Female Barred Owl (Tootsie) emerges from nest after hearing her partner (Pops) warn off an intruder with bill snapping (or bill clacking). The initial higher pitch noise comes from the male barred owl who is off screen followed by the lower pitch bill snapping of the female barred owl.
Barred owls make this noise for various reasons, this one is likely related to a nearby intruder. Suspect a racoon is in the area.
*******************************
Two Barred owls, affectionately named "Tootsie & Pop" have been in our backyard and neighborhood for the past few years. The nesting box was built 2022/2023 and hung on the tree. Unfortunately, it must not have been high enough as they did not seem interested and they roosted in a neighbor's yard. During the summer of 2023, while we had an arborist on site for various projects, we had him raise the box to it's new location. The owls have quickly taken residence since January 2024.
There is a nest box camera inside providing IR light; however, a squirrel must have chewed the wire because it cannot seem to broadcast any picture. A second camera has been mounted to a neighboring tree to provide the comings and goings throughout the night. Enjoy!
