Analogue & digital jam with Moog Matriarch and Elektron Digitakt

A live, semi-improvised performance, all on hardware, and inspired by long summer sunsets.
The Matriarch and Digitakt couldn't be much more different - a sprawling analogue synth and a compact digital sampler - but I found that their strengths were really complementary. Here, the Digitakt sequences the Matriarch, and is also taking advantage of the Reel Feels sample pack by @Jogging House, which you should definitely check out. Get it here: jogginghouse.bandcamp.com/alb...
Altogether, this came out more lovely and lo-fi than I could have hoped.
Moog Matriarch + Empress Effects Reverb - Four synth voices
Elektron Digitakt - Five sample tracks (four melodic samples, plus a multi-sampled drum track)
Written and recorded in a 48-hour period and uploaded as is, with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.

    Awesome stuff, this one was really cerebral but also kind of hypnotic. Like it was the soundtrack to your dialogue rather than the other way around. They're an oddity your videos, a new way for me to enjoy music in a different way, and for me personally a deeper way. I would absolutely listen to this if it were released on spotify but it would feel like something is missing, not inherently in the piece but maybe just my own association. I suppose because you yourself are on a journey when creating these compositions, that the words you're writing on screen are not merely a description of what is happening, but actual milestones along the journey that you took while creating the music. So the words themselves are as much an element of the music as the drums or the machines on your desk. There's some bigger implication here that escapes me but thank you for this. An excellent piece of music

  • @JayHosking

    @JayHosking

    3 жыл бұрын

    I’m just sending out to the same MIDI channel across the four tracks. I’m away from the Matriarch at the moment, but I believe there are multiple switches on the far right that need to be set so only a single oscillator is triggered at a time. Best of luck, and thanks.

  • @JayHosking

    @JayHosking

    3 жыл бұрын

    I definitely prefer having the analogue voices on board with the Rytm, and the macros make it great for performance. Only drawbacks are not having the control-all function, and the pads being terrible in terms of playability and quality (they often trig each other, and they feel awful). Digitakt's a nice size, too. But for sound, I'd say Rytm for sure.

  • @jessejarrar

    @jessejarrar

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@JayHosking yeah, for whatever reason, the pads seems like the biggest downside to me. I want to midi sequence with the elektron sequencer, but seems like the digitone is the only option with 8 voices of polyphony. Always struggled trying to source samples that I don't feel are cheesy and I feel like an analog drum machine would remedy that. Mostly just to accompany guitar practice / sketching songs anyways

So I thought I'd pick it up, give it a spin, and then resell it for the same price if it was redundant. I really like the Digitakt's control-all (possible on AR but a little more setup) and fast revert-pattern, and also the Digitakt's size. Also nice to have the sequencer in a pinch. I think there’s a little too much overlap with the Rytm to easily justify having both, and I’m often missing some of the features of the Octatrack, but the control-all and quick revert-pattern make it fun and fast. Not an essential addition if you have Rytm or Octatrack, but would be a great first performance sampler.

    I would just keep the Digitakt and the Octatrack, sell the Rytm, buy the Digitone.. and still have some money left.

    Parameter locking. A particular step can have its parameters locked to certain values, while going back to the default values otherwise. It's part of the Elektron workflow, but also shows up on other devices.
