Live From IronShore - Ep 1: Jay Weinberg | A Modern Drummer HOF Tribute to Alex Van Halen

Ойын-сауық

Alex Van Halen's drumming has profoundly shaped the landscape of modern music and performance. His distinctive style, rhythmic innovation and iconic drum sound are deeply embedded in the DNA of the music we enjoy today. Moreover, his elaborate and customized drum sets have undoubtedly influenced a generation of young drummers, encouraging them to expand their kits with additional drums or cymbals, or to create their own unique, custom drum setups.
In honor of Alex Van Halen's prestigious 2023 induction into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame, we are thrilled to present an exclusive video series that pays tribute to Alex's remarkable career and enduring legacy. The Series was filmed at the incredible IronShore Studios in Grand Cayman and features interviews and performances by 3 of todays most recognized drummers, playing on Alex's actual 2012 custom touring drum set, built by the great John Douglas.
The first episode features drummer Jay Weinberg. Jay speaks to Modern drummer publisher/CEO David Frangioni about his encounters with Alex Van Halen and how he influenced his drumming and career. Following the interview, Jay performs his own version of Van Halen's "Running With the Devil" on Alex's drum kit. Though purposely not the same as Alex's drum parts, Jay pays homage to Alex's uniqueness by bringing his own originality to the performance.

About damn time for Alex, congrats brother! Hot for Teacher intro was a boot to the ass in getting me drumming. So iconic. I started playing as a teen in the 90s playing grunge and punk at 1st, but my love for the craft really took off once I started following Igor Cavalera and Vinny Paul Abbott. Metal drumming is symphonic to me, a level of pure art. Thank you so much for the music!🤘🤘

I've also been a big VH fan all my life. My favorite tune is I'm the One, this song was on Toy Machines Welcome to Hell video. Always got me pumped up to go skate...

This video makes me extremely PROUD! I have been a GINORMOUS fan of Alex Van Halen since 1979 when I first received Van Halen II record for my 13th birthday! I use to practice to the first six VH albums EVERYDAY after school until the year I graduated high school (1984... coincidentally!). I didn't just learn his parts I learned his technique, feel, and nuances. There is SO MUCH MORE to Alex's playing then some think! He is a PHENOMENAL drummer, congratulations Al you DESERVE IT!

It’s also about the consequences of having that many mics up. If you don’t have world class engineers, a world class sound system with world class performance and flexibility, you’re going to get feedback and parasitic frequency issues all over the place. I’ve had some *super* nice, talented engineers in the past who can’t get five drum mics to cooperate in close proximity to guitar amps, bass amps, floor wedges, etc. That’s just the reality that pops up when you couple the physics of sound reinforcement equipment with humans who are, by nature, fallible and imperfect.

I was there! I may have filmed it. On my iPhone. I'll have to look. I got to sit behind these drums and I pecked on them when no one was looking. Got a pic. I also went to pay torpey (mr big) and filmed that whole thing. He died a month or so after that tribute. - - I'm an AVH nut and EVH. Played Al's drums in Cabo wabo in 1995. Kinda been to 5150....or the driveway entrance. Malibu home on beach in front. Stuff like that. Met Eddie and Al at a sound check. A couple of times. Got a Wolfgang. Ludwig double bass super classic 9 piece similar to ou812. I play in rock bands. Born in 1975.

But Alex’s talents and contribution to the band…Their success and their inimitable sound cannot be emphasized enough. Pocket, groove, swing, and tastefully displayed chops are Al’s calling card. Oh, and monster drum kits! 😉🤟🏼

It would have been nice, if the musical part at the end had been mixed better. Talk about mid-range overload. All that was heard was the vocals, guitar and snare drum. It would have been nice to hear the cymbals. Being this was a video for and about drumming. A person would expect the sound quality of the drums to be on point. If i didn't know this was video on the drums. I would have assumed it was a video on Eddie and his heroics. Maybe next time. It was still a cool-ass video!!!!!!!!
