Live hardware jam (a collaboration with a member of Elektron!)

A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by a new collaboration. Erik Ångman is a Technical Writer at Elektron, but more importantly he's a musician with nuanced taste and subtlety. Erik reached out to me about the possibility of making music together, and after hearing his work, I was happy to oblige. Here, I use some audio stems from Erik as a starting point on the Octatrack, "shred to pieces" (Erik's phrase) and then reimagined. Finally, I made some additional melodic and rhythmic content via the Octatrack, Digitone, and Monomachine. I'm very happy with the results, and here's hoping it's the beginning of a beautiful collaboration!
Elektron Octatrack MkII - Sample mangler, performance mixer, scene maker
Elektron Digitone + Cooper FX & Chase Bliss Generation Loss (into Octatrack) - Warbly melody
Elektron Digitone (into Monomachine) - Swell pad
Elektron Monomachine MkII (into Octatrack) - Drums, bass, high synth, harmony synth, and performance mixer
Written by Erik Ångman and Jay Hosking. Performed and recorded live by Jay, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

this is quite nice, I really enjoy the complexity of the drums, without becoming too overbearing
Man I love your videos! Thanks to you I got a Monomachine for Valentine’s Day today because my lady thought your work with it was so awesome that she felt my desire for one was justified. Thanks Jay! 🤘🏼😎
Just mindblowing perf I dream of being able to drive these beasts like that !!!

I came here to say the same thing!
That melody is hauntingly beautiful. IMO It would have been so fitting having it played on a flute as an outro

That's a cool idea! Maybe one day I'll do a collaboration with someone on flute.
J.H. + Elektron = ecstasy & well-being... :))
Jay, You outdid yourself with this one. You are one of the few artists whose music makes me feel goosebumps, and this one in particular had me bobbing my head and feeling actual chills down my spine. I truly hope someday the world gives you your proper recognition next to other electronic music geniuses like deadmaus and daft punk. You have an amazing gift and I thank you deeply for sharing it with us. Bravo!

Supercool! Greetings from Tijuana
I just love your music. I grew up on rock, blues, metal and folk music. Electronic music was considered the enemy by my mates. As a kid I never found access to it, probably due to hearing only the commercial stuff on the radio or MTV. But this? Just great, interesting, well-arranged, varied. Thanks a lot for sharing this. I got a Microbrute last year mainly because I found your videos inspiring and I am about to buy a ... what are they classified as? Groove Box? next. Do you think the Circuit tracks would make sense for someone new to this world? I have been making music constantly for 27 years but it was all non-electronic. I handle DAWs and hardware devices daily, though.

Hey, thanks so much for the kind words. Yeah, "groovebox" is a terrible word, but a great category of devices. I think the Circuit Tracks is the perfect introduction to making music with a bunch of boxes: it's not perfect, but it's plenty hands on, has a relatively intuitive sequencer, and gives you space to grow (e.g. you can run your Microbrute into it and sequence it). Best of luck!
As an authority on such things, I deem this both radically awesome and squidgy
Squidgy is a good word. Squidgy.
When LP out ? Top quality material !

Someone's been listening to Aphex Twin... ;)
Hi there ! Amazing jam, ive been eyeing elektron gear for two years and can only afford one piece of gear rn , what would you recommend jay? I feel an allure to the octotrakt!

The Octatrack is great, but I feel it shines most when you're running other things through it. Hard to say what your "one" should be. The Octatrack and Digitakt are both fun sample players. The Rytm is very good as a groovebox, too. But in terms of sound, my favourite is the Analog Four; it's just beautiful sounding. Can't go wrong with any of their metal boxes, really! Best of luck.

@@JayHosking thank you!, i have no other boxes and i saw your bit in. Bo beats best gear 2020 video and it seemed to clear the air a bit, but its so hard to make a decision
I own 3 Elektron machines and found the learning curve to be steep for me...unfortunately. This is a wonderful display of analog sorcery.

I only own 1 and struggling to work it out. But, just tonight I started to feel like I’ve learnt a tiny little bit and that was enough to have me bobbing my head and smiling 🙂
Alright, spill them beanz. You know something about the next elektron machine. Don't you?

Hey Jay! Do you have a video somewhere maybe on patreon how you create such drums? It’s like 65daysofstatic. I really want to know how to do such things. Greetings from Ukraine 🇺🇦
