Little pieces of confidence | My Relocation Diaries

Moving to a new country can be scary, and you need to build a new sense of confidence in this new place. I realized that the only way for me to overcome my fear of ‘not belonging’ or ‘doing something wrong’ is by building my confidence little by little by taking small actions. And that’s what I’m talking about today.

We moved to USA, two kids 10 and 8YO. Spanish speakers. I can remember my daughter crying saying the only thing she could do was watch the clock on the wall, waiting to leave the school because she didn’t understand any word in the class. 😢 difficult times, but after a while everything became better ❤.

This brings me back so many memories, Hadar. ..let me share with you what pushed me to work so hard in learning japanese as soon as I could: a haircut 😅. I found myself unable to explain how I wanted it. My japanese was very basic, so I thought saying short here, keep this long there was enough...nope. I bless that woman, she pushed me to freedom. All I had to do was look in the mirror and say to myself: never again. Every person was a lesson for me. It just kept getting better as I improved. My time in Japan was filled with joy and wonderful people I won't forget. It made me stronger in so many ways. I wish you a wonderful weekend in this beautiful country, I love Spain, so much culture, so much history and Barcelona is amazing.

Hello Hadar, I could listen to you for hours... It evokes feelings of happiness, and I'm sure thousands of people feel the same way. With this support and love from around the world, you will succeed wherever you settle. I look forward to the next episode. I'm quite jealous that you're supposed, or rather, have no choice but to learn Spanish and Catalan. Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to share your Spanish learning journey with everyone... :) I would love to learn Spanish from scratch and be guided by your expertise. Thank you for your online presence! It's truly fantastic.

I've been following you for a long time, but since you moved to Spain I like your videos more. You don't talk about rhythm, pronunciation... but about your experiences here. It's not that I understand you completely, but I understand most of it, and that's how I improve my hearing. I hope you are happy in Spain, and if you go south, in Extremadura you have a house. A hug, Hadar.

It’s incredible how hard and challenging it is to go and ask for a coffee (my native language is Spanish). Everything about going to a coffee shop feels like a struggle and a stressful moment. But now, I'm trying to change my mindset and see it as a victory and an opportunity for improvement when I ask for coffee. If I make a mistake, it’s okay; I’ll do better next time. Thank you, Hadar! I’m not an immigrant, but I relate with everything you've shared with us.

Hi Hadar, you're doing terrific! Despite the language barrier, everyone adapts differently. It took me nearly five years to fit in, and it's still a work in progress. My daughter also took almost three years and changing schools to make friends and feel comfortable. Seeing her unhappy was tough, but it's part of life. Now we love where we live; it's safe and peaceful. It took time to stop longing for the USA, but I'm grateful for the positive changes. 😊

I can relate. How are you managing the frustration of not being understood by the nationals? I also feel constantly inferior to them because I’m completely outside my comfort zone and obviously I’m not feeling confident. They have everything: a family around, a supportive environment, a car, a house, a routine, etc., and me, still starting from the scratch. It seems they have the permission to have opinions (disgust things, make jokes, use sarcasm, enjoy things), and me, still figuring things out.

Hadar, I hope by this time you are more settled in Barcelona with your relatives. What a challenge decided to face with a huge change moving to Barcelona above all without manage the language. Anyway, I just want to share my thoughts about something that resonates to me in this journey. Even though you are experienced language teacher you faced insecurity and uncertainty in a daily and regular activities like if you got well and/or if I understood. That's still happen to me when I have to speak English. But all time you are encourages your students and followers (myself) to speak no matter what. In a few months you will be fluent in Spanish and this phase of your life will a learning story that's shows us everything is possible when you wanted it. Mucho éxito en esta nueva aventura saludos desde México.

So funny that I went through exactly the same challenge when I moved to Canada, I'm from Mexico so I speak Spanish, so, I didn't speak English at all, nothing, so, it was so hard for me to get used to speaking English all the time. Eventually, after taking English as a second language at school, I began to feel confident. But at first, it was so hard, difficult and stressful, frustrating, etc etc etc etc. At the end, you feel satisfied when people begin to understand you. So, go on ahead my friend, you can do it!!🎉❤

Thanks, Hadar...I can relate to what you are experiencing. I have been living in the US for about 20 years. I have to work/ interact with a lot of people from phone calls and so on. And I start a new job in which I need to be making a lot of phone calls, and some people telling me that they can't understand me. It has been frustrating, with my age and time living here and trying my best, and today you are talking about confidence. Thanks!

Hi Hadar, You're such an intelligent lady. This is an incredible journey for you and also your viewers like me. While I'm listening to your new chapter in Barcelona, I feel like I'm right there going through how I would feel if I'm in your shoes. I can see you eventually be able to build up such a confidence and happiness as days go by. When I feel anxious or negative emotion coming out of me, I try not to dig in. It's important to take care of our emotion but our emotion can be deceptive. Sense of humors, flexibility, resilience, kind to yourself and others, let all the good energy into your spirit. Moving into a new country with different language must be like when you started to learn English language. Look at you you! How you became who you are now. Make this new journey full of excitement and joy!

Really interesting Hadar. That is why everyone should experiment this situation. That's really important to understand how to host people in your area. I was bad in school in english. I moved in Uk 3 years and half worked in hospitality and catering. That pushed me to go in front of customer and manage different kind of situation. I remember once in UK I was in charge of the breakfast in Whatley Manor Malmesbury. An american ask me an over easy egg. I asked him three time because I did not know what it was. Then I moved back in the kitchen and said it to the chef. The chef told me listen it is a egg cooked on both side during 2 min. Never seen that in France where I am from. I know today what it is. That the way it works.

Hello Hadar, your podcast today was so emotional , it resonated so much on me feeling , the same fears emotions ,struggles ,I have had when I moved at least three times from North Algeria first to France, I was a teenager with a bad thick French. I nonetheless managed to become a surgeon urologist then I moved the second time to Quebec Montreal to get degree in urology, new country new rules new habits, new life for almost 2 years, and then back to France south of the France Toulouse, I worked there 15 years comfortable life , convenient easy life .. I felt stuck with no creativity then I made the biggest decision of my life to move to Paris. I left friend , family with so much pain regrets. But this third move was maybe the best thing I ever did. I went out of my comfort zone and realized the best part of my career. I feel deep in my heart all the obstacles you are going through. I’m sure you will succeed with your energy, and. I wish you the best for you and your family in Spain. Barcelona is very close .. 2 hours drive Just saying .. if you go to Toulouse, you have a big apartment with three bedrooms downtown the ancient neighborhood…. Alain Ioualalen

When you describe how you felt about your experience in a new environment like Barcelona with a new language, I remember that I still feel stress and fear about speaking in English. But listening to you is always learning about a language and these experiences will certainly make you even better at teaching languages.

I know what it is like to not been capable of advocating for oneself 🤔 (it sucks). In your case it won't be for too long though. You have the tools to catch up fast. You have the ear, your mouth muscles know how to create new sounds and your mind is trained. Also Spanish is an "exact" language. Once you learn how the 28 alphabet characters sound you are all set. I know talking is cheap but enjoy the ride into the unknown. It will be like earning one more strip for the tiger. LOVE
