Lindsay Lohan - Child star taking control on her terms

Lindsay Lohan is a millennial darling, well kind of, depending on who you ask and when you asked. Back in the late 90's and early 2000's she was beloved and made movie after movie, released album after album and was basically inescapable in magazines. But after Mean Girls and her sky-rocket to international fame , people stopped seeing her as a child and treated her like an adult, in the grossest ways. She's stumbled many times along the way to have "her comeback" including Oprah getting involved in 2014 to create a "documentary" about her recovery...when Lindsay was just out of rehab... But Lindsay is back now, and not falling prey to others wishes any longer

This was a very hard one to cut down and it's still nearly an hour, I went into more detail on some of her stumbles in her attempted comebacks but honestly, the more important thing was about recognising the issues at play in her life and focusing on the fact she's feeling in control and like she's doing things for herself now. Do I recommend the Oprah documentary? No, but if you want to spend 6.5 hours of your time on it, I can't stop you. Reminder - we're talking about a person here, there's no need for name calling, slut shaming or anything like that 🤍🤍

The fact that so many people believed she was a twin in Parent Trap showed how talented she was at a young age. As a millennial who loved Freaky Friday before the phenomenon that was Mean Girls, I’m really rooting for her and hope she gets some good roles soon! Though Netflix originals are hit or miss, unless a good director is involved… 🤨

The way organised media pushes all these young people to the absolute brim and then goes "ha ha what a train wreck" is absolutely disgusting. There should be some liability there. Instead it just keeps going on. I don't consume any of that, especially not our UK tabloids which may just be the most disgusting of them all. It was so great to watch you present her experience in a respectful empathetic way. ❤

Man, that whole ere in which Lindsey was at her peak of popularity was sooooo toxic for pretty much any woman in the spotlight, it's honestly a miracle she came out of it with any level of control over her life. What she said about always feeling like the adult child really felt sooo much like how my best friend describes her childhood even though the circumstances are very different. My friend is the oldest of 10, and after her 3rd or 4th siblings came around her parents became pretty hands-off about raising them, leaving the bulk of the work up to the oldest kids. She was always expected to either stay home her entire life to basically be a unwilling parent or get a church-approved career while also staying home so she could help financially support them. Thankfully she did neither, but the effects of never really having a proper childhood will be there the rest of her life. I had no idea that she'd been put into solitary for that long, that's so cruel. Coincidently, John Oliver's show just did an episode last night on the inhumanity of solitary confinement, which I really recommend you go watch. Even shorter stints like Lindsey's can leave a scar on your mental health for the rest of your life. Also, the majority of people in solitary aren't actually violent offenders or inmates who are actually dangerous, more often than not they're tossed in solitary for minor offences or simply bc they pissed off the wrong guard.

It truly was a terrible time back then! Your poor friend, I really feel for them, I hope they've been able to get the support they need to feel okay because that's really going to impact them. I'm very much against solitary confinement, it's just cruelty. I haven't seen that episode yet (he blocks the show outside of the US for 3 weeks after airing so I'm sure it'll show up for us to be able to watch soon). I really like Last week tonight, good level of informative and effective trolling!

@Bryony Claire is that the full episodes they delay? I know they post the main segment on KZread, if it's also blocked in ur region a VPN should do the trick. If not, still check it out when u can, it's very informative and of course easier to digest with a dose of humor. I was most surprised to find out that solitary started with the quakers of all people. I guess they thought quiet contemplation would help inmates basically become monks? A very pacifist approach but with usually violent results when people just went literally insane instead.

That's just what we do to child stars, especially women. It's largely the fault of the media for how they portray the situation, though the public at large isn't without blame because we know what happens to child performers but keep letting rich assholes use them in television and movies. We need to abolish capitalism and celebrity culture.

You mentioning Amy Winehouse reminded me. She died not long before I started 10th grade (I was 15, due to turn 16 that school year for context for all non-Americans) and I was in the school newspaper and I had like a little music column. So for the first issue of the school year I decided to do an article about Amy Winehouse in which I mentioned that, due to how old she was when she died, she joined the “27 club” (a group of people famous in the entertainment industry who all died at 27 years old). I was at lunch fairly early in the school year and mentioned my plans to do this and this one girl who was at my table started going off about how she was an addict wh*re who didn’t deserve to have her name listed next to Kurt Cobain or Jim Morrison or Jimi Hendrix or Janis Joplin which was… an experience and one I still think about. I’ve never even been a fan of her music career but that girl’s reaction threw me off even then when I was less socially aware of the implications of talking about other women like that. That was of course the early 2010s since she died in 2011 but I think it really goes with what you’re talking about- the time period being a big one for tearing down women- so I thought I’d mention it.

@@BryonyClaire Exactly! It was tough love. I'm not an actress, but I love film and I am somewhat aware that actors have to be punctual and professional so they can be ready for rehearsals. Granted, looking back, Lindsay was a different person and was going through a lot. I can understand why Jane would react that way, though, because, in my experience as a vocal student of the arts in high school going to college, one of the things you learn is that when you show up for a performance, you show up on time. However, if she was only like, 3 mins late, I don't really see how that's a problem. However, if she showed up like 20 mins late, then I can REALLY understand why Jane would call her out. It sounds more like she wasn't trying to be mean to her. It was done out of respect for her. Plus, Jane had her own fair share of family trauma. So, I think she gets it, but she also understands that it doesn't mean excusing unprofessional behavior

Great video! I'm just a tiny bit too old to have watched a lot of her movies, but of course I picked up on a lot of the media coverage. I'd like to hear what you think about now vs 10-15-20 years ago - are young girls and women treated any better in media, on talk shows etc, or is it still much of the same? I feel like there's a relatively wide understanding now about how we treated female celebrities wrong in the past, but it's harder for many to see what do wrong here and now. As for this series, I love it and will keep watching it no matter who you pick, it's interesting watching videos both about people I know quite a lot about, and people I don't know much about. I would vote for Alicia Silverstone next, as she was my first teenage idol with Clueless, yet I don't know a whole lot about her.

Thanks! The coverage of girls/women in the tabloids is very much the same (I mean look at Kate Middleton vs Meghan Markle as a key example of "good woman vs 'bad'"). But in terms of our own discourse, it's gotten a lot more nuanced, I'd say. For example, if someone was behaving like Lindsay did in 2007 now, people would call out the behaviour but also be wanting the support to be there for her - though not everyone would be. In some ways I think we've gotten better, like we're much better about not slut shaming, issues around consent, age gap relationships but in other ways we're not. Like, Billie Eilish with her relatively old boyfriend who she was a huge fan of when she was a kid, people started calling HER out for being a bad influence on her fans when it's actually about him being the issue, the power dynamic problem there and issues with age gap relationships - so we've gotten better in some ways but definitely not all

I'm not famous but though I can relate to her because I also grew up with emotional instability. She helped me a lot through my very hard times when I went through (cyber)bullying as well, especially because I didn't hide Lindsay anymore and that made so called friends reject me because "OMG how can you support people in your twenties, fangirls are a mental case. But well so are you." I realized how toxic my environment was and started to transform from 2009, met my bf, went to therapy and rehab as well. Just wanted to chime in I agree something must've been going on (not to get too "woo-woo" on ya), because my Gaia it was certainly one of my worst years (teenage years and early adulthood were all pretty collectively awful so its hard to say when the "worst" was) also. Literally grew up watching Lindsay Lohan: she's two months younger than me. It always hurt seeing the way she got treated. But because of the way media depicted her of course my peers and I snap judged Lindsay when nattering about clickbait articles while pre-gaming in college. Meanwhile we were doing some of the same things but had the privilege of anonymity. I was so sad when she'd disappear from tabloids for a minute just to have paparazzi zoom lens shots with trash headlines pop up. When she started showing up again in a way that seemed like she was in control of it was a great thing to see. I love her Christmas movie she made for Netflix. The character starts as exactly the clueless spoiled brat she was painted as when we were younger but is put in a situation where she gets to grow and embrace life with people who genuinely care. It's exactly what you expect from a holiday romance but that's not a bad thing. Netflix movies are a great way for Lindsay to reboot her acting career: she gets to be creative without fully re-entering the Hollyweird meat grinder, the actors likely have more creative license vs something produced by a larger studio, the production process may be less grueling, and she doesn't have to do huge publicity for it like your standard summer blockbuster. Netflix seems to be doing right by Vanessa Hudgens and some other 2000's actors looking for soft comebacks so hopefully Lindsay is happy to be under contract with them.

I think this really shows how gigantic the "interest" in her was if even someone like me couldn't escape it. I grew up loving "Mean girls" and it's interesting how my view on it shifted now that I'm older and a feminist. I still somehow love the movie but more from a critiqual perspective now. Having watched the audio commentary for the movie with Tina Fey, I have to say I really lost a lot of respect for Tina Fey. They were constantly mocking and femme-shaming Lindsay even there because she likes her hair styled and it went deep into nlog-terrytory. Generally, the more I learn about Tina Fey and her "sense of humor" the less I like her. Instead I have huge respect now for women like Lindsay and Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. As for video topic suggestions, I would love it if maybe you would make videos like this one about these two and also Taylor Swift! And maybe a kind of "unpacking" type of video about Tina Fey and her, well, "humor". Also, Justin Timberlake could be interesting as he was responsible for a lot that both Britney and Janet Jackson went through. It's relieving and refreshing to see how you approach women like Lindsay with so much kindness and respect without letting that take away from some neccessary critisism that sometimes has to be made. (Also, on an off-topic note, I want to say that I really appreciate your lovely make-up you always wear! As someone who isn't really good with this I assume that's a lot of work and effort and you're amazingly good with colours!)

Lindsey shouldn't had done the oprah reality show it definitely didn't help her just like the judds the late singer/actress naomi judd regretted doing it because after shooting her and wynonna stopped speaking to each other for a long time

Lindsay credits the show for a lot but honestly, I kind of think she has to because of the sheer power and influence Oprah has. It was so clear during the show and after that she wasn't happy and felt incredibly pressured but keeps deflecting saying that "it helped her get on track"

Mila Tequila has a video on her already which I think covers things well for now until Amanda can come out saying more herself. The reason I wait to do these kinds of videos is for the people themselves to speak, I build things from their interviews/books etc. and for now, Amanda isn't able to have much of a voice but hopefully after what Britney has revealed from her experience, that will change

Lindsay is such a mess. Just a few months ago I saw a video of her on Tiktok getting slapped by a woman in a burka after Lindsay tried to kidnap her little boy 🙈 I think her drug addiction made her dabble in human trafficking as well as yachting (which if you don't know what that is... it is high class prostitution). There is a lot of stuff on the internet pointing at that, you just need to know where to look. I still have the picture of her in my head playing the twins from the Parent Trap and it is just heartbreaking to see what she has turned into. Hollywood is sick and cruel.

What's Your Opinion On Drew Barrymore Being A Scab?? Like Her Scabbing By Continuing Her Show That Had Employed Union Writers Since The Shows Genesis *_While WGA Was STILL Striking;_* & _All Only 4.5 Months After_ She Had Done This Whole Performative Asss, Virtue-Signaling *_"Sign Of Solidarity"/False Show Of Support For The WGA Writers_* That Were On Strike In Claiming She Had _Specifically_ *Opted Out Of/Stepped Down From Hosting The* *_MTV Movie & TV Awards_* As A Way Of *_"Standing With Her WGA Writers"._* Only To Then Do A Full 180-Hiring Scab Workers/Crossing The Picket Line That Was Made Up Of *_Her OWN Writers._* Wildly Enough; _She Isn't The First_ In Her Family's Century-Long Legacy In The Acting Business _To Undermine Union Efforts,_ According To This Article I Dug Up; "Drew's great aunt Ethel Barrymore had been a theater actor and was very involved with the union Actors' Equity, which represented stage actors. She went on strike against Broadway producers in 1919. But 10 years later, Schulman says, when the head of Actors' Equity tried to organize Hollywood actors, Ethel Barrymore singlehandedly undermined that effort. Barrymore, who by that time had become the vice president of Equity, "suddenly released a statement saying ... that it was her understanding that Equity and the studios had come to a settlement and it was over." Schulman says her statement broke the solidarity between the stage actors and movie actors, and the unionization attempt failed. "It was a pretty poor thing for Miss Barrymore to do." Here's a story I learned while researching "Oscar Wars" about how Drew Barrymore's great aunt, Ethel Barrymore, was pivotal in blocking a Hollywood labor action exactly 94 years ago, and the HUGE consequences it had. Ready?" Schulman says the president of Equity, Frank Gilmore, was caught off guard, and in a statement, called Barrymore's move "regrettable." Union members were reportedly furious, too. "One of the actors said 'If Miss Barrymore could not say anything beneficial for us, the least she could have done would have been to keep still,'" Schulman says. "It also came out that Ethel Barrymore had met with the producers Irving Thalberg and Jack Warner in a dressing room, and that she had taken a role in a Warner Brothers film. So there was just all this outcry that Ethel had basically parachuted in and derailed this whole effort." Schulman explains that while the effort to unionize movie actors in Equity failed, later that year, 45 of them banded together to create the Screen Actors Guild. That union later merged with AFTRA, and SAG-AFTRA is the union that Drew Barrymore is a member of today and that is on strike. The lesson of both Barrymore sagas, says Schulman, is "if you don't have solidarity and present a united front, things can really get derailed fast." Any Thoughts?

I feel like this video is unfinished.. you didn't go through how weird she was in her islam phase. She look so strange wanting to be an activist and working for the turkish government apparently to "help people" and then trying to kidnap a child on the street who have parents (not orphan) .. maybe i word it wrong, but if you do research on this you'll find it. And honestly it was this phase that made me not like her anymore. She just seemed so drugged up, strange, wanting to be a hero or wanting attention.. idk its just super weird.

On one hand, i do feel some sympathy for her on the grounds that her family is the absolute worst and the paparazzi are scum suckers of the lowest order. On the other, my sympathy is limited by her actions and treatment of other people. Also... she really isn't THAT great an actress. She was decent as a kid and could've definitely become better as an adult if she'd really worked at it, but she really didn't have anything close to that insane level of "natural talent" the initial hype made her out to be .
