Awesome vid! Great way to get some ideas for a live setup. I got into synths and making electronic music only about a year ago, and coming from a Rock / Hardcore Punk background getting a setup like this working for a live set still feels alien to me. It’s an inspiring journey though. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! 🙌🏽

I like what you have going here (especially as an Octatrack owner). It's not complicated, but incredibly versatile at the same time for doing things on the fly. Also, love chill type stuff with a 303 in it, first song I ever completed was in the same vein

My indoor set up is: Digitakt Novation Mono Circuit Station Behringer Model D Deepmind 12d Roli Seaboard Block My outdoor set up for when we play shows in the forest is: Critter and Guitari Organelle C&G Pocket Piano Korg ES-1 Volca Sample Sometimes I love playing with equipment that is extremely limiting so that I can push the instruments to their limits and see what happens. A lot of people wondering why the DAW shade..? For me it has to do with computer meltdowns. Too many times I have been performing with my computer and run into some computer related tech glitch that completely took me out of the vibe, or out of the mix entirely. Hardware has been far more reliable. Plus there is a tactile satisfaction to it. Same reason people don't typically just use their computer keyboards but instead opt for midi controllers. It quite literally FEELS good to create on a dedicated sampler or other piece of hardware by comparison with creating exclusively in a DAW. A lot of people also appreciate the limitations hardware presents, forcing you to be creative within the bounds of the gear. This can be a lot of fun, especially when you get to know the gear and start hearing what everyone else is doing with it! Sometimes if I'm producing just within Ableton it can feel a bit too open ended and rather stale to try and start a new jam.

Great video! I am just getting into the OT and it is pretty confusing. This was super helpful. Can you do a follow up or what not where you talk about routing in the OT? What machines do you use on each of the 8 tracks, and the one thing I was really hoping more info on was track 8 and your crossfader setup. How do you use it as a master? Is everything routed to that?

love the video , I use 2 novation circuits with a Iconnectivity midi4+ to access the circuits hidden parameters using a simple novation lauch control XL. the midi 4+ has USB hub allowing 9 devices ! yes 9 midi controllers at once and IOS device also . its a monster midi processor. it also does midi filtering to correct the hardwired midi channel 1-2 of the circuit issue until its resolved :(

@Avalon Bassline Problem. Sometimes machines had problems with "fake"-NOTE-OFF messages. Many controllers send NOTE-ON message with velocity = 0 instead of a real NOTE-OFF message. (for example-AKAI MPC 1000) This causes problems to some units. To map/transform MIDI correctly, i use a "midi solutions - eventprocessor (plus)" Maybe it's worth a try.

Ya the Circuits' scales does come in handy with midi. I recently picked up a FH-1 for my modular and tried it out with my Octatrack. It was alright. I then dug up my Circuit and MAN I am surprised how easier and better it is to make actual music from my modular. I think the Octa and Digi are not true Chromatic but actually pitch.

Jason Thorpe nice! That’s another setup I love using. In this setup I have Clock from Digitakt going to Circuit’s midi input (No notes just clock). Then I have Circuit’s midi Output going to the Avalon Bassline. Just so I can use Circuits ‘scale mode’ to enter in the bass notes on the Avalons sequencer.

Hey Ricky, do you know of any other dawless musicians out here besides yourself? It's ashame that you and dawless jammer are the only one's that I can find on youtube that do not use a computer. It really blows my mind because everybody uses a computer, and I here a ton of people complaining about not wanting or liking to use a laptop or computer. I'm one of those people, but I know that I can make some really nice stuff without one, and just thinking about using one makes me feel some kind of way. Anyway, if you do know anyone else that goes dawless, to maybe help guide me a little bit on how to get set up completely and know the ins and outs, I'd appreciate it. Thanks brother. Ricky how does the lack of overbridge support not drive you stark raving mad? I love the octatrack but not being able to multitrack in almost 2022 is insane and theres no excuse so I sold t. In order to have a complete dawless with some more channel without buying lots more stuff the octatrack wasnta great pic. If i didnt like the 'quirk's of the octrack, what would you recomend forthe brain of my setup? Deluge or MPC LIve Two or something else? I hate memorizing combos of buttons and i LIke things laid out intuituitively. Sorry I know this is a a tall order but you're one of the few good unbiased hardware youtbue channels and I appreciate ya homie. Keep up all the good work. I have a nice modest and mature 7k modular rag, a 303 clone and the new drum machine from erica synths. That should do it with thesampler/sequencer/etc right? My moular has an instruo cs l,an antlantis, lots oof juuicy filtersa modulation etc, im good to go in that regard.

@ricky Tinez. Nice vid. Coupla things: If you already have a sampler, or can't afford the 1200 pricetag for the octatrack, some of the smaller behringer mixers have mutes that send to a subgroup that can be routed back in to a stereo channel - e.g. the Xenix 1204 USB. They also have a pretty small footprint and cost 1000 less than the octatrack. Also, why record the midi on the Avalon.... couldn't you just record it on the circuit? Just askin.... love your stuff. ;)

Hey man I hope you're doing well! I've been following your channel for quite some time. I've always wondered how to get a really good sound from playing live by live looping. It seems like when I plug my computer into the PA speakers at a gig I lose some quality of my live drumming and some of my pre-recorded tracks on Ableton or my looping devices. Do you think I should get my own sound system when I play live?

Everything is great! But there is only 2 things I don't understand. Do I need to power each separately? And I know you are using a recorder right now to capture the sound, but what if I'm out in the woods or beach? Do I need to carry my speakers with me + a generator?

Hey Ricky, how would you connect a keystep into this set up so you can play keys on auto channels for any selected track and instrument?

Bro so good... Just bought a novation circuit, i'll purchase the behringer rd-8 soon. I already have a push 1. Do you think I could complete my setup with a roland sp 808 ? Or it would be meaningless ? Thanks a lot !

Sweet setup! Just a technic remark. Sync over MIDI is nothing less than MIDI data.
