Live Life with Creativity & Curiosity | Dhruv Sehgal | Varun Duggi | Take aPause

There’s never been a time in human history when we as a species have been as “connected” as we are now. Social media pervades almost every aspect of our lives. And yet, writer Dhruv Sehgal confesses that the need to actively engage with the world is something that he feels less and less everyday. Because there is an abundance of mostly irrelevant information being thrown our way every minute, that we have very little desire or energy left to build connections that really matter.
In this episode of Take aPause, Varun Duggi sits down for a heartfelt chat with actor and writer Dhruv Sehgal on the rigours of the writing process, developing discipline, harnessing “boredom” to find inspiration, and building real connections in a world saturated with content.
Writer, actor, and director Dhruv Sehgal is best known for his work on the mini series Little Things - as actor, creator, and head writer. He also won the Golden Gateway Dimensions Mumbai Award at the Mumbai Film Festival for his short film Kunal in 2016. He has written, acted and directed comedy sketches for Filter Copy.
Dhruv Sehgal is an Indian actor, writer, and director. He is the actor and mind behind the fabulous show ‘Little Things’. He recently worked on the Indian adaptation of ‘Modern Love’, an anthology series.

My takeaways from this episode - 1) Quote by Amit Chaudhuri - "The writer becomes a writer not when he thinks of the story but when he becomes aware of his self & his place in the world". 2) The desire to be stimulated is less & desire to slow down is far more. 3) Curiosity is sparked when it's not what you always see. 4) There is no difference between an experienced writer and a writer who's never written because you always start from zero. 5) Trying to analyze everything in life is tiring. 6) Being forced to interact is one of the worst things that has happened to humankind. 7) If you are always aware of yourself, you are not really experiencing anything. 8) Boredom drives imagination. 9) You need to have discipline & structure to be inspired & bored. This was such a stimulating conversation. It is uncommon now to see a podcast episode where the host and the guest have a stimulating conversation with each other, forgetting that it's made for people to watch.

What are the 3 types of memory? The three major classifications of memory that the scientific community deals with today are as follows: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Information from the world around us begins to be stored by sensory memory, making it possible for this information to be accessible in the future.

Cheers to you both. I could relate to the early morning idli scenes you described. I would wait for those fresh batches of idlis aftery night shift job in Bangalore like 7 years back! 😁

I couldn't have relate with a podcast the way I did with this one. It felt like someone just answered many unspoken questions in my mind and my daily struggle with writing or perhaps living. The perspective shared was so fresh and real yet felt familiar. Thank you Varun and Dhruv for sharing this amazing podcast, for having conversation that matters to many of us, we might or might not be writers, however are for sure, people looking to live a little. I might just revisit this again and will keep a notebook closer this time to just pen down the knowledge nuggets shared in here.
