Directed by band member Joe Hahn, the indoor scenes of the music video are set in St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague, Czech Republic as are the outdoor scenes. The school interiors, the classroom, the corridor and the outside playground are set in Johannes Kepler Grammar School (Gymnázium Jana Keplera) in Prague. The bridge scenes were all shot on Prague's famed Charles Bridge. The video was shot over June 2003, even though vocalist Chester Bennington was suffering from severe abdominal and back pains at the time, so the band's performance was filmed afterwards in a matching cathedral in Los Angeles. The final video was released within the release of the single early September 2003.
The video follows the domestic and social problems faced during a day in the life of an unpopular outcast young female student (portrayed by Briana Evigan). The girl apparently spends much of her time drawing pictures, revealing that she probably has dreams of becoming an artist. She is largely shunned and ridiculed at school, considering that when she is told off by the lecturer for drawing in class everybody laughs at her and teases her, when she trips on the stairs nobody stops to help her up, and that when she tries to join a group of girls at a lunch table they immediately get up and leave. There are also self-inflicted cut marks on her arms, which spell out "NUMB". During the song's climax, she is shown in her room, as she ties up her hair with a paintbrush, and throws paint at a canvas in anger. At the end, she runs into the church that the band was playing in, almost as if she heard them, only to find the church left behind empty.
In November 2018, the song became the band's first video to reach over one billion views on their KZread channel, as well as the most watched rock music video on the platform.

I'm the guy in the bottom right of the video with the pink headphones who started crying. The reason I cried is that at the time I recorded the reaction, Chester's death was still very close to me. Chester was my idol and Numb was the first song I had as a ringtone on my old Nokia cell phone when I was a kid. I can identify myself with the song a lot and was mentally broken on the day of the recording anyway. I'm still not able to listen to One More Light..

I understand you man, when I am upset and listen to Linkin park I numb myself and cry a lot, I identify myself with most of the songs, Linkin park is everything to me

I agree man. I feel the same way he does whenever i hear linkin park. All the pain you can sense in the lyrics that chester was going thru and there was nothing anyone could do to help him. Shit sucks.

Chester had real talent when it came to singing, i went to many of his concerts and it was like the voice of an Angel in a mortal body. He had left this world to soon, he has left a mark on this earth that is so meaningful that no one will ever forget his music and the pain he went through mentally.

I can’t listen to many of their songs without crying. They were the most influential band to me when I was a teenager and when Chester died it was hard to lose him. I’ve seen them live twice. The way to music made me feel changed the day he died. There’s so much more sorrow attached, now. Two years after Chester died, my stepfather took his life in the same manner.
I will be proud enough to introduce Chester Bennington to my kids as an immortal singing icon
The PERFECT song embodiment of crippling depression, especially from a personal standpoint. This year marked the first time that I EVER thought of committing suicide by slitting my wrists with a box cutter. I willed myself to NOT reach for that blade, though. That guilt is still in the back of my mind, because I suffer so heavily from separation anxiety and fear of abandonment, I was going to inflict the same emotional pain on my family. As depressed as I may get, I'll never act on it, because it scared the hell out of me the first time.
