Liverpool Has Beaches? - OMG I Was Shocked!
Liverpool has BEACHES! Yes and they are beautiful With miles of coastline, you’re never far from a beach in Liverpool. Come with me on a tour of the BEST beaches in Liverpool. From the marine lake at West Kirby, to the astonishing Antony Gormley statues at Crosby, heading to the beach
is a must on a sunny hot day!
Highlights include - West Kirby
At one end of West Kirby beach is sand dunes whilst at the other its sand flats and right in the centre is the popular marine lake. Grab an ice cream or a cup of coffee while you explore the 300 metres of coastline, or watch the water sports on the lake. When the tide is out, and it’s safe to do so, you can walk to Hilbre Island, a nature reserve usually cut off by the tide. If you’re lucky, you might spot seals! Paddle, bathe or just walk the promenade for a relaxing day out.
Crosby
Crosby Beach is the permanent home of “Another Place” a sculpture by Antony Gormley which sees 100 cast iron life size sculptures spread out across three kilometres looking out to the horizon. Often dressed by visitors (you might see a football scarf or two) it’s a striking display. The beach itself is non-bathing and visitors need to stay within 50 metres of the promenade. As well as the artwork this beach offers beautiful views out to sea, to Wirral and North Wales. It’s also the starting point for the 22 mile Sefton Coastal Path, great for biking.
New Brighton and Wallasey Beach
Often described as a quintessential seaside town, New Brighton was once one of the most fashionable holiday spots in the country. It still offers a great day out along the beach. The Fort Perch Rock was built as a coastal defence for the Port of Liverpool and now remains as a museum and music venue. The lighthouse still remains along the coast as well.
A little further along is Wallasey Beach, a stunning sandy stretch of coastline which is a popular bathing spot. Kite surfers can be seen on the waves and there’s plenty of free parking. It’s also a dog-friendly beach so the whole family can enjoy a day out.

Great intro to Liverpool beaches. It's a shame you didn't go a little further out to Formby. That has one of the best dunescapes in the country as well as the beach itself.; the whole thing being backed by extensive pine forests and heathland, which are protected habitats for various amphibians and red squirrels.

Unfortunately on most beaches after busy days or reasonable days they bins are overflowing as they don’t empty them many times a day like in other countries or provide enough bins and people leave slot of rubbish
I live in New Brighton Wirral and have lived in the Wirral all my life, The views and beaches we have here are incredible. I have been to Crosby beach many times too and see the statues. The Fort in New Brighton is now open with a cafe. The Queens Royal has been closed for a little while now, I did use to work there. The Arcades use to have Go Karts and was a massive attraction for the area, I use to work there too. Thank you for viewing our little peninsula, I love living here.

I remember the arcades (art deco building) before it had Go Karts in there. A lot more of the floor space was used. It had dodgems, electric Go Karts, a ghost train, Bobby horses aka carousel, one of those rides with space ships/planes on them with joystick inside, if you pulled it the plane went up and down when you pushed it forward. That lovely building may be getting knocked down soon according to one of the chippy owners from one of the back streets away from the 'front'. Something to do with drainage needing to be brought up to standard but the owner can't afford it.
Thank you for an interesting and complimentay video of an often-mocked subject. Back in the 1950s and 1960s, being from Liverpool, every summer my parents would take us to one of these beeches for a day out. Formby and Ainsdale (beyond Crosby) were my favourites as they had the dunes and woods to run riot in. I think it was at Ainsdale that they also had parked a DUKW, so any young lad could re-enact D-Day; this was before the holiday camp was built. Going to the Wirral, however, was a real treat, but when at New Brighton, we were told not to paddle or bathe on the beach with the River Mersey because of pollution, but round the corner where the beach fronted the Irish Sea was safe. New Brighton then provided a great day out for the family as in addition to the small fairground you mentioned, it also had a large funfair complete with cable chairlift to the top of the New Brighton Tower Ballroom; all now gone. The town suffered a decline in the 1970s with the fairground being closed, the pier being demolished and the ferry from Liverpool being cancelled, but now seems to be prospering with the replacement Floral Pavilion theatre and the area around the Travel Lodge. West Kirby, however, seems not to have changed in fifty years. The marine lake around which you can walk (approximately 40 minutes to do a full circular route) has changed very little, though I recall that there was a small section reserved for young children to paddle in then, but now it seems to be exclusive to sailing club members. Walking round this lake at high tide on a windy day provides an eerie experience with water lapping at your feet from both directions

65 years ago I was 13, our school regularly took us out to Hilbre Island to bird watch, if we were lucky we saw some Grey Seals, and many lovely sea birds, We had warm cloths, a packed lunch and a drink, Great memories. I live in the West Midlands now but would love to see it again before I pop my clogs..

My Grand daughter was born at The Women's, so she is a real little Liver bird.
Some of my fondest memories growing up were going to West Kirby when I was about 10 years old. We would walk out to the island's and bring carrier bags of cockles back. We would wash the cockles in the bath to get all the sand off them then mum would boil them up in pans. When they were cooked mum used to pickle them in vinegar and sell them at our local Royal British Legion on a Saturday night when they had entertainment on in the big room. She'd give us a cut of what she got as pocket money.

I can across a small octopus once in a rockpool. If you ever come back it's definitely worth checking out. Another place to visit is Thursaston Beach which isn't far from West Kirby. It's only a small but secluded beach with Thursaston Common on the cliffs overlooking the beach.

Hilbre Island has North Atlantic Grey Seals around its waters. If you go out at low water and wade into the sea off the old lifeboat slipway (with rock shoes on) before too long you will have some seaside company. Please do note the tide times the gully to the right can whip you out to sea!

I have always wanted to go and see those Gormley statues on that beach - so haunting. Antony Gormley used his own body as a model for the torso of the Angel of the North - probably his most famous work. Hi. Just catching up on some of your videos and really enjoyed this one as we were in this area in October 2022, staying just outside West Kirby. We actually love the Liverpool area and the Wirral and have been a few times in the past. On our recent visit we traveled on Mersey Rail; to Chester, Liverpool and Southport. On the way to Southport we got off the train and walked to Crosby Beach to see the statues. We also drove to New Brighton and walked the promenade we found it to be an interesting place and great location for the view of the ships coming into the Mersey. The fort was open on our visit, we had a coffee in the cafe there.

Literally just found your channel and loving it so far. I’m from New Brighton and absolutely loved this video. It just shows how gorgeous our beaches are, and how well looked after they are. Love West Kirby beach , and Hoylake beach. It’s only a bus ride away from New Brighton to both beaches as they are practically next to each other. I do remember when my kids were small a good few years ago. We jumped the bus with 4 kids baby in a pram and dog. Never thought to look at board about the in coming tide times, ( that are clearly seen ) just didn’t think and We just headed off. It was a nightmare dragging the pram due to the wheels getting stuck in the sand. Well it felt like for ever getting there, and decided to turn round and walk back. From a distance towards the front of the beach I could see ppl waving and looked like they were heading towards us. It was two of the cost guards waving us to come back. He caught up with us , and walked us back. the water was just wetting our feet , but we walked on quick, and I kid you not, I could hear the water from the distance, almost a whooshing sound. Really scared at that point. We could of been in big trouble if we hadn’t turned back one of the guards said , the tide really comes in fast and ppl have been cut off . So never ever tried it again as you can imagine lol . This was a beautiful video and you showed those beaches and all the wonderful things going on around 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Hi Tim, I watched your vid on Blackpool earlier & you were saying how tall the tower is. Well New Brighton once had a tower taller than Blackpool. It opened in 1900 but fell into disrepair during the first World War & was sadly dismantled. The tower ballroom still thrived & in the early 60s held concerts with the beatles before they became very famous. Little Richard headlined one night with the fab four there. Sadly the tower ballroom burnt down in 1969. Its called New Brighton because in the 1830s a developer wanted to create a popular seaside resort on the wirral hence the name 'New' Brighton. It was very successful & thousands of day trippers & holidaymakers visited & continued until the late 60s & 1970s when it fell into disrepair. Its lovely now again thanks to a lot of investment. By the way I live in west kirby & have often walked out to hilbre Island. Its famous for its grey seals & sea birds & waders. Thanks for the great video!

At Crosby you never mentioned the ",blitz" beach, thats as fascinating as the statute portion. I find this area very peaceful despite all the destruction it represents.
Hi Tim great video no I have not walked to those Islands did not know they existed

This has just came up on my you tube…. Didn’t know you did this… crazy golf is great at New Brighton . My daughter lives at Hoylake right by the beach… it’s lovely… such a great video. There is an amazing chip shop at West Kirby

Really interesting video. Especially liked the look of New Brighton, those mermaids were fantastic. I'm planning a trip to Liverpool some time so going to add the beaches to my list of things to visit. Thank you 👍

Heading down to Norfolk in May and going to visit a lot of the places you have shown. Do you have a best recommendation for 1. Fish and chips, and 2. A nice tearoom?
The Anthony Gormley statues were previously on the top of the buildings on the South Bank in London. Amazing sight walking over Waterloo Bridge.

The 100 statues cost £2million thats £20,000 a pop. not bad for some scrap iron. The ones in London are not the ones on crosby beach, He made some more and who can blame him at that price
Tim that art deco building in New Brighton you liked by the funfair is due to be demolished this year? The Seaside Cafe on the corner of the road does good food and it is reasonably priced too, I'm sure it was painted a gaudy shade of pink in the late 70's/early 80's. New Brighton has seen so much investment since I first visited in the late 70's as a toddler. Victoria Road was mainly boarded up and the pier was in the process of being demolished and the beach was really polluted and full of rubbish. Apart from the demolition of the art deco funfair building and the Lido I think it looks a million times better than it did.

So sad a little bit of history
Happy memories of Crosby beach when my children were little. They are all adults now.
Apart from New Brighton and Wallasey arent Liverpool they are on The Wirral
When the tide goes out there some fantastic rock pools on the Mersey with lots of fish and crabs and even little octopus.....you must do a vid on Formby dunes and pinewoods mate....beautiful place
Hi Tim, me again been binge watching your content over the last two nights, seems crazy to say now but I am from Liverpool and I'm quite an old git (41) when we were 16 we used to get the train to West Kirby, walk out to Hilbre Islands (the bigger two) take a load of beer and JD and camp there overnight as the tide came in, brilliant times. Hope you are well.

Been following your video’s for a long time and have loved almost all of them. The only ones I haven’t enjoyed are the ones i am jealous of not having the chance to visit just yet lol. Well done on hitting the 100k subscribers, I am sure you will do 10x that with such great content. A big hello from me in Huddersfield. I have subscribed to help support your channel. All the best of luck, Trevor : )

Lovely
Not sure if this has been commented but on the new Brighton beach part . The building you were asking about is a sewerage works which is also where the pier was also a little further along is a place called tower grounds which used to have a tower bigger than Blackpool
Great vid👍👍Tim
