Link to the Past Epic Orchestral Medley

My Bandcamp page is currently undergoing maintenance! In the meantime, free downloads of most of my VGM arrangements can be found here: www.dropbox.co... Please also consider donating to support this channel here: ko-fi.com/rebe...
Composing this LttP epic orchestral medley was unending fun. This was my first Zelda game, and the one that got me into the series. I played Link's Awakening around the same time, so they're pretty close- but I didn't have a gameboy, so I had only seen glimpses of LA on my brother's gameboy. LttP was the first of many games to affect me on a very deep, emotional level. I will always be grateful to Koji Kondo for his soundtrack.
Tracks included in medley:
Fairy

Rain Scene
Opening/Prologue
Lost Woods
Kakariko Village
Light World Dungeon
Master Sword

Dark World
Bunny

I can't agree more with your description...Zelda 3 has affected me so much too...it is so epic in every way, the music, the storyline, the environments...Koji Kondo is a genius and this Zelda...was...so powerful....Its eems like Breath of the Wilde 2 is going back to the Sacred Land if those flying stones are the ones of A Link To The Past artworks...I hope so much that they will be refering to Zelda 3 it would be insane....

I feel you man. Music can be so utterly nostalgic and powerful, and especially video game music for me. This particular game blew me away when I first played it as a kid and I developed an obsession with it. Listening to these themes brings me to a magical place within that I cannot share with others either, as it is my own personal experience. What may just sound like pretty music to someone else is an entire world within me that these melodies bring out.

@@williamkoscielniak820 I have felt that way about this game in particular for a long time in a way that’s difficult to articulate. I loved reading books like the hobbit around that time and if I had to describe it I’d say it’s the way you envision the world in your mind’s eye. This 2-bit scape was graphical enough to help me view the world without being so immersive that my creativity couldn’t help me envision a fully fleshed out world that probably differed from the way any other person saw it, though I imagine their view differed from one another too. OOT which I love kind of crosses that line as would majoras mask and all subsequent 3D titles. ALTTP is my favorite and most replayed for this reason.

Imagine just being a local child on a stormy night, having the Princess, the most powerful ruler in the kingdom speaking to you in your mind to help her, seeing your only family, your uncle, leave into the rain, never to return (well, at least at the moment), and then being tasked by him as he's dying to save the Princess and set out on a dangerous adventure as the fate of two worlds lies on your shoulders over a cosmic power. That sense of stepping up to the plate for such a task as the scene opens on a stormy night with this epic music: it's one of those moments you really can't forget the first you play.

It's a bitter sweet joy listening to the music. Brings back certain memories of my teenage years. Especially the time of 1997 when I was 14. That was the time you could see the comet Hale-Bopp in the sky. I played this game with a friend I went to school with. We had no instructions or guide about the game hence it came as a surprise when we thought we had beaten the game but it suddenly turned into the Dark World. We played a lot of games at that time. Zelda, Secret of Mana and the Street Fighter II series were our favorites. These games are adventurous, touching - and from a nostalgic perspective that I have now - touching in a verry personal way . At the beginning of 1998 my friend moved away and we never saw each other again. Now 23 years have past and every now and then I wonder how he did in life, where's he at right now... So every now and then I look up stuff like this video on KZread and bathe in memories.

I'm sorry to hear about your breakup (I know those suck, and they make a person grieve similarly to a death) but glad that you are single, if that's better for you. It's funny, you know, a dysfunctional relationship is like congestion, in a way, but congestion of the heart/emotions. Once you free yourself from it, everything starts to flow smoothly again. I'll bet you have a lot pent up inside of you that's been trying to get out; I'm definitely pleased that my music helped facilitate that creative spark! ^_^ Drawing is the best thing you can do right now... drawing, being a kid, loving yourself and being free.

AlttP came packaged with the SNES I got for Christmas. I didn't even care about Zelda at the time so I put it off for months, but one day I was bored of the other games I had and decided to give it a shot. It changed my damned life. It opened up worlds I never knew existed both within and outside of me. This soundtrack is etched into my soul and my childhood as well. That's part of the beauty of these games though. For you and me AlttP is etched into us, while for younger people it may be Twilight Princess or Wind Waker that winds up etched into their brain when they grow older.

@Fabrizio (and Rebecca): Yes, 100%! In general, I've noticed that RET's most impressive tracks are often of more easily forgotten melodies (not featured often in the games, just plain not so great in original form, etc.). But yeah, the Sanctuary melody really stood out to me even above and beyond that tendency. That and the more memorable flute boy melody at the end--beautiful and dare I say compassionate in its own right and a very canny shout-out to Ocarina's ending. @Rebecca: You are amazing. So far, I've listened to this one and your Chrono Trigger medley. I'm not that technically skilled at this stuff, but I've been told I have a good ear and general aptitude for music so I often get annoyed when listening to fan tracks that make me go "I could have made that rearrangement so much better!) But no ego or frustration for me here. You are not only talented but I can tell very sentimentally inspired; you arrange the melodies with loving care.

I appreciate that you made this. This game very relevant to my life as well. I grew up with a fairly toxic family life and often left the house to play outside or played video games to escape from the constant negativity that plagued the household as long as I can remember. My first game was actually the Legend of Zelda. However I didn't play it as much as this cause a friend had that game and I only ever played it at his house at the time. I also wasn't allowed to play it or own it because it had magic or something... don't remember. I had crazy parents. One day near when this came out a friend of mine had left me borrow this and super metroid. I loved both. I still regularly went outside to avoid family but I also played both of those games very regularly. Years later when I bought my first ocarina the very first song I thought to learn was flute boy's song.... shortly followed by the warp whistle from Mario 3/Zelda. I also sold candy and lemonaid and did various work around the neighborhood to get money to buy my own tv, a gameboy, and zelda: LA, lttp, metroid II, metroid III [super metroid]. Zelda always reminds me of a welcomed escape from a toxic life.

What a beautiful story! I hope you can reclaim some of those childhood years and feel the same magic, but with none of the stress from your family drama. I hope you're in an emotionally safe environment these days, with people who love and respect you- and like Zelda!

This is exactly 100% perfect. First Zelda game for me indeed. I absolutely have no words to describe the sensation I had while listening to this. I'm litterally shaking as I'm writing this comment. You did a wonderful work.

+SaFlamingFire Thank you. Knowing that others get as much out of hearing these medleys as I get out of making them really fills me with so much joy. :')

I grew up very poor. My mom would get a disability check once a month. Welfare check and food stamps. One month we ran out of food. So I volunteered to sell my NES so we could eat. I had allot of games. Probably around 30 or 40. I had the advantage controller. 2 regular controllers. The power pad and, the power glove. I took all of that to the pawn shop done the road. They offered us $70 for it. I started crying. I told them okay. I cried all the way home. She said she promised to make it up to me. She started cleaning the inside of people's houses while I was at school. The following month we went to Kmart like we always did. I was looking at the games after we ate lunch at the cafeteria. She says I'll get you the new Nintendo and three extra games. I got the Super Nintendo w/Super Mario World. Then I got Zelda, Turtles in time and, Sim City. I was so excited. I read the instructions of Zelda on the way home. She was a great mom. She past away 7 years. Everytime I hear the ending of Zelda I cry. Because I know she busted her butt to get it for me. The soundtrack to this game is still my favorite.

She was the best. She raised me alone. My father was never there. He was a drunk and he would beat up my mom. When I was a little one he picked me up and slammed my head into a coffee table. I don't remember it but my mom told me about it. He spent more than half of his life in prison. He died doing what he loved. He got drunk feel asleep on his back. Nobody from his family bothered to tell me. I found it on the internet back in 2002. He lived to be 69 years old. I wanted to see him just one time and ask him why he didn't love me. I promised myself when I was 4 or 5 that I'd never be that way. Sometimes my mom was able to grab the iron skillet. She'd hit him on the head. He would wake up the next day and he was a totally different person. My mom would hide the money so we'd have food. He would always find it. I'm so lucky to have her as a mother. I'm sorry I got so serious.

Well, it's actually a good thing that you're able to talk about all of this stuff. That takes real introspection and courage, I think.

I love it. A Link to the Past was my first Zelda game too, and I still love it to bits. Your medley combined the tracks in the game in such a beautiful way, I could just see all the events play right in front of my eyes (not just because there was amazing fanart to look at) in a wonderful, cinematic way. Thanks for letting me experience my favorite game in a whole new way.

Link to the past is the only Zelda game I absolutely love and your arrangement and composition of the soundtrack is brilliant. I’ve been a guitarist for 25 years and I know a good musician when I see one. Well done!

Oh so definitely worth the wait. And LttP is an awesome game, I'm glad it got such a beautiful medley. For the record, it was the second Zelda game I played (after the rented original on the NES). I still love it even after all these years. And to hear this then? WOwowowoWOwoWOW~! Gorgeous.
