I'd LOVE to see someone skilled in dyeing floss, too! I've wanted to try dyeing my own fabric and floss, but I've always been too scared. Priscilla and Chelsea know everything about cross-stitching! They are amazing!

The salt helps to set the dye. When I was a teenager you would wash your new blue jeans in the machine with salt water to set the blue denim. I'm excited to dye some fabric for my cross stitch. Thank you Priscilla, Chelsea and Kimberly for this great tutorial ❤

With Procion dye, the darker the color, the more salt you use to get deeper color. So salt quantity does matter. What you are doing is fine for your purposes. The puddling of dye on the bottom of the pan makes the blotches. when you turn it the puddles move and you loose the blotches. Your color will be smooth.

I have never had a problem with overdyed floss or fabric washing it after I’m done with stitching. I put vinegar in the water and no dye comes from floss or fabric when washing it. I never frame or finish my stitching with out washing it first . I don’t want oil stains from handling it why stitching it to remain on it once it is finished. I don’t want it to end up becoming deteriorated after all that work.
