FYI Lingsir Wengi originally played in gamelan (traditional Indonesian music instrument) which is surely pentatonic, and watching Alip's rendition really mind blowing

I'm mentally trying to process the music along with you. Wandering in the minor harmonics like that gives it a very ethnic feel. It's beautiful... just strange to Western ears. In some ways it reminds me of gypsy or spanish guitar a bit. I love it... it's just very different.

From what i see, this is the one song where Alip has to concentrate 😊 On other songs, he just closed his eyes or gazing far away.. No need to look at his guitar at all 😄❤

A lil Kiss intro to start the day, eh? And while I clearly love modern music, I AM *HERE* for any and all traditional music you review, from any source. This is AMAZING to watch him manipulate his guitar to emulate the sound of the instrument the song was originally composed for & played on. Would have been fretless (?) and I guess bending the guitar strings doesn't give him the sound (tonal flexibility?) he's trying to produce? I mean, or, he's just playing/flexing with his guitar prowess ;) What a gorgeous version he's created here. Wonder how much of the harmonies/fingerpicking accompaniment holds closely to Indonesian traditional styles, and how much is his own fingerpicking-influence/modern composition choices. Incredible. I'm headed off to find the song played on its original instrument. edit #2 - huh, the only versions of the song I see other than Alip Ba Ta's are female vocalists - wasn't expecting that; was expecting to find a) a lot more versions than 3, and b) that the song was traditionally instrumental (given what Alip is doing with his guitar). hahahaha edit #3 - ok, I refined my youtube search using the words others used in their comments here, that I thought were the names of traditional instruments, and found listings of the song that were otherwise 'hidden.'

@@michaelgoyettemusic I saw some gamelan versions, but gamelan is a melodic percussion ensemble - a 'drum' (not a drum) for each note, struck with a mallet or hammer or stick (not sure), huge arrays of them to play melodies. I think the gamelan ensembles can include other melodic instruments though. bah, hit reply without adding: I just figured that the way Alip is manipulating the guitar to slide in/out of notes means he's emulating a version played on something that's not a gamelan ensemble.

​@@ariframasatria179 Kecapi is Sundanese, Javanese calls that plucked string instrument, that is part of the Gamelan ensemble, "siter", sometimes written in an English encyclopedia as "zither". You are correct, Rebecca, Gamelan is a percussion set, mostly, but it does have a string instrument, and a flute sometimes as part of it. The siter, has no fret, @Rebecca you're right again, and is played by plucking it. Probably closest to it, if you've seen one, is a Chinese plucked zither. Although the Javanese zither is smaller. As in any folk/traditional music, the notation is developed much later, and that bent sound that Alip tries to emulate is, I'd imagine, so hard to produce on other major notation string instruments. To make a guitar sound like zither that has minor tones requires more than skills, I suppose, but an unconventional imagination.

The song Lingsir Wengi was originally made by Sunan Kalijaga who is one of the guardians of Wali Songo who is famous in Java for teaching goodness by introducing and teaching Islam in Java. This song is used after performing the night prayer which serves to ward off evil or interference from supernatural beings and also implies a prayer to God. But now people have interpreted this song as something negative or scary and forbid to sing it at certain times.

Michael, you are not the first person struggled to imitate Alip's playing. He just unorthodox guitar player! He literally 'playing' the guitar.
