Sam and I finally decided to open up and talk about the disabilities we face, and how we face them together. Today, we're giving tips to the able-bodied friends and family in your lives in order to make YOUR life easier and safer.
About Me: I'm Yasmine Galenorn, NYT, PW, and USA Today bestselling author. I have over 70 books on the shelf, spent 20 years in traditional publishing, and for the past 4 years, I've been an indie author. I write urban fantasy and paranormal romance, and in the past--paranormal mysteries and nonfiction metaphysical work. I've been in the Craft for 40 years of my life, am a Pagan Priestess, a Reiki Master, and am heavily inked. I cope with MCAD/MCAS (mast cell activation syndrome), histamine intolerance, food allergies, and back issues.
About Samwise: Samwise is a computer geek/nerd, is into videogames and he has a web comic on our site. He used to do contract work for IT companies until the recruiters started assuming his disability meant he couldn't do the job. So now he helps me out with my business, formats my books, and does web work for me. He has Type 1 diabetes, and received the diagnosis of ALS in 2004, is still independent and able to get around, but his disabilities are quite obvious, compared to mine which are invisible.

Thank you for putting this together....the information is so valuable. Also, so much fun to see the fur babies taking an interest in things, too! Thank you again!

I really appreciate all this information! I do my best to be thoughtful and considerate, but you just never know sometimes when you overstep your boundaries. Thank you. 🥰

Sam said what I been trying to tell people, in short, ask first before assumption. When trying to help someone with disabilities. I also have chronicle pains and hearing loss issues. People Assume that yelling at and speaking very loud help me. But it doesn’t. I need for people to speak, in front of me, so I can see what their are saying, and speak slowly and clearly. So thank you Sam. Every person with disabilities have different needs.

Love this series! Sam hit the nail on the head for me many times as did you. Trust the person with the disability to know their own limits. I am physically disabled. I have had people automatically assume that because I have a physical disability that I am mentally diabled as well. Just cause you have one does not mean you have the other. Love you both! You are such an inspiration!

There are SO many factors in this video that I've never considered--and I try so hard to be considerate! The balance-threshold issue. Airborne nut issues. This one will need a rewatch or two!

That's one reason we're doing these--to help people to be aware. Because a lot of people have very good intentions that can really go awry and I do feel bad when correcting them, but good intentions *can* be dangerous at times. :)

Thanks for sharing your tips. I walk with a cane and people that think they know me have asked "what's with the cane" ( I typically stay home so when I have a change people tend to notice) Not everyone wants to explain what is going on with their health. That and it's know ones business. Just because you may been acquainted with someone doesn't mean you have to share your life story.

I'm so happy you two are doing this series. These are things that people need to know amd think about. I have asthma along with other pain issues. I wish people would consider not wearing smelly things such as perfume or cologne. It's aassive trigger for me. If you feel the need to wear things of that nature, I wish it would be something you use in the bath or shower so that the water helps dissipates some of the aroma.

Or understand that I know what my limits are and that I will go till I know I should stop. Don't try to make me do what you think is right for me.

I have very few perfumes I can wear anymore, and I love them, but home is the only place I wear them. If I am expecting to go out, I don't put them on. Because yeah, most fragrances trigger me and I KNOW what trying to breathe around a cloud of perfume is like.

Thank you both so much for speaking not only for yourselves but for others of us. My paroxysmal Dystonia is invisible, but has progressed. I too need doors to balance often times 👍😊 Grateful that Sara Cannon recommended your channel 🤗

I am still struggling with people understanding that just because I look ok sitting, that my body is in a constant state of small contractions and that speaking on the phone or in person (or taking a shower, putting on makeup, not being on CPAP for 10+ hours) can put me in full body painful contractions and difficulty breathing for days thereafter. It affects my tongue and soft pallet too now, so saying certain words or laughing is like being kicked in the throat and chest. I try and nicely explain, but because it's invisible (I try not to let anyone see a full episode if possible), they assume I can chat on the phone or come visit or fill in the blank. Like you I have lived my life as a push througher, but in the last eight years of progression I've learned that pushing can land me in the hospital. I wish people took me at my word. They mean no harm but it makes mentally maneuvering the disorder harder.

Sometimes it's really hard to feel like people aren't being bullheaded, but I do know that sometimes friends don't want to believe we're having as much trouble as we do, so they tend to try to negate it or reassure us that we don't 'look' disabled. It does make it harder though, and I think by telling them the blunt truth, that we 'understand where they're coming from but here's the reality'...it can help.

Thank you for another great video, they are very helpful! I can’t stand when people stare at me in my wheelchair and when I look at them making direct eye contact, they don’t stop staring! I get it they’re curious what’s wrong, but please don’t be rude about it. I’ve also had strangers lay hands on me in public and pray with theatrics, It’s embarrassing! One thing I really do like is when people ask me “do you need help” and “what can I do to help” instead of just assuming something and doing it. Ps. I enjoy watching your kitties visit during videos!

Oh good gods, that's so appalling! I'm so sorry they feel they have the right to do that. I'd slap them! (I'm a little volatile when it comes to crap like that).

Yasmine Galenorn 😂 I think I might next time, they think it’s ok to lay hands on strangers, I’ll lay mine on their face, bet that will make them twice, lol

Thank you so much for sharing this it was very inspiring. I have an olfactory disorder as a result of a concussion other things and even after 5 here's some of my family refuses to acknowledge that generally everything smells horrible to me now. I'm tired of people asking if I've ever tried air freshener, which is a little insane because I believe the worst smells are Floral. I am also in the process of being assess for a mast cell disorder which my allergist did some research on during our pandemic t pause and she sent me for blood work last week. Maybe we're beginning to get an explanation? Because my family doesn't believe that I'm having allergic reactions to almost everything I eat at this point and it's getting ugly. So thanks for your words because you are giving me strength.

Gale Miller That sounds totally like a mast cell condition. Bear in mind that there are false negatives on some of those tests.

@@YasmineGalenornOfficial thank you so much for that warning! I will make sure to discuss with her what her suggested eating plan would be if it does show a negative. I have to say that I mentioned this disorder to a few people who have been on this journey with me and when they looked it up they each came back and said that was completely what they saw happening with me so I guess it's anecdotal.

@@YasmineGalenornOfficial I can see why because she didn't test me right after an episode I was tested just on a normal day. She did say that even though my Baseline was within normal parameters that it is likely that I do have this. Thanks again for bringing this to my attention!
