AWESOME KENNY. First time I have seen this. It brings me way back to better times. Love the banter. Kenny King comes through again! I believe this is from around June of 1981 which is when Linda left her Pirates role as Mabel. In 1982 Linda and the original cast made the movie version which was released in 1983 (Feb). Sadly, Linda's mom Ruthmary Ronstadt passed away while Linda was away filming the movie which was a difficult time for her to be gone. Ironically this particular genre was a favorite of Linda's mom and no doubt was an influence on her taking the role in the first place. Unfortunately life (and death) happens. Her mom was a sweetheart. She no doubt saw this Today Show clip and was thrilled.

From NYT August 21, 1981: "In June, Miss DeVito replaced Linda Ronstadt as Mabel in ''Pirates of Penzance,'' after working as her understudy since January. She got the role despite her unlikely background, the highlight of which was a year on tour as the raucous and raunchy female vocalist with the hard-rock singer Meatloaf and his band. Although Miss DeVito's performance in ''Pirates'' has been favorably received, she will be leaving the show for a tour to promote her first record album, ''Is this a Cool World or What?'' It will be released next month. Maureen McGovern will succeed her as Mabel. Sense of Humor the Main Thing"

Interesting fact is that Karla met her future husband Robby Benson when he replaced Kevin Kline as the Pirate King. For the most part the entire original cast was replaced as they went off to make the movie version.

Rare footage of Linda Ronstadt in her broadway play in nyc for Pirates of Penzance. Linda could sing all types of music. She started in 1973. She had to retire like 6 years ago due to health reasons. 👑🔥👍⭐️⭐️😃

Actually Linda, her brother and sister had a local singing act mid 1960's. She was coaxed by a band member to move to Los Angeles where they put together a band named Stone Poneys with their first album release in January of '67. Their second album release in June of that year yielded a hit single called Different Drum. The group broke up after a third album and Linda went solo with her first album Hand Sown Home Grown released in 1969. And the rest as they say is history. I believe playing this role as where she met her husband, Robby Benson. One of so few celebrity couples with a successful marraige.

The numbers they taped just for this show are priceless. And they got in costume to do it!

Ok. I guess it pays to follow the rules but I think others thought they were too. One poster stopped allowing comments after he was banned and came back under a different name. Not sure why comments would get a poster in trouble. Here is hoping your videos stay on forever as you are doing a great service to our popular and cultural past.
