I was a young boy watching this game live there and it was epic. That days players where pure talent. Danie Vanschalkwyk nr 12 for the Bulls ( Northern Tranvaal) was my rugby hero.

Pity the Springboks couldn't (until the 3rd Test). Also, I wouldn't consider Northern Transvaal a "small province" - nor would most Blou Bulle fans of the time... Plus, you're obviously not aware of the time a single club team from Wales beat the All Blacks. Now, that's an achievement!

Oh just for you ( Another accomplishment of Western Province, which no South African team has ever been able to match, is the double victories over the All Blacks the first being (10-3) played on 15 August 1928 and again (12-11) on 16 July 1976, while several countries have never been able to beat the All Black team, Province managed it twice hee hee!!) NOT 1 BUT TWICE.

@@johnsmithwinkwink1704 What do you mean "another accomplishment"? The video is about the Blou Bulle (Northern Transvaal) but then you switch to Western Province - those are different Provinces so they are different achievements, but all three are certainly praiseworthy. However, I would still contend that a single club (Llanelli, in 1972) beating a national team of the stature of the All Blacks is still at least as good, if not better than, Provincial teams achieving the same feat. After all, a Province has a far bigger pool of potential players to pick from than a single club... Llanelli's feat is unlikely to be repeated as national teams don't generally play club teams anymore during tours (plus the structure of the game has changed enormously since professionalism came in - to the detriment of individual clubs).

Incredible player, defensively he wasn’t great but he could do everything else to genius level and just made it look effortless. A three time lion and I think one of only 5 lions to have won more than one series.

I was there in Loftus that day, at Kings Park for the 2nd Test, and Ellis Park for the final (3rd) Test... The Saffa's were completely despondent until the Bulls win, then expected to come back in the 2nd Test and when they didn't they had to make the most of the win in Jo'burg. Great memories, good times!

I don’t know about despondent. I was there too and I came from that game thinking it would be a 3-0 walk over. These were mostly second string teams shorn of Boks. Boks scored 9 tries to 3 but because they had no kicker, it was always frustrating uphill.

@@mahlanguism Maybe it was just the guys I worked with. They did seem to swing between the 'boks being the best thing since sliced bread (24th June 1995 onwards) to them being crap when they lost (repeatedly) to the All Blacks in 1996...

Back then, jerseys and shorts were really nice to wear (except when it rained). It's also surreal to see a South African team with only white players. Things have changed in 25 years and SA is even stronger thanks to the inclusion of Black players.

Guscott was a bit of a cheat code at times in attack. Give him the ball, what do we need here: run, step, chip, grubber, drop goal? Whatever was needed, when it mattered he did it.

Northern Transvaal's winning strategy? Keep it tight, challenge the Lions up front, give nothing away and then run straight at Tony Underwood as soon as you make a break. Learning from Lomu in '95, priceless.

Amazing game, and surprisingly the lions never wanted to play the bulls after that 🤣🤣🤣, in 2009 the bulls were unstoppable, by far the best in the super rugby, would have been a good game vs. The lions. Then 2021 once again they didn’t wanted to play the best in SA (btw the bulls did then play the SA’A side and beat them 17-14, what dis the lions do against SA’a side?

@@markbrown-sb2zm I am afraid my knowledge of this tour is exclusively based in the documentary (which even as a South African, if you like sport, it's great. Enough time and two series win have passed you won't hate watching the Lions win). I have a fairly decent knowledge of all th games and the lions squads etc. But as for the politics at the time of SA rugby, I don't know. I do know they lost a series to the ABs the previous year.
