The noise that Davenport’s racquet made when she struck the ball was the most phenomenal thing for me about her game, just listen to her racquet noise against Venus in Wimbledon final, absolutely phenomenal.

always known as the cleanest ball striker. The only time I've heard something similar was Kvitova vs Sharapova Wimbledon 2011

I remember watching Lindsay as 16-year-old when she was climbing up the WTA rankings.............and being very impressed at her powerful game, and I knew she would be a Grand Slam champion.

I love how Lindsay is so appreciative and considerate towards the players. Not always the case with former players. Mitch Michals was not bad either.

I completely agree….

This is the first season in over a decade I've really felt a sense of actual depth in the WTA rather than the dominance of one player, two or three others who can consistenly contend, and the rest of the field. Swiatek, Sabalenka/Rybakina/Krejcikova/Pegula (playing the best tennis of their careers), and Jabeur are all showing me the consistency and high level of play that was missing for years for that many players. Then think of the likes of Haddad Maia, Bencic and a couple more of the top 25 players as hovering just below. Give Gauff a couple of years as she's still a teen. Of course, if Osaka comes back full strenght and invested, it's even better.

really like Lindsay’s empathy for today’s players. That is not always the case, especially with ex male professionals. i totally, totally agree with her on Madison and Iga. It **is disconcerting to observe a very talented grand slam champion be so heavily reliant upon her team and beseech their help. Players like her and Serena took complete responsibility for what ^they were doing on the court ....

Lindsay is absolutely a legend. Great player, great commentator, bringing up a possible pro son ... heck, I say induct her to the HOF a second time in the Contributor category.

If it wasn't for the William sisters especially Venus Lindsay Davenport would of won more Grand Slams. She lost all four of her Grand Slam finals to the William sisters 3 of them to Venus.

Great point about the serve in the women's game. There's still so many players who have flat, ineffective and inconsistent serves. Makes watching matches a bit of a drag with so many lets, faults, double faults, and so few servi e winners. I wish they'd play on when there's a let instead of serving again. The doubles final today had three straight let serves on one point, then a fault. Four tries at a serve, in a final? I still think Venus should've had a service game as good or nearly so as Serena's, but that certainly never happened.

Lindsay could still be top 10 at 47.

Yeah, because Pliskova is? Oh, wait much younger Pliskova is not in top-10, she's №23 now. The point here is that it's extremely hard to imagine either of these ladies with the footwork they've had during their respective careers to succeed in current WTA tour on current higher bouncing surfaces. You have to be able to move. That's the rule, at least for now. As much as we all love Lindsey as a player AND as a person, she and the likes of her will be unlikely to be seen in the top-10, at least until the era of immovable champions comes back.

​@@freshname Lindsay has a very economical way of playing in that she doesn't really need explosive movement. She just needs 1 or 2 balls to do enough damage to be on the offensive. Not unlike Ostapenko currently, who is winning tournaments.

​@@EW-vz3ijShe made a comeback at the age of 32 and failed miserably, what makes u think at the age of 47 she can be in the top 10? Even Venus these days are horrible and she's only 43 and Venus at the age of 43 can move way better than Davenport in her 20s. Davenport was great for her time because the women at the time weren't used to power shots and the women weren't nearly as athletic as it is today. So even though she was one of the slowest top players to ever exist, it doesn't matter because her power can intimidate everybody and her power can outrun everybody. I highly doubt her power can do the same damage in the 2010s. You need to back it up with a great defensive game as well. Just look at the difference between Venus & Serena in the 2010s. Venus strategy was always to hit the ball flat and finish the point ASAP, because she knew she couldn't outrun the other girls in the 2010s. Since she hit most balls flat and many of these girls are used to hit powerful shots, they have no problem handling her shots & Venus hit a lot of errors with few winners. Serena's strategy was to hit hard with more spin because her speed can match the other girls even at that age. If Davenport comes back now she will move even worse than before, she will be super slow. She will be like Venus, hitting the ball flat and lots of errors. Chances of success for her are close to none.

@@EW-vz3ij If you've seen both Ostapenko and Davenport play, you know that Ostapenko's movement is exceedingly better. She's much shorter, much smaller framed athlete. For her it's much easier to stop herself, recover from the shot and change direction. She's not even like Sabalenka or Rybakina big. I'm not mentioning Lindsey. If your serve and strokes are even as huge as Pliskova or Davenport have had, you still have to move yourself around the cort. There's no way you can afford loosing precious time just trying to stop your big body mass inertia and then throw yourself in different direction. Giving out free time left and right is not an option anymore.

@@secrets.295 that's a very good point, which I completely agree with and hope more people would be able to see that. Also it's worth noticing how much Serena's game changed between early-mid 2000s and 2010. The amount of spin she stared to add to her strokes from 2012 was shocking to me. None of us had seen her spin so much. And tha turned out to be extremely effective. Her shots were still quite heavy and hard too deal with, but she bought herself more time to recover her court position after shots and she drastically reduced her error count. And YES Venus Williams, not being a queen of footwork herself, was a much better mover that always lovely Lindsey used to be.

Lindsay has aged so well. She looks great. Anyway, I am still in love with her fluid and effortless groundstrokes.

He's talking like these previous tennis players are antiquity. Of course, you got great athletes in the WTA right now, but let's not forget that one of these ancient tennis players just retired LAST YEAR and she dominated the tennis circuit for 27 years and also beat the world #2 before she left in 2022.

And it's great to see Lindsay Davenport, she is in my top 3 tennis player.

She just crunched steffi Graf late in each set. I hated the way when she first went to Wimbledon and working on her fitness the commentators would rag on her weight and clumsy. Steffi was vulnerable having spent all of her reserves beating Venus in Sf and winning French the month before. Lindsey packed a wallop with her accentuated follow through.

Lindsay Davenport was okay as long as she did not have to play tennis, She was another John Isner. All she wanted to do was stand up and serve aces all day. When she had to play tennis she lost. As for as the WTA, you do not know the depth because the draws are always RIGGED for a particular player and it is always Pegula. Rybakina was the number 3 player, therefore she should have been in Iga's draw. Pegula at number 4 should have been in Sabalenka's draw. Why would someone swap numbers 2 and 3, unless the intentions are to cheat? Sabalenka, Rybakina and Jabeur's draw was atrocious. They continue to walk Pegula to the Semis every slam. If she wants a Slam, let her earn it like everyone else. This is what has ruined women tennis. The draws continues to be rigged to favor one player and all the good players knock each other out.

@AlexJaneson Assuming that that's what happened, then, absolutely it makes sense that the draw is rigged in her favor (Wimbledon) Of course, there will be a few eyes skimming through the vast tennis social media (including this very thread). Should those eyes (people who have affiliation to the entity that Riggs) reach a strong consensus within public sentiment (i.e. "Pegula super hard RG, we suspicious! WTA hates Pegula! Wimby prolly want Pegula lose also! Racist! We ppl are not stupid) ......THEN we can then expect the opposite situation for USO--JPeg will have an easy draw. Manipulation is a long process. Can't let the general population catch on too quick. So, yeah, better make her draw easy this time. But we all caught up. @Cola7UPS823 Awesome and insightful take. 👍

Not true, she won 3 Grand Slams by out-hitting opponents and being more consistent than them. Her technique and timing were amazing. She overpowered Venus at the 1998 US Open and moved well enough to beat her and Hingis. She also beat Venus in other slam matches over the next 5-6 years. Venus beat her in the finals.

Jabeur is lacking clarity, to me she is trying to be too cutesy with her shots sometimes which isn’t necessary. If she plays smart she would be a champion for sure.
