The fact that this movie was made in 2018 and the fact that it is rated R feels like I glitched into a different timeline of the universe

It was rated r? I feel like when i watched it,its was rated pg13. Unless there was nudity i don't understand why it was rated R.
Petition for you to do an episode on My Big Fat Greek Wedding. As a Greek I simply need this episode
as an Italian Canadian living in Toronto I am so excited for this episode!!!!!! and fun fact: Toronto has 2 Italian neighbourhoods Little Italy, along College St, and Corsa Italia along St Clair West. my dad is an Italian immigrant
Usually, I’m aware of a lot of films but I can’t believe this one flew by me. I would like to thank Drew Gooden and his partner, Amanda who provided excellent discourse.

"Being an Italian is about three things: tradition, passion, and pride......and LAMPS!" Me, an Italian: He's not wrong.
Is Garrick okay 😂 saw him just staring into space with wide eyes so many times . How traumatizing was this movie for him? 😭
24:36 Thank you to the panel for calling out the racism. Curry Powder is not terrible and someone who knows their spices would appreciate it. P.S. Totally not surprised a South Asian with Internalised Racism produced the movie. We’re our own worst enemies.

Oh god, I’m flying air Canada in a couple months. Never been on a plane before, wish me luck!
Me starting to notice Garrick's antagonism towards Canada 🤣🤣
‘Kelsey hasn’t seen Month’ sounds absolutely fabulous! Also, the first pick is ‘Clueless’?! I watched that movie later in life but I loved it and related to it so much. Also because we had an Hindi version of it (‘Aisha’ is also adapted from ‘Emma’ too) which I saw before. It’s still aesthetically relevant and very Zoomer in my opinion.
Idk if this is mentioned but the fact that they’re supposed to be the same age (when Hayden is like a decade older than Emma) is funny to me
I watched this movie so long ago and I forgot the “like you were open for me” line. My jaw DROPPED when Kelsey said it
The screenplay writer Steve Galluccio is the Italian Canadian man who wrote this, I wish they had googled this lmfaooo 😂
the confusion about why a movie would dare to be set in canada is so funny. i mean there are people living here lmao. hayden christensen is canadian lives or at least used to live north of toronto, maybe thats part of why it was actually set in toronto rather than toronto posing as new york like usual.

I found out about this movie from Drew Gooden’s channel. He watches it with his wife and it’s adorable
"a lifetime of anger and cheese" best quote ever
"How did they get that much weed into Canada?" Guys, weed is federally legal here (thank God!) - anywhere in Canada, if you are 19+, you can go to a weed store (or some grocery stores!) and pick up whatever your heart desires. I love you you guys but it always blows my MIND how little Americans know about Canada, as we generally grow up with pretty good background knowledge about the states... anytime I go to America on vacation I get asked the dumbest shit lol
"when you're here, you're little family" is fucking killing me 🤣
I can assure you we have weed in Canada haha. There are dispensaries on like every block I swear to god (also it became legal here in 2018 so this movie was uhhh behind which is just extra funny). Edit: Also the guy who played Luigi was my highschool improv teacher. Man's a legend.
Honestly, when I first heard of this movie, my first thought was the 2005 film “Pizza My Heart” which is basically Romeo & Juliet (without the dying part) but in the context of rival pizza parlors/neighbors in Verona, New Jersey

Right??? It’s the SAME movie!!!!!!
Kelsey’s eyeliner looks incredible. My god. 👀
Ok listen, a LOT of stuff is filmed in Canada that is supposed to be NYC or literally any other fucking place in the USA. Like so much shit gets filmed in Canada instead because it's cheaper, especially TV shows and Hallmark type movies. Speaking as someone who lives in the greater Toronto area. So they could have kept this as is and edited out anything mentioning Canada and pretended it was NYC. Guaranteed that has been done thousands of times. But the fact it HAD to be canonically in Canada because it was sponsored by Air Canada, the worst fucking airline... PEAK. I'm gonna watch this now lmao. ...Also are you guys actually unaware of the fact weed is legal in Canada?
The sexual chemistry on screen and off screen discussion is so real because if you ever watched gattaca ethan hawke had more sexual tension with jude law than he did with his actual wife uma thurman
In regards to the New York vs Toronto thing, I think there are Little Italies in many major cities, the same way there are multiple Chinatowns lol. You just have immigrants building communities.

Should have been Space Balls 😉
They filmed this movie at my grandparents house for the old age home and the park scenes were filmed in Christie Pits park both in Toronto!
I watched this movie in a hotel in Berlin summer of 2019 while extremely hungover and throwing up every twenty minutes. It was great!
This podcast is pure joy! Thank you ❤
FYI “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” is based off of Nia Vardalos actual family life in Winnipeg,Manitoba (AKA Canada) and was filmed in both Chicago AND …. Toronto (aka Canada).
"They call it Little Italy because nothing GROWS here!" FIXED THEY SHOULD HAVE WROTE GROWTH AND THEY COULD NOT
I'm dying 🤣 Their reactions and explanations of everything kills me. I don't even know if I wanna watch this movie and I'm FROM Toronto...but I have to 😂
I’ve never seen this movie but I grew up on the movie Pizza My Heart which is a ABC Family movie, and it’s pretty much the same premise. Instead of Canada the movie takes place in New Jersey so definitely would recommend checking this movie out if you liked Little Italy.

tbh if I was in a pizza shop in Toronto and could smell weed I wouldn’t think anything of it. A lot of places smell like weed especially in the city because it’s legal federally so people don’t have to hide it anymore lol
YASSSSS I was listening to this on Spotify this morning and was waiting for the vid
Y'all should do Blazing Saddles! It's a classic, full of stereotypes, super insulting, and hilarious. No one is safe. It's my guilty pleasure for sure.
I love Guilty Pleasures so much!
Really wanting y’all to do What a Girl Wants hehe
40:48 I think they were probably playing off the fact that Rome is known as the Eternal City because it never changes. Maybe they broadly applied that to all of Italy. What’s one more stereotype to this movie? 😅
Just wanted to know I tried to watch the video about you getting impaled, but I literally fainted in my office chair. I woke up slumped over and had pulled all the cables out of the docking station and knocked over my water
Tell me, you’re Italian without telling me your Italian: Mambo Italiano is my ringtone.
Ironically, “Little Italy”, not on Canadian Netflix 🤭
Truly a great episode and an underrated movie
29:25 This man’s story was carried on by the Daniels in EEAAO. Also, yes to Luigi Spin-Off please.
i thought i was the only person who knew about this film lol!!!
Oddly enough... because of the gay film "Mambo Italiano" which is set in little italy in Canada I always think of that rather than little Italy anywhere else. (For context Im in NZ)
Lmao honestly love this movie 😂😂 def a guilty pleasure
Also, just a note to Casting Directors: If a South Asian person (or any person for that matter) speaks naturally with an American accent, please don’t turn that into the ‘fresh off the boat’ character. It’s insulting in any time in history.
We have a little Italy in Montreal, Canada too!
11:41 I’m with Kelsey on this: No Emma Roberts Slander please. She’s played on the best versions of Nancy Drew out there. Also, are we going to forget ‘Scream Queens’ and the memes she’s produced?

Could this movie have been shelved for years?
@korndiddy I see this movie in a very different light. This is pure satire! It isn't as blatant as anything by Mel Brooks or starring Leslie Nielson, but it absolutely is! Great care was used to showcase the clichés that are rampant in film. • The overused and constantly "updated" Romeo and Juliet theme. • The continuous Hallmark depiction of Girl Returning Home and Finding Love. • The very real idea that Toronto strives to be NYC. • The idea that anyone with a medium skin tone can be cast as Italian, Greek, Latino, Arabic, Native American, Indian...taken to the point of casting a Southeast Asian as an Italian because, hey! the skin color is right... • The use of stereotypical names...Luigi wasn't lazy, it was planned. • The overused airport chase, which included another bow to movie racism when he mistakes an East Asian woman is his target. • The sexual abuse ignored by the crowd...but went in deep by having a male be the abused. I know there's more, but I hope you get my point. Watch it again...
Total deja vu….I swear they already did this movie before 🧐 … … WHATEVER! Still love it 😄

I'd like to state for the record that Italians have not always been considered "White." I do not know enough about Canadian history, but in America Italians struggled for rights for many years. And of course add to that the colorism of Northern vs. Southern Italians. I know this movie is entirely absurd, but y'all seem rather blasé about it.
@ambriaashley3383
Жыл бұрын
Then the US started getting more Asian immigrants, and when Black people were pushing for more civil rights, Italians were then gathered into the “white” category simply so their numbers could equal that of the “new, scary” minorities. So socially they were always technically white, but they weren’t considered legally white in America until what, the 1930s? And they’ll never be seen as less than white again, which is good for them
everything i know about this movie is entirely thanks to Drew Gooden
It’s free on KZread lol
ooooh the movie in top 5 beatdown
first of all, i can't believe i have yet to watch this movie it sounds terrible (in the best way) second of all, i was also listening to the coffee run episode on the trypod where you mentioned going for another themed month, this might be an unexpected choice but i would go with a Ryan Guzman month and here's why: you got two Step Up movies (that are an iconic franchise) to choose from, The Boy Next door which stars J-Lo and is a whole ass mess, Everybody Wants Some!! & you got the movie The Cleansing Hour which is a surprisingly funny horror film!! i believe these all fit the category of A Guilty Pleasure movie!!

Please cover Matt and Ben's Air saw it on Saturday it was fantastic
Hard to get past the first 10mins of this. Like ok to not want to travel to canada but it really does nothing for America's reputation for having such insular knowledge of any other country. Also theres a lot of tv shows and movies set in "new york" that are actually filmed in toronto
