LIVERPOOL’S BIG STRIKER PROBLEM! | Transfer decision analysed
After Liverpool endured a disastrous month that saw them dumped out of the Europa League and fall away in the Premier League title race, the club's forwards took the majority of the blame.
But was that a fair assessment of what went wrong in that period for Jurgen Klopp's side? Or are other aspects of the team getting away with it?
And, if the Reds' strikers really were an issue, then what could be done to solve it?
Join Liverpool reporter David Lynch as he takes a deep dive into the perceived problems in front of goal this season.
Learn the truth about the Reds' finishing, how their title rivals compare, and the big questions they need to answer going into the summer transfer window.
Make sure to leave your thoughts on Liverpool's striking options and what should be done this summer in the comments.

Absolutely. You can't win anything without goals. Nunez gets a nosebleed in front of goal and Salah is profligate as well as going missing in big games. Neither of them are fit to lace Suarez's boots.

I totally agree with you. Virgil needs a fit partner with whom he form a partnership. Even in our PL winning trophy season we had Gomez fully fit and playing all games with Virgil. So we conceded less. Defence wins you trophies. We concede too many goals and hardly keep any clean sheets. It doesn't help out forwards every match. Also we need a very strong CDM. Endo is a good player to be back up. With that we will not face the burnout issue which we did with Fabinho. Endo and new CDM will do rotation in the few matches.

This is all hypothetical, depending on what Slot will prefer, but: 1. Diaz is the hardest worker our of the front 3. He's the best dribbler as well, being able to glide through opposition. Yes, he doesn't score as much, as he should and he's 27, but he's on 50k a week, so... I hear Slot likes dribblers, so we should keep him. 2. Nuñez - if we could just calm his head, so he stops thinking too much. Also, he's been very unlucky this season. But we works hard and is a pressing monster. I wouldn't say he's that young, doesn't he turn 25 soon? Maybe give him another year. 3. Gakpo - young, fast, energetic, descent dribbler, tall and can shoot well enough. He should stay. 4. Jota - the most unpredictable, in a sense you don't know how he's going to score, but very often he does. He's stronger than he looks and is a good poacher. However, if he cannot recover from these constant injuries even under the new manager (and yes, I know he's going to be just the coach), we should sell him. 5. Salah - I know he's been more of a creator this season, but I see a very big drop off. Couple that with that reoccurring injury, which is a consern and I think there's a real argument for selling him. He's 33 this year, he's on 350k a week and from what i hear and read, he doesn't want only 1 year contract extension, but at least 2. Imagine him "running down the wing" and 35. This would have been possible, IF he was taking good shots, even from outside the box. But he's not and he doesn't. So I say if an offer of 120-130 mil comes for him, sell. With Thiago also leaving, that means we wiil be saving 550k+ per week just from their wages. And invest in new big talents. Ex. Niko Williams, Leão etc...

Interesting analysis, which is bang on. So my question is this! Why do reporters not highlight these stats infront of Jurgen when questioning him. Surely also, we must have a statistical analyst who presents the same information to Jurgen? It would be interesting indeed if Klopp was asked to explain the dysfunction. Because that is what it is. Do you account for pressure 🤔. Because 6 games ago maybe more? We we on for a Qusd Dave. Manure parked a Bus 🚌 escaped with a draw. We had 29 shots. A few crept just wide or to high. One or two just darn unlucky? Picking bones, bad refereeing is something missing. In this. Because the tackle on Macca v City. Penalty awarded. The stats change. If we scored it?

Another great piece David. Appreciate the deep dive into our problem with finishing. This is a team game and I personally feel that our attacking deficiencies are only part of the reason why we didn’t win the league. The fact that we have struggled all season to keep a clean sheet is a huge factor. The pressure on the attackers to score 2 or 3 goals a game is incredibly high as they know that the defence is likely to concede 1 or more goals. If we had a better defence we would probably have won the league. Arsenal are incredibly strong at the back and we are quite poor for a team chasing a title. Our attacking players certainly have to shoulder a lot of the blame, but defensively we struggled in too many games. I agree about the set piece coach as we seem to be very dependent on VVD up front and defensively for set pieces.

You make a lot of sense, David. The data really does show that we need to improve the forward line. It sounds like Diaz is the most likely & that they’ll give Nunez one more year, with Slot’s tuition, to see if they can just get him to an average return on the amount of chances he gets. Is Gakpo at risk amongst the supporting cast? Could even two of them go? Mo’s contract is a complicated one but another season of the better version of him combined with better finishing around him could make us lethal! Can Jota stay fit more often under a new coaching & fitness team? Who could be the one or two players to come in to hopefully give us much better potency? It will be fascinating to discover through (the hopefully earlier part of) the window. Let’s hope for positive developments to give us renewed belief because mine, sadly, fell off a cliff, particularly from the crushing United disappointment.

We would have won the league easily if they could have finished their chances in a few games. United, Luton, Palace. All would have been 3 points. The forwards are fine but they think too much inside the box. They pass when they should take a shot or take a shot when they should pass. I like Diaz but if I have to see him take on a player and dribble 50 times instead of taking the shot or passing one more time, I’m gonna lose it. Their decision making is what needs a rework in the summer.

In short LFC recruitment for the last 4 years has just not been good enough and Klopp & Lijnders has been responsible for this. Some fans moan about FGS not spending enough or go on about Man City endless pot of money. But look at what Klopp & Lijnders spent Nunez 85m Diaz 45m Gakpo 40m Sozbo 60m Gravenbertch 35m Endo 10m Carvalho 6m Thiago 30m The only player that Klopp and Lijnders have signed, that I would say is consistently good is Mcallister. @@dmlynchlfc But when did the struggle happen? Precisely and astonishingly when Jones, TAA, Salah and Jota came back and were put back into the team. IMO that caused a) a disturbance in game flow and b) those players needed time to get back to shape and that meant they were not really up to the task in these moments. So I‘d argue there is literally nothing wrong. What happened to Liverpool was an indirect effect of being cursed with too many injuries.
