My husband was born there, but he didnt remember it, the family moved to Chicago when he was 7, but he akways desired to see it, which he never did because he was so busy working and providing for his family.

If you are familiar with Harper Lee's book "To Kill a Mockingbird" then you will know all about Canton. I was born there in 1944 while my family lived in Canton and stayed there until the early 1950s. I have fond later memories of visiting my grandparents, uncles and cousins while growing up, after we moved to Texas. While reading the book I identified with the character "Cousin Dill", who visited his cousins every summer in the fictional small Alabama town of Maycomb which to me was so similar to Canton. The scenes from the book which are set in the courthouse seemed identical to Canton. My uncle was a lawyer, with an office on the town square in Canton just across from the courthouse, just like Atticus Finch in the book (move over Gregory Peck). I loved the line in the first paragraphs of the book...."Ladies bathed before noon, after their three-o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frostings of sweat and sweet talcum". That is the kind of thing that I remember about Canton. I recently visited there after 40 years and found that not so much had changed and it felt very much like the old home town of my childhood.
