Suite Sister Mary live during the Building Empires tour in 1991 was one of the most unforgettable 15 mins of my life. The concert is still the best live performance of any genre I've ever seen/experienced, but this track especially was simply incredible. Between Geoff Tate's vocal performance while singing a duet with Sister Mary on towering screens that were the back drop to the stage (Pamela Moore sang live with them for Operation: Livecrime, filmed later in May of 1991), the light show with thunder and lightning effects, and the rest of the band flawlessly performing the transitions of the "suite" paired with the gothic choir, everyone in the arena felt like they were in the church with Nikki & Mary. If you have a chance, check out the Livecrime performance.

Yes! I got to see this live too! It really ruins you for other live performances! I compare everything to Queensryche, and I'm just not finding an equal. IMO of course. They just happen to be the one band that does it for me on every level!
"As he died, he said, 'Thank you.' I just watched him bleed." Brilliant line.

One of the most powerful lines for me is: "He takes her once a week on the altar like a sacrifice.". The lyrics masterfully express the heinous act, and the way Geoff sings the line, conveys the contempt for Father William's continuous abuse of Mary. The subjects depicted in this story would be difficult to express in any format, but Geoff (as the creator of the concept and principle lyricist) and the WHOLE band were able to craft a masterpiece of emotional storytelling with just the right music to depict each phase of the tale perfectly!
They did release a live DVD of this album filmed over three nights, Operation LiveCrime. It would be worth your time to check it out sometime.
Best album EVER! By any standards!
Hell yea this is one of my fav albums ever
I saw them perform this album in it's entirety on the tour when it came out. Fantastic gig.

Yeah, that was the Empire tour '91, one of the best concerts I ever saw. On the Mindcrime album they didn't headline very often, but they never played Suite Sister Mary until they did the album on the Empire tour.
Never listend to Queensryche before, but met a great friend few years ago, younger about 15 years and he introduced me this album and today I'm shocked I did not find them earlier. Brilliant listening.
Yes it should have been a double album, but at the time Queensryche weren't big enough players to justify the investment. We were into the CD era, and vinyl quality was suffering because of it. Iron Maiden were definitely a strong influence, but I can also detect Pink Floyd in the way Queensryche use dynamics and dramatic and conceptual elements. I also hear shades of David Bowie when Geoff Tate drops into his lower register.

@@JimNewstead And Rob Halford from Priest, as you said. There's also a lot of early Fates Warning. All killer bands!
Love that album, been on my top 10 list for more than 30 years, they had some amazing live performance of it as well
Bless you, Bless you...bless you!

Ahhhhh-choooooo!
"Suite: Sister Mary" is just plain epic. When I play guitar to this song, I get so into it, I'm just gone. When it finishes, it takes me a minute to reorient. LOL
Suite sister Mary, what a masterpiece
yes, it is one of the rare "perfect albums". back in the day Axl Rose said "it was the best screenplay I ever read".
Queensryche is by far my favorite band from the era (I don't lump Metallica in there, they are their own genre). Geoff has been my favorite vocalist for 36 years. He's still incredible live and he's 64.
Suite Sister Mary is in itself a masterpiece. Still gives me chills.
One of my favorites 🤘🖤
What started my journey towards Progressive Music.
The choir voices on Suite Sister remind of the soundtrack to The Omen!!!!
Good evening Jim, Nice to hear you get it about this epic album. You will like this side probably even more. Geoff Tate is one of the best male metal singers. He does a great job as guest singer on Avantasia’s album Ghostlights with the song Seduction of decay. A lot of creaking noises on the LP. That’s why I changed to cd’s when they became affordable in the eighties. I still buy cd’s once and awhile but the first thing I do is put them on my NAS-drive.
Ohh one of my favorite albums
I like. I agree, even the very Iron maiden. I do like though. Might think about them, but even the voices are Iron maiden.

Lots of Maiden influences on this record, but also Floyd and Judas Priests.
I don't exactly know when or where, but this and the iron Madan album came out about the same time. So who sounds like who. I ask.

For some reason I recall knowing Mindcrime before Seventh Son of a Seventh Son but I love both albums dearly. I'd have to give the edge to Mindcrime, I think.
Great album. My only critique of it is that the mix was a bit lacking in the bottom end. To tinny. Outside of that, Epic.
The album has been re-released on double vinyl, sounds liek you might need an upgrade. But then again, you never really know what you're getting with these new vinyl re-releases. Sometimes they use a brickwalled digital master the make the vinyl from, so I couldn't tell you what you woudl get with this one, I'm not a vinyl person myself. I'd check some reviews from vinyl enthusiasts.
I'm not interested in anything you do until you get back to Van Halen! Your socks are going to be blown off!! Get on it man!!
