"Little Baby Curls", Fox Trot-1926 JP Seeburg KT Special:

Swell little 1929 Jesse Greer fox trot that is all but forgotten today, except for fans of Clark and Automatic coin-op rolls and QRS 88-note home player rolls! This catchy was first "played by" Walter Redding on QRS 4639 (5/29) and then soon snappily arranged for Style 4X and G-Roll orchestrions of Clark 4X-244, "FEVERISH RHYTHM recently recut by Tim Baxter of Meliora Music Rolls fame!

Ran across this tune a while back, I gather in it's "intended" presentation, on an Edison acoustic disc with a solo vocalist and small backing ensemble. It's a pretty languid thing, one of those "dear old mother" kinds of tunes. Imagine my shock at how the Clark arrangement has SO MUCH life and works beautifully as a dance tune. That probably explains why you'll have a hard time finding a dance band side of it, and why it's "all but forgotten". Based on the lyric (which is very ponderous and introspective), I doubt it was arranged for any "hot" ensemble. We're rather lucky someone at Melville Clark's operation saw some potential in this thing.

Yep. It’s one of those wistful late arrangements that becomes an “ear worm” that you may return to again and again. Musical change is in the air. You can sense a whiff of the Great Depression about to come with this one!
