Living in Fernley - Reno, Nevada

Fernley was established east of Reno in 1904 amidst the construction of railroads in Northern Nevada. The area eventually grew into an agricultural and ranching region made possible by the Newlands Irrigation Project. Fernley transitioned from a community of agriculture into an industrial one and now has evolved into a booming technology town welcoming Forbes 500 companies like Amazon and Tesla.

The city is less than 30 miles east of Reno and Sparks via Interstate 80, allowing residents easy access to the neighboring cities but with affordable housing opportunities. You can also reach Fernley by Highway 50, nicknamed the “Loneliest Road in America” by Life magazine in 1986.
Fernley Village Marketplace is a convenient shopping center on Interstate 80 with a neighborhood Raley’s, Pizza Factory, Steve’s Homemade Ice Cream, and a Renown Health Urgent Care.
Across West Newlands Drive, you can find the Ranch House Restaurant inside the Silverado Casino, a Fernley favorite for more than 25 years. The Silverado Casino is one of only two casinos in town. The Fernley Nugget is only a mile from Silverado. The Fernley Nugget offers a range of gaming opportunities like sports wagering, table games, and live keno. Go next door to enjoy a meal at the Black Bear Diner, a Northern Nevada favorite.
Fernley Out of Town Park is an essential recreational area for the city. The park features baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, a playground, and a rodeo arena. The Out of Town Dog Park is at the southeastern corner of the park, making this park a central meeting point for athletic residents, children, and pets. Pet owners can also spend a day with their furry friends at the Green Valley Dog Park, closer to the southern edge of Fernley.
Fernley Swimming Pool is a popular year-round attraction offering an indoor swimming pool and outdoor splash park. Swim lessons, aqua fitness, water walking, and event space rentals are also available at this center. The Fernley BMX Track is a fantastic track for bikers, hosting local and qualifying races throughout the year. The course is full of young bikers most Sundays, with practice throughout the week and the occasional Saturday race.
The Golf Club at Fernley is an 18-hole golf course in the eastern part of the city sitting at the base of the Fernley Wildlife Management Area. This public golf course has a variety of annual pass options for your avid golfer. Visitors can practice on the driving range or choose from two practice greens then head to the Clubhouse’s snack bar.
Fort Churchill State Historic Park is 30 minutes south of Fernley, near the Lahontan State Recreation Area in Silver Springs. Fort Churchill’s ruins still stand providing a glimpse into what was once a shelter to early settlers of the area. Buckland Station was established in 1870 as the new Pony Express stop and home of the Buckland family. You can still tour the pioneer home, located within Fort Churchill State Park.
Lyon County School District serves the city of Fernley through Fernley Elementary School and Fernley Intermediate School, found next door to each other on Hardie Lane. Fernley Intermediate School once was the site of Fernley High School, before it moved locations to below the hillside Fernley “F” in 1980. The home to the Vaqueros was founded in 1928, and today it offers joint enrollment with Western Nevada College. This program allows students to work towards a high school diploma and an associate’s degree simultaneously.

Looking to relocate to Fernley possibly, as we would like some property and would enjoy recreational activities located right outside of our back yard basically.
