This interview hits different after Sondheim passed. Words can’t even describe the unfathomable hole he leaves behind in the theatre community and the world. He was so gracious to share that talent with us all. May his memory be a blessing.

Apparently, it's a thing with him and Tick Tick Boom: “Although Whitford portrays Sondheim onscreen, Sondheim voices himself when he leaves a message on Jonathan's voicemail, as he does in the original musical.”

Congratulations. I'd love to get together and talk to you about it, if you have any interest. No pressure. The main thing though, is that it's first-rate work and has a future. And so do you. I absolutely loved watching the movie "Tick, Tick....Boom". It was amazing and fresh and who better to direct a movie about a Broadway legend than Lin Manuel Miranda. Both playwrights, Johnathan Larson and Lin Manuel Miranda (respectively) have revolutionized musical theater. Johnathan Larson was the first person to show the human side of those infected and affected by the AIDS crisis and portrays them not as sad and regretful and giving up on life, but rather hopeful and lively and vibrant. Lin Manuel Miranda has captured both the sorrow at learning a close friend has been diagnosed with AIDS, the devastation for both the person diagnosed and the friend learning this news, and then how to show up for a friend in need of support. Lin Manuel Miranda continues his career of shedding light on the lives of the disenfranchised and overlooked and bringing them to life in a joyful way that can be celebrated.

I think anyone in HS at the time was! Rent became ppl's personalities lol from what I remember of the buzz it got. But I also know that means Lin has been sitting with that show and TTB and Jonathan Larson since forever, these are foundational shows and artists and experiences to him, which is one of the main reason the film is so successful I think, why it's resonating with so many audiences. And he's partnership (mentor/mentee) with Sondheim has been well-documented, something else that parallels Jonathan Larson too. It's crazy to me that we lost Sondheim mere weeks after this debuted and all the attention it's gotten him, that timing seems too surreal, a little cruel. But even more special for Lin probably that he was able to celebrate his other big hero in time.
