A live song performed solely on the Elektron Octatrack MkII.
This set of chords and melodies has been one of my favourite end-of-day meanderings on the piano for the last few months. I've been putting together a live set on the Octatrack and decided to make a full arrangement of it.
The song started in the box, using instruments and percussion mainly from the Arturia and Native Instruments collections. I was immediately surprised at how much I loved the groove and leaned further into that with the musical choices (e.g. the bass). As a final touch, I decided to add the lines I usually sing, and it was fun to have my own vocals as a sample loop. Then I simply brought the sample loops over to the Octatrack and built the structure of the song using synth filter and a few scenes. Very happy with the unusual territory this song fell into in the end.
Performed and recorded live to a stereo output, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
Thanks for listening.

Love the drums on this Jay and the vocals give me those Thom Yorke chills. I say it every time but you continue to outdo yourself. Such a treat.
You're Octatrack stuff is so inspirational. I was frustrated with mine and eventually sold it, but it's been a few years now and I want one again reallll bad. You are partially to blame. :)
That beat is deadly.
This is by far my favorite track on the Octatrack and I remember being blown away by the music when I first heard it! So I "Come back" often to listen to it

Interesting groove on this one with the prominent claps and the vocals were fully unexpected, but felt great, Radiohead vibes with those and the rhythmic feel

Jay Hosking is such a rare gem in the EDM diaspora - with his Unique style and crazy talented on All instruments ! Multiinstrumentalist AND singer,- 😉👍
Sounds beautiful, love the melody, drum work and, of course, the performance on the OT scenes.

Great track! Especially loved the layered vocals and drums.
Thanks for explanations during the set, this is so interesting to understand what’s you are doing!
Jay this is fantastic. I love seeing focused performances with just the Octatrack and samples. Such a versatile piece of kit.
Really enjoyed this. Interesting timing signature changes. Haunting harmonies. Great atmosphere.

Excellent as always, thanks so much. You've really seemed to have mastered those Elektron devices, if that's even possible.
I hear Talk Talk - David Sylvian - Japan - Radiohead vibe , but most of all , i hear pure Jay Hosking ! ❤

Amazing news! And thanks so much.
yes please
I have always been intimidated by the octatrack. If I don’t have keys in front of me I feel lost! Great tune as always.
Impresionante
love the track but most of all love the magic cards
The OT is just so useful. Despite its notoriety as being tough to learn, it's the one device that has just clicked with me. Perhaps I took it more seriously than most other things I've tried, or maybe it just makes sense to me. Either way, it's never leaving me. It would be the last thing I gave up, if things got to that point.
I was just about the pull the trigger on ordering an OXI One (already have a A4M2 and ARM2 - love them) but want to mix it up a bit with patterns, now with 1.70 on AR patterns galore. But also still want to craft full songs, have always stayed away from samples (out of ignorance nothing more than that) but now feel drawn that way. And listening to this seriously need to consider an Octatrack MM2. Oxi looks great for harmonising, complex patterns but which wins, songs over jams - both would be good. Any wisdom would be much appreciated. Your work is inspiring!
Good on you man, i tried this at g.c and the salesman was just as baffled as i lol
Sounds like a GTA theme. Love it.
Great ;) Maybe coincidence but at 0’33 the melodic line reminds me of the main theme from a French song from Johnny Hallyday « Que je t’aime ». I always read that it was hard to master, how many time did it take to you to arrive to this knowledge with Octatrack ?
🔥🔥🔥HOSKINGIANNA🔥🔥🔥🥂
Make us a tutorial on how to build scenes!!!!! 🙏 pleeeease

It seem so easy and fluid , when Hosking mangle's away - like a crazy Kungfu !
That’s a really expensive clip launcher!
Damn! Thats Dope, BTW, Are you using Slice mode for different section of a Long sample or just occupy several static sample slots?
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
Lots of use of slices, yeah, but in the case of some sounds (e.g. vocals), using different samples for different patterns. And thanks!
Wow, this IS beautiful. Did you record the vocals directly into the OT?
@JayHosking
Жыл бұрын
I recorded into the DAW first, added compression, and consolidated the melody and harmonies onto a single .wav file. And thanks so much!
Vocals remind me of Tesseract in a good way
What a great song - but I can't see any benefit to produce COMPLETE TRACKS on such a device like Octatrack - so much more convenient with a cheaper laptop and a DAW like Ableton Live. And yes sometimes reduction makes sense but I like to have the opportunity to go way beyond. What are your thoughts?

The main benefit for me is flow. Much like you could string together acoustic guitar chords into a song in the DAW, it feels better-and you're led to better results-when you play the song from start to finish on the guitar itself. When I work in the DAW, things are too static and it's challenging to feel the flow of performance and progression. Playing the songs and modifying them live really helps me find the song. There's also nothing quite like the Octatrack's scenes (though with Live and Push you could set up macros that are similar). But ultimately, just make the songs you like in the way that you like to make them. That's all that's important. And thanks.
Yeeeeeeeeeh4! Nice Baby or in Germany Fettes Teil :D
That’s not Thom Yorke’s voice?

Phrase timing is very off
