Someone asks if platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or mesotherapy is a better non-surgical hair fall treatment
New York hair restoration specialist Amiya Prasad MD reviews this question in this video, explaining the limits and effectiveness of these injection treatments, and a much more effective alternative that uses a PRP combination:
1:20 - Dr. Prasad’s experience in surgical and non-surgical hair loss solutions
1:39 - Dr. Prasad’s success with non-surgical hair loss treatment that has limited the amount of hair transplants he performs
2:14 - What PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is, and how it can help short-term hair growth, but is limited and needs to be repeated every month to three months
3:02 - Mesotherapy is not practiced in the US, but mostly in Europe with vitamin injections
3:50 - Why Dr. Prasad does not believe mesotherapy works because vitamin injections do not help with genetic hair loss caused by hormones
4:30 - Pharmaceutical solutions prescribed to treat hair loss
4:45 - Hair restoration surgery and its limitations
5:00 - How Hair Regeneration works, and how it was developed by Dr. Prasad to thicken hair and stop hair loss
5:33 - Hair Regeneration’s effectiveness in thickening hair after one treatment, and how patients progress are documented
5:54 - How some advanced hair loss cases get a second injection after 18 months to build upon progress
6:06 - How 5 years of data has shown sustainability of Hair Regeneration’s results
6:39 - PRP or mesotherapy does not stop hair loss progression, but Hair Regeneration has proved it can by thickening thinning hair

Hi sangram keshari patel, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment that so far has lasted over 5 years in our original patients treated over 5 years ago, and is still working for them. You don't need repeat injections periodically, or maintenance drugs with Hair Regeneration. PRP injections for hair loss may be needed for life.

Hi Mr Amiya. Thank you for the good information you provide in your chanel. If Minoxidil is not a long turn solution , will it have some good results at least 10 years of period? I have still early progression I still dont use it but I'm currently on rosemary oil (also rosemary water which I spray every day ) and derma rolling and 20 minutes massages per day . Do you think they will have positive results before I decide if I use minoxidil?I choosed dermarolling and rosemary oil after I red a clinical study which show that have same effect like minoxidil and even longer effect. But interested to what are your thoughts on that. Thanks in advance.

Hi Doctor. I'm a 26 year old working woman. I used to have thick hair until I studied medicine(practising intern). In the last 5 years I've lost 1/4th of my hair. I still do. I've been taking biotin. I have Dermatitis, so I use lupizol. After years of taking of biotin and still no end for hair fall and a visibly receded hairline, there's seems to be nothing that helps with the cessation of hair fall. So will a mesotherapy help?.

I am loosing hair also from my back of scalp and the nape of my neck. I am taking prp sessions but since it will only help the top of my scalp. Can you guide me what treatment i can take to regrow hair for the back of my scalp. My doctor diagnosed my hair loss as telogen effluvium which is leading towards pattern hair loss. I have been facing aggressive hair loss since 6 months. Although prp has helped me to reduce the hair loss, still i am concerned about the area on the back of my scalp from where i have lost almost half of my hair. I have overall thinning on my scalp. I am very much worried as my thickness has reduced considerably in the last few months. Can u suggest a treatment for the backside of scalp where i am unable to take prp injections

Hi Mijanur Rahman, The TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment has to be done in our offices in the US. Since it is a non-surgical treatment with little to no recovery time, and in many cases no additional treatment, you don't need an extended stay in the US. Many patients actually get back on the plane home the same day as treatment, but I don't recommend this for everyone as it is dependent on general health condition and age. Some patients with advanced hair loss may get a second treatment 15-24 months after the first, and results for international patients are monitored through Skype, FaceTime, or email follow up.

Hi 4 AM Pizza, DHT-blockers do need to be used on a daily basis, which would make injecting them like in mesotherapy impractical. I don't prescribe topical DHT-blockers as DHT is in the bloodstream, not just in the scalp, so blocking DHT systemically with oral medication is what I prescribe. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Good morning, Doctor! Here in Europe, they are using a combination treatment, which consists of PRP, mesotherapy, and injectable dutasteride in the scalp, all in a few sessions. Do you think this type of treatment is viable? The purpose is to create more capillary density in hair that is already in the miniturization phase and restore more volume. Greetings and best wishes!

Hi Pipoca Doce, Mesotherapy is not practiced in the US, but as vitamin injections, it's important to note that pattern hair loss is due to genetics, not nutrition. Effects of PRP as a hair loss treatment are not long-term, so it needs to be done regularly. DHT-blockers like finasteride are meant to be taken regularly to continually block DHT, so even if it is effective, you'll have to keep on doing it. In comparison, our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment only requires 1-2 treatment sessions, with benefits lasting 3-5 years, or more. Our male patients with high DHT-sensitivity are prescribed a DHT-blocker like finasteride to be taken daily. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi, Scalp injections only work on native hair that is present and thinning, and for hair follicles that are currently not growing, but still viable. Hi Nicole Lloyd, I need some clarification on your question - what kind of hair restoration did you receive? And what PRP combination are you referring to? I can answer the best I can - Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination that uses ACell's extracellular matrix as the main ingredient, and PRP as the activator. It works for androgenic alopecia, or female pattern hair loss with an over 99% success rate. I hope this helps you, but please feel free to ask again while providing more details about your situation.

Hi Mohammad Eskandari, Mesotherapy is not practiced in the US, but using a less precise needling device is not something I would do soon after a transplant. Hi@@mohammadeskandari749, Finasteride is primarily for slowing thinning of native hair that was not transplanted. Transplanted hair is ideally grafted from the permanent zone where hair is genetically resistant to hair thinning. However, FUEs often harvest hair outside the permanent zone which are prone to thinning, so finasteride can slow the thinning of these hairs as well. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Imrran Shayekh, Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment for most patients, and can last up to 5 years and beyond, depending on the aggressiveness of the hair loss pattern. A DHT-blocker like finasteride is still needed with the treatment, especially for younger men. The cost of the Hair Regeneration varies with the extent of treatment needed. However, at it’s full cost, it’s priced at about half of a single FUT hair transplant, or about a third of an FUE transplant performed in the US. The treatment has to be done in our offices in the US. Since it is a non-surgical treatment with little to no recovery time, and in many cases no additional treatment, you don't need an extended stay in the US. As for PRP injections alone for hair loss, I do not offer this treatment in my practice, but my patients have told me that some of their former doctors do not use anesthetic when doing the procedure, so it can hurt. It is best to ask the doctors you are considering for doing PRP scalp treatment. As for PCOS, we have a lot of experience with PCOS patients. Hormonal management is very important to avoid interference with the progression of the Hair Regeneration treatment. Currently I'm using topical Finasteride, Progesterone, and Minoxidil on my hair. But I have a receding hairline and I don't want a hair transplant. I'm a Norwood 3v.Currently in my forties. Is it even possible for PRP to grow some of my hairline back. I'm getting terminal hair regrowth from Progesterone, but not very much (twenty or so hairs on hairline).

Hi Captain Kirk, It all depends if your hair follicles at your hairline are still viable. PRP can stimulate short-term hair growth, while Hair Regeneration can thicken hair for the long-term, but the hair follicles need to still be alive. If the hair follicles are dead, then a hair transplant is the only option to improve the frontal hairline. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Birajit Kumar Biswas, Hair loss is caused by genetics, not nutrition, so no vitamin can prevent it. Vitamin D and Vitamin B (biotin) help with hair health and growth, but they will not prevent hair loss. Finasteride can slow hair thinning, but this is a drug, not a vitamin. You can also look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video to thicken thinning hair and stimulate hair growth. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Saad Ayouj, The video describes the limitations of PRP alone, which will be needed indefinitely; and mesotherapy, as vitamin injections are not practiced in the US, and pattern hair loss is a genetic issue, not a nutritional one. Genetic pattern hair loss is a genetic issue, so a more effective approach would be slowing hair thinning with a DHT-blocker, stimulating hair growth. and thickening thinning hair without endless scalp injections. I can't recommend a hair transplant as I don't know your age, and hair transplants are not advisable for men in their 20s. Hi faiyazshaikh123, There is no cure for androgenetic alopecia, but we can reverse hair thinning so thinning hair grows thicker for several years with the treatment. Taking medications such as finasteride after the Hair Regeneration treatment depends on your DHT sensitivity. Many men who thinned in their 40s or later don't need to take finasteride after the Hair Regeneration treatment because they are not very DHT sensitive. However, many men who thinned in their 20s are highly DHT sensitive, and can benefit from taking finasteride after the Hair Regeneration treatment. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi aztonmartine, Hair Regeneration is not PRP alone as PRP requires regular treatment sessions. Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment which lasts at least 3-5 years, although the first patients from over 5 years ago still haven’t experienced hair thinning again. Only time will tell how long the treatment really lasts. No maintenance drugs or repeat sessions are done with Hair Regeneration, although very few patients with advanced hair loss may get a second injection in the second year to build on results. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi AGRONOMOUS Titas, We don't currently offer the treatment in India, but we do have many Indian patients coming to the US for treatment. Hi Sam G-Unit, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, the number of sessions needed does vary, and the longevity of results is unpredictable. TrichoStem Hair Regeneration is a PRP combination treatment where PRP is the activator of the main ingredient extracellular matrix by ACell. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration is a one-time treatment for most patients, and can last up to 5 years and beyond, depending on the aggressiveness of the hair loss pattern. You don't need repeat injections periodically, and many older TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration patients don’t use maintenance drugs like finasteride, but finasteride is a must for our younger male patients with very early and aggressive hair loss due to high DHT-sensitivity as TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration™ is not a DHT-blocker. PRP injections for hair loss are needed indefinitely. Some TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients with advanced hair loss get a second treatment 15-24 months after the first which we call the booster, but this is already included in the cost of the treatment plan, so you don’t pay extra for it. TrichoStem™ Hair Regeneration patients can stop using minoxidil completely, or be weaned off it to prevent a sudden hair shed. Hi rajib roy, Extracellular matrix by Acell is the main ingredient of Hair Regeneration, so it is absolutely necessary. PRP is only the activator. If you use PRP alone for hair loss, you only get short-term hair growth. Hair Regeneration works as a wound healing response where dormant hair follicles become active again when adult stem cells become active in the injection area, and make dormant hair follicles active again - this is the process that makes hairs growing thinner shed, and grow back thicker. I hope this clarifies things for you.

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

    @AmiyaPrasadMD

I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, PRP is natural because it comes from your own blood. Extracellular matrix is a wound healing material primarily used by the US military. In addition to being the main ingredient in Hair Regeneration, I’ve been using it for years for advanced surgical healing. It is derived from porcine bladder which has remarkable regenerative properties. The application of extracellular matrix into the scalp spurs a wound healing response in affected hair follicles. The hair follicle which was inactive or growing thinner hairs restarts a healthy growth cycle, so hair that was growing progressively thinner sheds, and grows thicker hair in its place. This basically stops and reverses the hair thinning cycle that causes hair loss. I hope the explanation helps you.

Hi Abhishek Pratap Singh, I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. Also, the number of sessions needed does vary, and the longevity of results is unpredictable. PRP injections for hair loss may be needed for life. Your first step you can do right now is take finasteride to slow your hair thinning and stabilize your hair loss, and you can consider a treatment like Hair Regeneration to stimulate hair growth and thicken thinning hair. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Parul Roy, There is no 100% solution for hair loss because we can't cure smooth-baldness where the hair follicles are already dead. However, if the hair follicles are still viable, we can thicken thinning hair, thereby stopping and reversing hair thinning, which is stopping and reversing the hair loss process. We still can't bring back hair follicles from the dead, and that is holding back a hair loss cure. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Mesotherapy can involve different cocktails injected to the scalp, and it is not practiced widely in the US. I would have to do a physical exam of your scalp to tell how it was affected. Hi Vikram Singh, It's not clear if your hair loss became worse because of temporary shedding due to the stress on your body from your illnesses, and shedding induced by stopping use of minoxidil. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. Finasteride is for slowing progressive hair thinning due to pattern hair loss by blocking the formation of the hormone DHT. However, if your hair started thinning at over 40-years-old, you aren't that DHT-sensitive. Your description does not indicate thinning hair, which is pattern hair loss. Finasteride is a prescription medication, so you should only be using it if a doctor has confirmed hair thinning, and issued you prescription. You can refer to these videos on the limits of minoxidil, why hair shedding is not pattern hair loss, the factors of pattern hair loss in men, and how we diagnose and treat male pattern hair loss: kzread.info/dash/bejne/papslLqMoLTMnqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y3ZlytxmnbfZY5s.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmSoxsaDpJm1fag.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/dKGr27qMYKebpMo.html

Hi kashini singh dance is my passion, Mesotherapy is not practiced in the US. Since mesotherapy is usually combination of vitamins injected into the head using a device, it is not an effective treatment for pattern hair loss. Pattern hair loss is not an issue with nutrition, but with genetics. The Hair Regeneration treatment we feature can thicken thinning hair due to pattern hair loss, and stimulate hair growth from hair follicles that are still viable but have stopped growing hair, but this is about hair loss management. A permanent solution for hair loss implies a cure for hair loss, but there is no cure for genetic pattern hair loss that is hardwired into a person's DNA. I hope this clarifies things for you.

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

Hi johnrobert1993ify, It depends on how long the smooth baldness has been around. Generally, if an area is smooth-bald for over five years, the hair follicles are likely dead, and are no longer viable. If the area has been smooth-bald for less than five years, there is a chance they are dormant. It's hard to differentiate dormant from dead hair follicles in a microscopic exam as they appear the same, as the exam is more for seeing thinning hair that can still be thickened. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Yashesh Bhansali, Sorry to hear about your problem. It's not clear if you have chronic telogen effluvium, so I suggest you see a local dermatologist for a proper examination before treatment can be recommended, if it's even needed. Telogen effluvium usually doesn't require medical treatment. It is also possible to have concurrent pattern hair loss, although hair thinning is progressive over time, not quickly. The genes for pattern hair loss can come from several generations from both sides of your family, so it is possible that you have them from a family member you’ve never even met. An examination is needed to diagnose if you have hair thinning due to pattern hair loss. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi neapolis fa, Sorry to hear about your problem. If your hair loss is diagnosed as due to stress, also called telogen effluvium, the solution is to wait it out. Telogen effluvium is from a severe stress event from a few months ago, but it is best to wait and reduce your stress level in the meantime. Shed hair does grow back. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi Sankalp Mishra, Sorry to hear that, but a physical examination is needed to determine if it's progressive hair thinning, or hair shedding. Finasteride can slow hair thinning, but won't stop it completely. Minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, but it can lose its effects with time, so you can experience more hair shedding. If you want to thicken thinning hai,r, and stimulate growth from hair follicles currently not growing, look into the TrichoStem Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. With this injection treatment, you can stop using minoxidil, but will likely continue with finasteride. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi naresh reddy banala, It is not likely that mesotherapy can make those hairs thicker. If those baby hairs were once thick, they were miniaturized due to pattern hair loss/DHT-sensitivity. Finasteride may slow them from thinning, but if they were once thick, and you want to make them thicker, look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. Hair doesn't become thinner due nutrition, but due to the effects of DHT on the scalp of men who are sensitive to DHT. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi pankaj verma, Baby hair needs clarification as if they were always fine hair (vellus hair) they cannot be thickened. If it was once thicker hair, then PRP alone is not going to thicken it, even with more than 3 sessions. I don’t administer PRP alone for hair loss because it has a limited effect on hair, usually just short-term hair growth. PRP alone is commonly practiced for hair loss, but I don't feel it is effective for long-term hair loss treatment. In fact, many of my Hair Regeneration patients were using PRP alone for hair loss prior to seeing us. They felt they weren't seeing the results they wanted with PRP, and/or couldn't keep up with the schedule of regular shots.

Hi Sarah Eid, Sorry to hear about your problem. It's important to get a proper diagnosis first, as you didn't indicate if your doctor confirmed it was female pattern hair loss. Although 95% of hair loss cases are due to pattern hair loss, there are many causes of hair loss in women, such as stress, post-pregnancy hormonal imbalances, etc. Although the cause of female pattern hair loss is still elusive, we have been able to treat it successfully in over 99% of our patients with the Hair Regeneration treatment of PRP and extracellular matrix by ACell that lasts at least 3-5 years with a single treatment session. This is a stem cell therapy to restart the hair growth cycle so thinning hair grows thicker. Mesotherapy is not practiced in the US, and usually consists of vitamin cocktails that do not treat the genetic cause of hair loss. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi mir hammal, It is not possible to go back to your peak hair count if you ever suffer from hair thinning and hair loss. At your peak in your teen years, you have about 100,000 hairs, but if you experience hair loss, you have already lost 50% of your hair when you first notice it. We can save thinning hair from being lost, and hair transplants can only move about 1500-3000 hairs at a time, so you getting your hair back to your peak really can't be done. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Sir tried a lot to findout whether Hair transplant is a permanent solution or not..

  • @AmiyaPrasadMD

    @AmiyaPrasadMD

Hi SUMAN KUMAR SAHOO, Hair transplant is not a permanent solution because it doesn't stop progressive hair loss, meaning that you will continue to lose hair after a transplant. Transplanted hair is genetically resistant to hair thinning (if taken from the true permanent zone), but these hairs are few so they can't cover all the hair you have lost. You need to stabilize hair loss by taking finasteride to slow down hair thinning, or a treatment like Hair Regeneration to stop hair thinning and reverse it by thickening your existing hair. There are no permanent solutions, but there are treatments to stop hair loss and to save your hair from thinning, which may need more treatment in the future. Hair Regeneration lasts at least 3-5 years, with original patients over 5 years ago still not regressing to state of hair thinning. Finasteride needs to be taken daily to slow hair thinning, but it does not stop it. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Amiya Prasad, M.D. Hi sir, i want to confirm from you about the side effects of finasteride. So many websites says it cause impotency and low sperm count. is it true? doctor prescribed me a week ago but I'm not taking them as I'm really worried about the side effects.

Hi Sour Candy, I have prescribed finasteride to patients for years, and they have not reported sexual side effects. There is a small chance it can happen, but it doesn't happen to all men who take it. There is a small risk involved in taking finasteride. You should also know that finasteride slows down hair thinning, but it doesn't stop it completely. You will have to take it daily for life if you want to slow your hair thinning. If you want an alternative without the side effects, and without the need for maintenance drugs, and one that actually reverses hair thinning, look into the Hair Regeneration treatment featured in the video. I hope this helps you.

Hi Blakeblade1902, It's not clear if you are dealing with male or female pattern hair loss, as there are differences in causes and treatments. Minoxidil, and PRP alone are not long-term treatments for hair loss, as minoxidil does lose effectiveness over time, and you can lose your gains in hair anytime you stop using it. PRP can stimulate short-term hair growth, but you need to keep having treatments. Genetic pattern hair loss is a genetic condition, not a nutritional one, so vitamins don't treat the condition, but they can help with hair health and growth. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Hi@@Blakeblade-zd7tt, Minoxidil won't thicken your hair, or stop hair loss, but it appears to delay the hair shedding cycle, and extends the hair growth cycle so you appear to have more hair on your head. You will have to use it daily to sustain these effects, but these effects can also decrease with time even if you use it daily. Since minoxidil delays the hair shedding cycle, and prolongs the hair growth cycle, if you stop using it, you will likely have a significant hair shed. Finasteride is more beneficial than minoxidil as it can slow down and stabilize hair thinning, and it can be used long-term more predictably. You can refer to these videos about the limits of minoxidil, the importance of finasteride, how we can go beyond finasteride alone in increasing scalp coverage, and why our TrichoStem Hair Regeneration patients don't need to use minoxidil after our treatment: kzread.info/dash/bejne/papslLqMoLTMnqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/mICHpI-tdZPNk9I.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zo2j2bKHgtbcZqw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmmdssZ8lr2Yfso.html
