After my 4 cable method video yesterday for the Helix, I received a lot of requests to do a similar video for the HX Stomp. So, here it is. In this video I discuss how to run your cables and make your settings on the Stomp to get the most out of the 4 cable method for Stomp. I really hope this video helps some folks get the most of their HX Stomp.

Hey, Jason. I just wanted you to know that your videos are really helping me cope with the stress and anxiety of our current situation. It’s awesome to be able to tune out everything else, even if it’s just for an hour, and watch a super informative Helix video and then go tweak some tones. Thank you!

Hey Jason does the volume level on the helix matter in terms of tone or is it just preference. Tried everything you taught and worked like a charm. Played with either cranking the stomp and turning down the clean channel of my orange. And the reverse. Turn down the stomp and turn up the clean channel on the amp. Just curious what to do here. You mentioned cranking the helix. So was curious if this was true for the stomp too. Thanks! Love the videos

Jason, I just got an HX Stomp XL and was following along with your fantastic setup video! I was testing each effect and it seems to be working perfect. When you turn off the effects loop block shouldn't that stop your delay and reverb from passing through? I have both the delay and the reverb turned on....then I selected the effects loop and turned off but I could still hear them passing through. Just curious if your does that as well. thanks again , great video. Bret

Found this video when researching the HX Stomp: about using the pre-amps in de FX Loop. The signal is still first hitting the pre-amp of your real / tube amp right? It gets the 'colouring' of the real pre-amp, then going through the FX loop throught 'modelled pre-amp' of the HX stomp. Am I right? And if so, would it be possible to program a preset in the stomp in such a way to skip the real pre-amp at all?

When using one of the Amp models in the Stomp, wouldn't it make sense to turn off the FX send/return block so you are just sending your guitar signal straight to the Amp block, and then straight to the power amp, so you don't go through both your amp's preamp AND the Amp block's preamp?

Hey Jason, thanks for the video! I am planning on purchasing a hx stomp but there's one thing that got me confused. I wanna know if it is possible too use the preamps from the hx stomp and just use the power amp of my orange rocker 15(wich has an effects loop) and skip the preamp from my actual amplifier. Cause at 15:14 minutes you say that if we use the preamp of the stomp after the fx loop makes its better cause we are not hitting the preamp of our amp with another preamp and that makes sense to me, but than you say that by putting it after the fx loop we are bypassing the preamp of the amplifier and I don't get how is that possible if we have one of the jacks connected to the input of the amp. Could you clarify me this? And is there a chance to actually bypass the preamp of my amplifier so I can use the preamps from of the stomp? Thanks for the help and good luck on your channel! Cheers

If you want to use the amp sim from the hx stomp you can plug the hx stomp output into the fx loop return of your orange amp. Then you will be using the line 6 amp sim preamp instead of the actual orange amp. You don't need the 4 cable method for that, jut plug your guitar into the hx stomp input and the hx output into the amplifier fx loop return. At the startbofvthis video though he is using the 4cm so that you can put for example the hx stomp overdrive before the actual amplifier's preamp then come back to the stomp to use delay etc then go back into the amifier's loop return and through the power amp to the speakers. Not sure if I helped or made it more confusing 😀

the only problem with this method is that you lose the stereo aspect of the helix. Now if instead of using the Revv's snd/rtn, use the XLR out of the Revv using the torpedo ( I realize not all amps have this feature) back into the helix and add your stereo wet effects after. Then you maintain the stereo out from the Helix into your FRFR speakers or studio mons, if you have it set up that way.

@@JasonSadites It's another version of a 4cm (I'm using 4 cables) that uses the unique features of the Revv D20/G20 amps (you could also do this with an external torpedo or similar piece of gear). I realize your video describes a method that works with any amp that has an FX loop. My comment just suggests another possibility that allows you to retain the stereo aspect of the rig which is something most of us Helix users have grown to love.

This was really helpful, thanks Jason! Also, I see (or, hear) your point Chris. I’m actually doing the same with my Two Notes LeClean and CAB M+. I’m using the FX loop L send for sending instrument level signal to my gain stages and preamp, and getting back to the stomp using R return on line level, adding the stereo (post) FX to “torpedoed” signal. This approach takes two blocks (send L, ret R) but IMO is worth the cost, especially with more blocks available nowadays.

Great videos and super helpful information! Thank you for making them! I have a question and maybe a video idea. Wondering if it's possible to link the POD GO with the HX Stomp in a 4 cable method while still having the ability to put some of the effects from each pedal in front of the amp as well as the FX Loop. For example, Say you wanted the Teemah from the POD GO to hit the front of your amp and a Delay from the GO in the loop while using an EQ from the Stomp in the front and a reverb from the Stomp in the loop. Is that possible? Thank you in advance for helping me out! :-)

It wouldn't be much different than this video. You can place pedals anywhere on those 4 cables. It really depends on where you personally want to place your pedals... Example: you want to place a wah before the HX Stomp, a Small Clone between the HX Stomp send and the amp input, an Eventide Timefactor between the amp FX send and the HX stomp return, and a Strymon BigSky between the HX output and the amp FX return. Again it depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Have fun experimenting!

@@gregypooh I mean additional PHYSICAL pedals. I have a Medusa chorus pedal I want to use as well as a Vapor Trail delay. Your video is great, but is restricted to pedals internal to the Stomp/Helix. Line 6 talks about integration with your pedal board but does a terrible job at explaining it. Physical pedals that go in front of your amp are pretty easy to deal with, but when you get into pedals that would ordinarily go into an effects loop, things get more complicated. For instance you need an Insert cable to split the signal. How do you hook it up? Then, how do you program the Stomp to accommodate that new signal path. So that's what I was suggesting a video for... basically do Line 6's job for them....I've got it figured out, but getting there was super painful and totally avoidable if Line 6 just finished the job.

I came up with a different way to use the HX with the 4 Cable Method, but without using up a Send/Return > Mono > FX Loop block. I use the L/Mono Input and Right Input along with the L/Mono Output and Right Output. Route the L/Mono Input to Path A of the Split (full left) and the L/Mono Output to your amp's Input. In that path you can add compression, gain, pitch, etc. (pre-gain) type effects. (make sure to use Split Y) Route the Right Input to Path B of the Split (full right). Hook up the Right Input to your amp's Effects Send and the Right Output to your amps Effects Return. In that path you can add your delays, chorus, reverbs, etc. (post-gain) type effects. I haven't found a place where I need to switch between my amp's current channel to a built-in HX Stomp preamp, so this works great for me. I also have setup patches where I route everything to Path B of the Split, completely bypassing the amps preamp and I add in a HX Preamp near the start of the signal chain and then route other effects accordingly. I'll post a video of the process over the next few days. ~JF
