if you had a great time or if you’ll never do it again .. but at least you can say “I did that” I went there” “i sat in a hot spring in the middle of winter”. This girl has guts and I love her sense of adventure, and she will succeed in every way because she’s not scared of trying and stepping out of her comfort zone .

    @Rosa a cheap way to keep your car warm is to get an auto start system. Most stereo installation shops carry them. It comes with a key fob that'll work just like your current fob, except you can start the engine from up to 300 yards away. You wouldn't need to get out of your sleeping bags. CHEERS from Colorado

    Hi Rosa, to keep warm when it’s that cold. Get a large water bottle (Not the insulated ones) filled it up with hot water , put it in a sock 🧦 then wrapped it in an extra warm jacket if you have one. Put it between your thighs when you are laying in your sleeping bag. Make sure you put it in a sock and then wrap it in a jacket so you don’t burn yourself. It will keep you warm for the entire night, with your body heat and the bottle of hot water between your thighs. You’d be warm, and comfortable throughout the night. I hike a lot in cold weather, so I know that works.

    Little tip that may help in cold areas. Get yourself a couple melon sized rocks that you can heat by a fire. Pull them away from the fire for about 30 minutes. Wrap them in a towel and place it at the foot of your blanket and you'll stay warm/hot all night. Just make sure they're not rocks that are from a river. Over exposure to moisture can cause the rocks to explode when heated due to steam.

    My cousin had a Joni handwarmer that was as big as a breadbox for deer hunting. We always laughed about that but he was the only one that was ever warm. He would shoot a buck, field dress it, then put the handwarmer inside the body cavity. Buy the time he dragged it back to camp the steaks were cooked for dinner. Seagrams and a deer steak for everybody.

    Ur a brave soul I love it. I do live in a vehicle, but it’s a truck camper so it’s quite easy. I used to chase the snow for snowboarding around the country in winter. I learned all kinds of tricks to stay warm. I’m glad you’re warming your car up in the middle of the night that makes sense. I’ve got a diesel truck so I’ve got a remote start and I was able to warm it up once in a while when it got that cold. At least you’re not dealing with diesel. Anyways, love the adventure take care.

    I wouldn’t sleep overnight in dangerous temperatures outside except on or near a 24 hour place in case your car freezes and you’re stranded. I would then commute to Hotsprings. And if in an area where its no phone reception irregardless of weather- please invest in SOS/Emergency Satellite phone ( research more popular now) that’s sends a help with location beacon.

    Wow! What an incredible spot for a hot spring! Off the top of my head,have you ever thought of putting a piece of cardboard over the front of your vehicles radiator.(I don’t know if even possible w/element) Years ago I drove a box truck in winter and we all would do this to improve heat inside the cab.(w/zip ties or wire)Basically slows down cold air blowing over the radiator & may heat up “a bit” quicker. be careful in this cold weather. I got sick during a chinook when everything was melting, getting slushy and the humidity was way high. I caught a nasty chest cold possible pneumonia but I haven't had any fever. I started losing my voice a few days ago and I'm coughing pretty harsh since last week. I lived in a car back in 2005, was in a few shared places from 2006 and 2007 but kept getting evicted. I bought a van and converted it from scratch and lived in it for 7 years. Then I bought my first motorhome in 2014 and lived in it for 7 years while making tons of modifications to it. I upgraded to a slightly bigger motorhome in 2021 and it took me 3 winters to make more improvements to the insulation but right now I don't drive it with an expired plate. I've been biking all over the city to get around

    Rosa, advice for next time. Dont turn on the heater the moment you turn on your car. Make sure everything is off. Start the car with the heat off, any electronics, etc. Then once the car starts to warm up on the temp guage finallt turn the heat on low, and then gradually turn it up. Dont just start the car on with the heat on full blast when its below zero like that.

  • @nomaderic

    @nomaderic

    3 ай бұрын

    @herlastvoyage starting the car is what takes most of the battery. When it's super cold like that your battery is already weakened some, so you just wanna make sure all the power is focused on getting the car started and not running the heater and all the other electronics. Your oil my also be thickened slightly and everything just needs a little bit of time to get going. That's why most cars make that horrible noise when they get started in negative temps. Besides, when it's that cold even if you turn the heater on full blast as soon as you start the car it's not gonna blow hot air anyways. All you're doing is slowing the down the engine from warming up. Once the temp guage starts warming up then you'll start getting hot air as the engine is now warm and the heater will pull from that. I'm not saying she's gonna ruin her car by doing what she's doing, it's just one of those things that makes it easier on the car.
