After my 4 cable method video yesterday for the Helix, I received a lot of requests to do a similar video for the HX Stomp. So, here it is. In this video I discuss how to run your cables and make your settings on the Stomp to get the most out of the 4 cable method for Stomp. I really hope this video helps some folks get the most of their HX Stomp.
Thanks so much for watching and please subscribe to my channel if you are so inclined...

Hey, Jason. I just wanted you to know that your videos are really helping me cope with the stress and anxiety of our current situation. It’s awesome to be able to tune out everything else, even if it’s just for an hour, and watch a super informative Helix video and then go tweak some tones. Thank you!
What a great video, as a beginner it’s a minefield….there are so many videos (maybe too many) and some are confusing. This has helped me massively and convinced me I made a good purchase with my HX stomp. Thanks again 👍🏻
Your explanation of this is SO great! Thank you!
this video was so helpful for me.Thanks!
Thank you so much. It helped me a lot. Very clearly understood.
Very good and helpful. Thanks again...
Another great tutorial!!!!!
I have made this into the 3 Cable Method! It is really 4 cable, but for the 2 cable to go to the Amp's Effect's Loop, I use a single TRS stereo cable and 2 Y Adapter's on each end. Makes things a little neater. Great explainer vid. Thanks!
Very clear. Thanks mate
Thanks a lot of for this video! Nice work :)
Great and clear explanation! I was looking for this info …this video makes me suscribe to tour channel …thnks a lot Jason!! 🙏🏻 regards from Mty Mx 🙋🏻♂️
Nice work! 18min but def worth it :) 12:52 for the recap of the whole signal chain.
Superb! Thanks :)
Hey man. Awesome video. If I wanted to just use some pedals before the amp and nothing after, could I just put a send block after the effects on the stomp and only use 2 cables? Thanks
Indeed it helped
Hello. can you help with this problem? I connected the cables like you said. When I add a block "FX Loop L" and turn it on in my processor, the sound disappears and the effects do not work, when I turn off everything sounds. What is the problem? I use Line 6 hs xtomp xl
Hey Jason does the volume level on the helix matter in terms of tone or is it just preference. Tried everything you taught and worked like a charm. Played with either cranking the stomp and turning down the clean channel of my orange. And the reverse. Turn down the stomp and turn up the clean channel on the amp. Just curious what to do here. You mentioned cranking the helix. So was curious if this was true for the stomp too. Thanks! Love the videos
welp you just showed me this thing does exactly what I was hoping it would do. It's a toss up right now between this and the H-90. I had some time to mess with an H-90 and I found the user interface to be absolutely bonkers, and I come from a technical background
Super helpful! Also super Interested in if you found a way around the noise that having the USB plugged in creates.........
12:08 a killer soud!!
Hi Jason Great video. Where do I find the video you did for the Helix? I do not see the link in the description for the 4 Cable method for the Helix. Jeff
Jason, I just got an HX Stomp XL and was following along with your fantastic setup video! I was testing each effect and it seems to be working perfect. When you turn off the effects loop block shouldn't that stop your delay and reverb from passing through? I have both the delay and the reverb turned on....then I selected the effects loop and turned off but I could still hear them passing through. Just curious if your does that as well. thanks again , great video. Bret
Great video. I’m using the Friedman IR pedal. Is there a way to come out of my Apex stomp XL in stereo using my Friedman pedal?
Sr, great video. Thanks. Is there any chance to have a recommendation in my pedal board chain ? Because, l use the stomp with wha-whammy- Morley and distortion out of the stomp. How can l make it ?
Think I got my answer there at the 15 min mark! Man, 10,000 videos on youtube, and none really explain that!
that was a hell of an explication, one of the best I've seen. could I add analog pedals (eg. fuzz, overdrive) between guitar and hx connection? so I can still have my favorite pedals? and add midi reverb with hx midi in/out and control everything with a controller? Congrats!
Jason so when you have it's set to return to because of global settings you hook up the cable to the return 2 to from the amp send?
Found this video when researching the HX Stomp: about using the pre-amps in de FX Loop. The signal is still first hitting the pre-amp of your real / tube amp right? It gets the 'colouring' of the real pre-amp, then going through the FX loop throught 'modelled pre-amp' of the HX stomp. Am I right? And if so, would it be possible to program a preset in the stomp in such a way to skip the real pre-amp at all?
Which would you choose as your go-to rig: Helix/HX Stomp or Helix/HX Stomp + tube amp?
So putting the Stomp pre amp into the effects loop portion of the chain, automatically bypasses the tube amps preamp?
Hi! where would you place a noise gate and where would I place say a drum machine/looper like a Boss RC-10
I do not see the link to the other video in the description. Anyone have it or the name of the video? I scrolled through all of Jason's video and searched for it but no luck. Thanks
Why the effects i put after the FXLoop block are not working? im 100 per cent sure the cables are properly connected... Should I change something in the global settings maybe ?
Using this method what would be the best approach to get a solo boost?
When using one of the Amp models in the Stomp, wouldn't it make sense to turn off the FX send/return block so you are just sending your guitar signal straight to the Amp block, and then straight to the power amp, so you don't go through both your amp's preamp AND the Amp block's preamp?
Hi, i wanted to ask some advice, im new using hx stomp.. I have an Amplifier and it has return and send on it. So what should i do if i want to use my amp cab modelling in hx stomp with that ‘real amp’ as a monitor ? im still confuse about the cable route, and i dont want to use any sounds from the ‘real amplifier’.
I want to use my amps fx loop AND put my traditional drive pedals in the Stomp. I want my pitch fx before my distortion pedals and pre amp and my wet fx in my amps loop. Help.
Using the preamp module doesn't bypass your tube amp preamp though?
Do you find 4cm sucks the tone out of your amp? I ran mine through a Mark V but I find it affects the natural tone too much with no blocks activated.
lol i need to write this down somewhere but typing it here in case anyone else needs it 10:03 i thought it was like a regular amp output to amp output and one big ass effects loop but no its a little different Guitar> main input of Stomp Hxstomp SEND > Amp Input Guitar Amp SEND > Hx stomp return Left Main Output of Stomp > Guitar Amp Return
Hi are they TS or TRS 1/4 JACKS?
Did you have any issue with ground loops?
Hello Jason do you have any videos about how to get and or setup IR’s into Helix ?

Just what I want to know!!!! Please Jason help us!
Does it suck tone. I had the HX Effects and it killed the tone of my Dr Z Maz 18. It's a bummer because it would have made things easier than my pedalboard
Off topic a bit, but, where did you get that midi cable? Looks really small. 6:59
could you do a 4CM Stomp and Tonex?
Hey Jason, thanks for the video! I am planning on purchasing a hx stomp but there's one thing that got me confused. I wanna know if it is possible too use the preamps from the hx stomp and just use the power amp of my orange rocker 15(wich has an effects loop) and skip the preamp from my actual amplifier. Cause at 15:14 minutes you say that if we use the preamp of the stomp after the fx loop makes its better cause we are not hitting the preamp of our amp with another preamp and that makes sense to me, but than you say that by putting it after the fx loop we are bypassing the preamp of the amplifier and I don't get how is that possible if we have one of the jacks connected to the input of the amp. Could you clarify me this? And is there a chance to actually bypass the preamp of my amplifier so I can use the preamps from of the stomp? Thanks for the help and good luck on your channel! Cheers

If you want to use the amp sim from the hx stomp you can plug the hx stomp output into the fx loop return of your orange amp. Then you will be using the line 6 amp sim preamp instead of the actual orange amp. You don't need the 4 cable method for that, jut plug your guitar into the hx stomp input and the hx output into the amplifier fx loop return. At the startbofvthis video though he is using the 4cm so that you can put for example the hx stomp overdrive before the actual amplifier's preamp then come back to the stomp to use delay etc then go back into the amifier's loop return and through the power amp to the speakers. Not sure if I helped or made it more confusing 😀
Why is the output at inst level? I thought the power amp was expecting line leve...
With this cabling method, where do I put my external loop pedal? Thanks!

I’m assuming in between the final cable and return of the effects loop.
Anyone have any info on firmware update 2.91
Do you not do replies for your subscribers ? I think you should as you have a great personality
the only problem with this method is that you lose the stereo aspect of the helix. Now if instead of using the Revv's snd/rtn, use the XLR out of the Revv using the torpedo ( I realize not all amps have this feature) back into the helix and add your stereo wet effects after. Then you maintain the stereo out from the Helix into your FRFR speakers or studio mons, if you have it set up that way.

@@JasonSadites It's another version of a 4cm (I'm using 4 cables) that uses the unique features of the Revv D20/G20 amps (you could also do this with an external torpedo or similar piece of gear). I realize your video describes a method that works with any amp that has an FX loop. My comment just suggests another possibility that allows you to retain the stereo aspect of the rig which is something most of us Helix users have grown to love.

This was really helpful, thanks Jason! Also, I see (or, hear) your point Chris. I’m actually doing the same with my Two Notes LeClean and CAB M+. I’m using the FX loop L send for sending instrument level signal to my gain stages and preamp, and getting back to the stomp using R return on line level, adding the stereo (post) FX to “torpedoed” signal. This approach takes two blocks (send L, ret R) but IMO is worth the cost, especially with more blocks available nowadays.

Yes, thank you! I was wracking my brain trying to figure out having the stomp in 4cm and keep stereo outs to monitors, my Mark 5 25 has cab clone! lol I am sure I will get confused again....but I think I am seeing a path! lol
Great videos and super helpful information! Thank you for making them! I have a question and maybe a video idea. Wondering if it's possible to link the POD GO with the HX Stomp in a 4 cable method while still having the ability to put some of the effects from each pedal in front of the amp as well as the FX Loop. For example, Say you wanted the Teemah from the POD GO to hit the front of your amp and a Delay from the GO in the loop while using an EQ from the Stomp in the front and a reverb from the Stomp in the loop. Is that possible? Thank you in advance for helping me out! :-)
It would be super cool if you demonstrated how to use the 4cm with the Stomp AND additional pedals both in front of the amp and in the effects loop.

It wouldn't be much different than this video. You can place pedals anywhere on those 4 cables. It really depends on where you personally want to place your pedals... Example: you want to place a wah before the HX Stomp, a Small Clone between the HX Stomp send and the amp input, an Eventide Timefactor between the amp FX send and the HX stomp return, and a Strymon BigSky between the HX output and the amp FX return. Again it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Have fun experimenting!

@@gregypooh I mean additional PHYSICAL pedals. I have a Medusa chorus pedal I want to use as well as a Vapor Trail delay. Your video is great, but is restricted to pedals internal to the Stomp/Helix. Line 6 talks about integration with your pedal board but does a terrible job at explaining it. Physical pedals that go in front of your amp are pretty easy to deal with, but when you get into pedals that would ordinarily go into an effects loop, things get more complicated. For instance you need an Insert cable to split the signal. How do you hook it up? Then, how do you program the Stomp to accommodate that new signal path. So that's what I was suggesting a video for... basically do Line 6's job for them....I've got it figured out, but getting there was super painful and totally avoidable if Line 6 just finished the job.

@@prometherion3089 Me Either a bunch of videos claim to explain it then don't at all and show no photos of their boards or where they plugged what into. They say it over and over very messy but no photos to just demonstrate what they mean. Its unbelievably confusing.
Can you record through usb with a 3 cable method? Meaning use your amps preamp as a block but not send the signal back through your speakers? Would that blow up your amp?

You have to have an amp head that can run without a cabinet, there are a few

Or get something like a Mesa Cab Clone or Suhr Reactive Load to take the mechanical place of the speakers. Otherwise you'll blow up your output transformer (assuming its a tube amp)
I did the same cabling, but when I deactivate the fx send block, the volume is increasing (4x louder) significantly. What could be wrong? any ideas?

With my DSL20 amp it by passes the pre-amp and goes direct to the power tubes. ie: full volume. Hope that helps
You can set the output to Line level and drop the return on the FX loop block -12dB. You get a little more headroom, especially in amps with hotter loops.
I came up with a different way to use the HX with the 4 Cable Method, but without using up a Send/Return > Mono > FX Loop block. I use the L/Mono Input and Right Input along with the L/Mono Output and Right Output. Route the L/Mono Input to Path A of the Split (full left) and the L/Mono Output to your amp's Input. In that path you can add compression, gain, pitch, etc. (pre-gain) type effects. (make sure to use Split Y) Route the Right Input to Path B of the Split (full right). Hook up the Right Input to your amp's Effects Send and the Right Output to your amps Effects Return. In that path you can add your delays, chorus, reverbs, etc. (post-gain) type effects. I haven't found a place where I need to switch between my amp's current channel to a built-in HX Stomp preamp, so this works great for me. I also have setup patches where I route everything to Path B of the Split, completely bypassing the amps preamp and I add in a HX Preamp near the start of the signal chain and then route other effects accordingly. I'll post a video of the process over the next few days. ~JF
Need a lot more photos. I took apart my pedal board super stoked to get this tutorial going and you confused me so fast. More photos of where to plug what into would be great. You said we are working totally mono but the only effects loop send on the hx stomp literally says stereo on it. So now im totally lost.
Calling the Helix 3 lines menu "hamburger menu" is sooo brilliant! I'm gonna steal it, sorry :D

It will be better if you show the cable connections on the video
I have the Revv g20 and a hx effects. Such a pain in the ass to get good sound from this. A horizon precision drive pedal made the g20 sound metal as F. I'm gonna use your tips to try again with the HX edit. Thanks
