Lincoln MKVIII LSC Timing Job... or nightmare? 4.6 4V Ford Modular V8 From Lucore Automotive

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We love our customers, and we love being trust to take care of their valued and valuable rides unfortunately due to scheduling we aren't always available to handle things when needed. In this case our customer was hearing what sounded like a sloppy timing chain from the front of his Lincoln MKVIII and needed to get the setup replaced, with our already busy schedule being packed full we both agreed it was something that a Ford Dealership could handle. So off to the dealership Craig went with his MKVIII LSC with a complete brand new timing set in hand.
Unfortunately this is where things get a little odd and awkward. After a week of sitting at the dealership to be worked on the car was finally pulled in and the work begun. A few hours later our customer received a phone call letting him know the 4.6 4V Ford motor had "massive amounts of metal in the oil pan" and he "needed a new motor". Not expecting this kind of phone call for a vehicle he drove to the dealership our customer reached out to us so we could give a second opinion on the matter.
The situation when we arrived was, odd, to say the least. The accessories had been removed from the motor as had the battery and probably half of the front cover disassembly process completed. The valve covers were removed. What was quoted as an "8 hour job" was very obviously no where near completed. The details at this point aren't something we want to go over but the decision was made to tow the vehicle from that ford dealership to our shop so we could do the job ourselves.
So, we start with a very well maintained Lincoln Super Coupe, in need of a timing chain replacement that was driven before servicing started. Full honesty, these are cars MOST dealerships certainly don't see anymore. The technology was pretty cutting edge for 1995 and only available in a select few cars. The 1995 Lincoln MKVIII, the Mustang Cobra, and that's about it. The timing job is considerably more complicated than a 4.6 2V modular V8. Also, at 25+ years old, how many techs in a dealership were even around when these things were new? Not many.
This story is complicated and we fully admit that is the case. We don't know exactly what we are getting ourselves into here and in all honesty will be learning and discovering the situation as we pick up where the dealership technician left off.
Lucore Automotive is a small independent american small business located just outside Columbus Ohio. While we are a full service shop that maintains and repairs countless daily drivers we are also well known for our work on classics, race cars, and collector cars.
We would like to thank all of our friends, fans, follower, supporters, subscribers, and most importantly customers for being here with us! Without the wonderful people who let us work on their toys, and help their dreams come true we wouldn't be in business.

The other shop just didn't want to do the timing job, then lied and said the customer had a blown motor wow that's bad!!

There's all sorts of bad in this whole situation for sure. Hard to really nail down facts but... none of it's good. As you can see from our channel though we certainly aren't scared of a bit of complicated or hard work!

We appreciate the sentiment! Unfortunately in our industry it's certainly hard to maintain an honest trustworthy reputation, that's something we fight our best to hold onto every day. We DO have customers from surrounding states send us their vehicles on occasion, soooo... ;)

Same boat here. No mechanics I trust within about 150 miles of my place. Seriously considering trailering my truck over to Ohio (from NW Montana) and just camping out for a few months until they could get it in lol. Big hang up there is the truck that needs fixin is my tow rig...and right now my only rig.

This doesn't end well, I have assisted with setting up the timing on one of these. Very complicated and most people are not patient enough to do this. It was cool how they work.

0kay Batman you've got me on the edge of my seat wanting to get a gander at the broken(?) gear and you put up the...to be continued banner. Will Batman get out of this alive or is the old gear plastic with nubby teeth? Tune in next time and find out...when Batman says "I wish we would have let the "shyster shop" cheat us out of a motor job. Can't wait to see 🤪🙃🤑😡

Being honest this WAS going to be just one long episode but didn't figure people would want to sit through a 30+ minute video. So, made the executive decision to split it in two. According to our viewership statistics I think it was the right call ;) Just you wait there's a whole lot more drama to be divulged in the next video! Stay tuned! ;)

Did one of the tensioners fail and allow the sloppy chain to take out the crank sprocket? Are the tensioners on the MK VIII’s plastic?

There have been reports of incorrectly machined replacement timing parts. Aside: My friend had a V6 Superchicken. I never accepted the Rube Goldberg solution to the pushrod design. For racing obviously but that's not how I use my vehicles.

I really would like to talk to you guys about my 98 Ford ranger that has the 4.0 in it. I’d like to have around 300 hp that’s reliable as a daily. I’ve watched you all work and I’m impressed. I’ll call Monday and see what I’m able to afford. Thought of a 5.0 out of a explorer or ? Truck already has a 8:8 rear end

We try to show it all, and unfortunately that includes the bad ugly stuff too. Most days it's not just easy oil changes and brake jobs in the shop. A 5.0 in a Ranger can certainly make for a more fun ride, especially one with a little extra work done ;) The 8.8 you have already is perfectly capable

@@LucoreAuto I’ll be in touch. That is for sure. I know builds take time I’m just now getting one finished from a year ago. Just waiting on my import mechanic to have time to install it. It’s a all motor b18c1 and befor I cracked a sleeve it made 235 on motor so I had it sleeved at victory and MSA assembled it just waiting on install it’s been a year but I can work on a v8 myself a lot better and to race I need something I can turn wrenches on at a race if I need to. So that’s why to compete they way I want I have to go back to my roots to muscle. I love my imports but I can’t tune and a carb I can change out jets etc so it only makes sense to

From the first time we posted this car that's been the general opinion of almost everyone, LOVE the car, HATE to work on it. Which we can completely and totally understand! The engineers didn't give us a whole lot of room to maneuver under the hood of these things.
