Liverpool 0-1 Everton, League Cup 1987 (Amazing Sharp miss)

Спорт

The moment where Graeme Sharp misses an open goal comes at 4:56. Liverpool's record at Anfield in Cup matches was formidable - they had lost only one of their last 101 ties there. So, although they were the league champions, Everton knew that many people saw them as underdogs to win this Merseyside derby. Martin Tyler is the commentator.

What a fantastic team that was. Goals from everywhere, even the fullbacks could score goals as good as the strikers....

Everton deserved this win were by far the better team and normally lethal like that goal of the season he scored v Liverpool but sharpe was much under par in this game with 2 missed sitters which would of made the score look more what it should of been,

I'd forgotten about this win, a measure of "revenge" for the defeat at Goodison in January of the same year in the same competition; though it didn't stop our steady decline, from which we haven't really recovered, and certainly didn't set us up for that ever-elusive League Cup win. Still, great memories to see an Everton team, despite being past their mid-80s best, capable of going toe-to-toe at Anfield. Maybe this coming season, after 20 years, we'll finally get a win there again...

To date Everton have never ever lost a cup tie at Anfield in our history. In five visits over there in cup competitions and we've won 2 and drew 3.

Yes, this is something of which the Evertonians should be ashamed. But that was sadly the order of the day back then. In the XXIst century most teams have outgrown these silly habits, with Liverpool being a notable exception. How Liverpool stood by a racist like Suarez is a testimony to this club's dubious ethos. And let us not forget the incident involving Oldham's Adeyemi at Anfield. These incidents did not take place in the previous century but the present one.

I was at Anfield when Liverpool fans were informing John Barnes to get back on his jam jar whilst still playing for Watford. They can never take the moral high ground with Everton. Although they do try.

The gulf has widened way too much between the few mega rich clubs and the rest of the Premiership. (Only Leicester city bucked the trend a few years ago.) It will never be the same, sadly. The game has been ruined in the last 20-25 years by money and far too many imported foreigners who have no roots or identify with the club or the fabric of the city (of that club). I supported Liverpool as a kid growing up in the '80's, but to me now, they could be just another European team; about the only thing that hasn't changed is they still play in red and still play at Anfield. Have a soft spot for that Everton team - deserved they're win here and also wrecked Liverpool's dreams of beating Leeds UTD's record of 29 games undefeated, later that season. The DVD they recently brought out 'Howard's Way' is the best football DVD I've ever seen. Great characters. Great times.
