Listen to a normal snore versus a sleep apnea snore

Ғылым және технология

There is a major difference between a typical snore and a sleep apnea snore when it comes to our health and well being. Sleep apnea is related to increased hypertension, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer's disease, and about 6 years off your life when untreated. While "normal" snoring due to a cold or sickness is not usually a problem, chronic snoring could be a sign of a deeper issue like sleep apnea. When the snore is erratic, like is the case in this demo, that's when things might be particularly problematic. If you think you might have sleep apnea, you really really really ought to get it treated!
In this brief audio recording from the SleepSpace: Tracker and Coach app, available as a FREE TRIAL to all iPhone users, a typical snore is measured next to a hypopnea, which is an instance of sleep apnea. Sleep apnea translates from the Latin root "absence of breathing." In this example, there is a typical snore pattern until about 35 seconds into the recording when the sleeper begins to start gasping for air. Then about 1 min 10 seconds in they stop breathing for almost 30 seconds! You can imagine how this is not healthy for the heart, brain and overall health of anyone. Finally they begin to breath again towards the end of the recording.
Often times the sleeper is completely unaware of this issue, so recording the sound in the room can be an important first step in helping them get the motivation to get diagnosed and treated. You can easily do this using the SleepSpace app that will record sound throughout the night and seamlessly display it on your iPhone. Then send the recording to a sleep specialist who can guide you on the diagnosis path. Additionally, through a collaboration with Ognomy, you can now get diagnosed for sleep apnea without leaving the comfort of your own home, through a link found within the SleepSpace app.

Measuring sound in the bedroom is not just important for measuring snoring, but relevant to anyone who wants to better understand their bedroom environment. Often times, subtle sounds wake us up in the middle of the night the negatively impact sleep. I've seen it myself in our sleep lab when I noticed that an air conditioner turning on was waking up sleepers.
Additionally, SleepSpace plays sleep enhancing sounds throughout the night designed to entrain deeper sleep. You can listen to how SleepSpace adjusts these sounds when this feature is turned on. To enable this feature simple:
1) Download the SleepSpace App from the Apple App Store
2) Make sure your phone is updated to iOS 16 or later and make sure iCloud is enabled
3) Edit your Sleep Journey in the Sleep Screen and scroll down to turn on the snore recorder
4) Make sure your sleep partner concents to you recording sound throughout the night
5) Start your Sleep Journey
6) Save the recorded sound in the morning
IMPORTANT NOTE: Each night the sound recording will be overwritten in order to save space on your phone, so to save it, you will have to press the save recording button each morning, which stores the file in your iCloud account.
PRIVACY: No recorded data is ever saved on SleepSpace servers, for your privacy and protection.
For increased snore detection accuracy, purchase the SleepSpace Smart Bed which positions the phone closer to you at night for more precise recording of sound: smartbed.sleepspace.com/
Other signs of sleep apnea:
1) Teeth grinding
2) Waking up and feeling short of breath
3) Excessive daytime sleepiness
4) High blood pressure
5) Chest-pain at night
6) Restless sleeping
7) Morning headaches
Do you think you might have apnea? You can now get fully diagnosed from the comfort of your home. Just follow this link: sleepspace.com/review-of-wesp...
Even if you don't have apnea, snoring can be a major issue for your sleep partner by disrupting their sleep. There are other solutions for typical snoring as well such as a nasal dilator, addressing a deviated septum, or treating your allergies.
Other Risk Factors: Alcohol and being overweight often makes selep apnea worse.
Recommended Treatment
1) CPAP has the best effects of treating the problem.
2) A mandibular device has efficacy for mild to moderate and can be attained through a dentist trained in developing these special mouthpieces.
3) Myofunctional therapy and weight loss show some efficacy as well, but nothing close to the effectiveness of CPAP.
4) These solutions in combination are probably the most effective treatments.
Fun Sleep Fact: We often snore more during REM sleep due to our body being paralyzed during this phase, and is often why snoring happens later on in the night (when we have more REM).
Sincerely,
Dr. Dan Gartenberg

@layer9586 Your doctor or PCP should be able to refer you to a sleep clinic where you can be tested. There's a take-home monitor you can use which will basically record your sleep like what you hear in this video. Another method (I had this one myself) is an overnight sleep study where they hook you up to machines that will monitor your brain waves, pulse, heart, etc. as they record/monitor your sleeping. A doctor who specializes in that area will review your results and discuss treatment if needed. If you don't need a referral, you may be able to just call your local sleep clinic, but I suggest discussing it with your doctor. There are a lot of risks associated with long-term sleep apnea.

The 2nd type from 1:09 is what I have. Silence then a huge snort followed by gasps. This is what alerted that it was sleep apnea 🙁

I used an app to record my sleep and found for the first time that I snore quite loudly (What's more the volume ''crescendoed'') at lighter stages of sleep, but at normal breathing speed and it was more airy. There was also times when I was breathing normally and other times when the snoring was more like a low growl, in fact the app called those low growl recordings ''Cat'' since it tries to find disturbances, thinking it was perhaps a cat purring. What worries me the most is the two snorts and how strained the loud snoring is.

In the comments, people are having to ask, which is which? I see and hear only one event! if there is a second event where is it? and wouldn't this difference be more clear if it was marked on the screen? this proves that it is hard very hard to present clearly... just saying!

Hi Ricky, appreciate the feedback! In the description for the video it states that it starts out as a "normal" snore and then at around 1 min 10 seconds in you start hearing what apnea sounds like. The individual literally stops breathing for >20 seconds. Rhythmic snores are basically normal but when the breathing rate is the rhythmic this indicates a deeper issue like possible apnea. Hope this is helpful!

I'm not exactly sure but sometimes when we get older the cardilage in our nose builds up - have you tried a nasal dilator like this one? www.nasalaid.com/ If it works then you can rule it out and move onto things like allergies (dust mites is a common issue). You can get tested by an allergist and there are special pillowcases to address it.

That must be pretty bad. Mine is on a par with this, sometimes I do it when I'm half asleep if very tired and nodding off then the loud snorting/gasping wakes me up a little, and I recall it the next morning. I iive alone, was thinking of setting up recording to see if it actually gets worse in deep sleep. I didn't think it would much, but now you say yours is so much worse it makes me wonder just how bad it can get.
