In his eighties and still going strong, Lionel Hampton was one of the grand old men of jazz. In this concert, he plays with a line-up of musicians who, like him, helped to make the history of jazz. Their foot-tomping swing-era music sets the audience alight.
Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 - August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, bandleader and actor. Hampton worked with jazz musicians from Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
Lionel Hampton began his career playing drums for the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band. One of his trademarks as a drummer was his ability to do stunts with multiple pairs of sticks such as twirling and juggling without missing a beat.
During this period he began practicing on the vibraphone. In 1930 Louis Armstrong came to California and hired the Les Hite band, asking Hampton if he would play vibes on two songs. So began his career as a vibraphonist, popularizing the use of the instrument in the process.

Gosh, Love those old cats. My father played with a couple of those guys. I did some playing. ( Playing piano)After my mom died, my dad remarried, he died 2 years later, his wife gave away his set of vibes, it took me a year or so to get over it. Now, I want to go get a set. Love that whole groove 🤭

Boy what a lineup. Brought up on numbers like Hamps Boogie, memories of my father and his great 78's collection which has given me a lifelong love of jazz. Met the great Al Grey at a small gig in the early 80's and he signed an LP, " jazz is good for the heart" Treasured .

Much as I love Lionel Hampton, this was, for the most part, a fairly meaningless improvisation by the ensemble. Plenty of individual skill, but not much coherence. The bassist meandered around with, seemingly, little harmonic sense - though his solo was impressive. The drummer did the stereotypical jazz drummer thing - though everybody smartened up at the end with the scripted riffs. Am I being unfair . . . ?
