Lincoln Speaks: Words That Transformed a Nation at the Morgan Library and Museum

Lincoln Speaks, a 15-minute film, was originally produced to accompany the exhibition and features contemporary writers and scholars discussing the power of Lincoln’s language and his enduring legacy in American political life. President Bill Clinton leads a group of distinguished commentators, including Tony Kushner, award-winning playwright and author of the screenplay for the Academy Award-winning Lincoln; Harold Holzer, one of the nation's leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln; Edna Greene Medford, Chair of the History department at Howard University; the prolific novelist Jerome Charyn, author of I am Abraham; and historian Earl Lewis, President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Actor Neil Bradley voiced excerpts from Lincoln’s speeches and letters. This film-which was previously only available in the gallery when the exhibition was on view-includes manuscripts and photographs from The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, The Shapell Manuscript Foundation, and the Morgan Library & Museum.

Growing up in Illinois (land of Lincoln), I have an almost spiritual awe towards Abraham lincoln. Hes another, more real form of messiah/superhero than religion or comic books. Books and newspapers were the internet his time. And if he read the Bible as much as it says here than he got the intended meaning of it. Because many people have used it to support slavery also.

Doing all he did under the circumstances is incredibly impressive. His thoughts, actions, the way he shaped history are revealing of a heroic, bold, honorable figure whose mind could see further than average because when one has a good amount of empathy, compassion, strong moral values, one does not follow the majority's flow if it's wrong, one prioritises the greater good, not individual gain or the benefit of some who think alike. A very intelligent, analytical forward mind.

A number of Lincoln’s contemporaries left accounts of his voice and speaking style. Journalist Horace White described Lincoln as having “a thin tenor, or rather falsetto, voice, almost as high-pitched as a boatswain’s whistle.” Others described it as “shrill” and “sharp,” which the New York Herald noted in February 1860 had “a frequent tendency to dwindle into a shrill and unpleasant sound.” For most listeners, however, the power of Lincoln’s words soon outweighed any discordant note in his delivery.Lincoln’s speaking voice carried the accents and phrases of a youth spent in Kentucky and southern Indiana. The most oft-quoted example is that of Lincoln’s tendency to pronounce “chairman” as “cheerman.” Among the research files of Indiana senator and Lincoln biographer Albert J. Beveridge at the Library of Congress is a list of southern Indiana dialect words prepared in 1924 by a correspondent who, like Lincoln, grew up that part of the state in a family who had lived there for generations. In southern Indiana, “window” became “winder,” according to Charles Remy; “learned” was pronounced “larnt”; and the word “reckon” substituted for “assume.

It was said that he had a high pitched, shrill and piping nasal voice with a heavy Kentucky accent. His speeches always went over better in print than when occurring live. The Gettysburg Address was viciously panned by those who were there, but it became well regarded when its transcript appeared in newspapers.
