Live video - 7.8 earthquake, Nov 14 2016 - house shaking in Wellington, New Zealand

This is a live video of my computer room in Wellington during the 7.8 earthquake from Kaikoura. In Wellington this was rated as a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) 7 event. It was quite some earthquake, about 1 minute 20 seconds from first shaking till it stopped.
The first words you hear are me saying "ohhh - big earthquake", I had no idea just how big it would get within the next minute. At first my son and I thought it would be the usual M5 shake, but as the shaking grew worse, it increasingly drew our attention. Diving under the desk is what we've been told is the best thing to do, it certainly protects from anything falling from the ceiling. The 2013 earthquake in Wellington was the only other time I've gone under a desk.
My house is an Edwardian (1909) two storey wooden structure that I had earthquake strengthened about 25 years ago. The room is on the second floor. Apart from a couple of roof tiles shaken out of place by a few centimetres, there was no damage to the house.

Families don’t have to spend every second of every day talking to each other. They are doing their own thing and that’s fine. Don’t start saying stuff like the kids going to become a mass shooter or on drugs or commit suicide. None of us have the right to judge their family from a minuet and a half video.

I had been in Kaikoura between the 12th-13th of November last year for a mate's stag do. We left Kaikoura to head back home to Nelson at 12pm on the 13th, exactly 12 hours before this powerful and incredibly complicated earthquake struck. It felt extremely strong in the Nelson region and I can't imagine what it would've been like closer to the ruptures. Apparently the earthquake ruptured up to a length of 200km starting near Culverden and rupturing along several fault lines all the way as far north as Cape Campbell. The most severe shaking as seen in this video was a result of the Kekerengu and Needles faults rupturing during the earthquake.

+Paul Carter I can describe them if you want. The 8.8 one (in 2010) was extremely violent, but it didn't really last that much. The scary thing is that it hit at 3:34AM. I was 10 years old at the time. However the 8.4 one (in September 2015) will always be in my memory. It hit at 7:54PM and it lasted 6 minutes. It was pretty similar to the 7.8 you had in NZ but longer, like this slow but intense lateral swaying that it's just weird. I was 15 at the time btw. A good video of it is one that was recorded in my city, just look up "Terremoto Vespucio" and the first result will be it. Cheers.

Fellow Wellingtonian here - I was just telling a Canadian friend about this quake yesterday, wasn't expecting to find a video of it, especially not one from a Wellington POV! So thanks, this is useful to show them more what it was like. Gosh I remember being terrified at the time (I was in an apartment building and it SWAYED) as it was the biggest one I could remember feeling. Still kinda scary to see it like this even, to have a wider view of just how intense it was in the region! I remember diving to the floor next to my bed, which I think permanently screwed up my knee haha, oops.

Most homes in NZ are built with timber framing because it flexes better than masonry (which is brittle and tends to crack) during earthquakes. Also, with shelving it is always best to put heavier stuff at the bottom to anchor the unit better in a quake from a centre of gravity perspective. This seems to be what these guys have done.

Hi Paul, great video! I live approx 8km from the epicentre between Rotherham and Culverden, Ours started with a slight shake then about 30 seconds of jolts before going to a rolling motion, amazlingly enough we had no damage due to the fact we are south of the epicentre not north, but some farm houses around us have been red stickered. We are very lucky!

Wow - red stickers are pretty serious. Great you had no damage. I saw a picture of a house that straddled the faulting - it was lifted up 2 metres and shifted sideways 8 metres - that would have been an incredibly scary ride. Wellington moved north about 2cm as a result of the quake.

Ooh, you guys ducked during the secondary wave. The surface waves are the part where it shakes the hardest. I'm in California and my rule for quakes has always been "if it shakes hard right away and does it more than a few times in a row, duck and cover!" Because you never know if you're feeling the surface waves or the secondary waves, and it's always better to be under cover when it feels like Godzilla is playing soccer with your house.

Hi this is my story from Nelson NZ. So basically it was my birthday on 14th November so I am up to midnight already (It happened around 12:03 AM) I checked my phone and I was like " Yay its my birth day.....GOD DAMMIT I'M THIRISTY" so I got up and started to walk across the room to the door way. Because it was late and it was dark I didn't notice the earthquake at first (In the video it was minor before it got big) so when it did hit (like in the video ) I was real surprised. I got thrown to floor (Nelson was a lot closer to the epic center than Wellington so it was stronger) and my mum was woken in the next room. I got up and walked to the hallway. My mum was in my brothers room and the light was banging against his bunk. Afterwards my mum said that she concluded if the bunk fell she would be crushed and Jamie (my brother) would most properly be fine so she took me under the door way (She is a architect so she knows that the door way is actually the strongest part of the house) after a minute it stops for like a second then starts up stronger than before. It was dark and I was real confused. After it was over my mum checked Jamie (He was asleep) than Mum walked up and turned on the TV to check if any one had died or got injured. For practically the whole night facebook was alive and she was on it so I went to bed. Only after I was in bed I was like *HEY......ITS MY BIRTHDAY" XD

I live in Loburn which is 60km from culverden and 30km from Christchurch. When the quake hit, it went on for about a minute or two but wasn't that strong compared to the 6 and 7 magnitude earthquakes in Christchurch. The Christchurch quakes were very sharp and quick, it mainly created damage to buildings and homes. The 7.8 in North Canterbury was long and wavy, it was more destructive to the ground and geological area (converging)

  • @BeckerAviation

    @BeckerAviation

    7 жыл бұрын

Yeah I perfectly know what you mean. The ones in Christchurch were quick and this 7,8 one was oscillating. Here in Chile we had the same comparison between the 8,8 2010 earthquake and the 2015 8,4 one. The 8,8 one was really sharp and quick and did major damage to old buildings, however the 2015 8,4 one (my city Santiago is 250km away from the epicenter) was just like the North Canterbury one. The 2015 one wasn't sharp, but was very wavy and it lasted 6 minutes. Also the lights never went out, but it was evident that it was a 8,4 one.

From various reports I could see that the impact of the Chch quake in Feb 2011 was huge - the ground accelerations it created at Chch were far higher than this 7.8 caused. The Kaikoura quake was all about massive (but relatively slow) movements over a big area.

I wasn't panicked at all and kept a cool head as I arranged a way to get home instead of usually going on the train, but in this 7.8, I was slightly panicked but I was getting my mum and little sister under the kitchen table. Now we just sit on our beds as there's nothing around it that could hit us unless the walls came down then we'd move. But this was super scary for me. I couldn't sleep for a week!

No damage apart from one plant stand fallen over onto my bed, spilling soil over the blankets. I've blu-tacked most vulnerable items already, even the security camera the video is taken from is blu-tacked in place to the computer rack it sits on top of. This also stops the cam from wobbling too much and improves the image.
