The only thing they have in common is that they don't want to be alone, so much so that they'd put up with someone they have nothing in common with. I think that's what I find so beautifully, disturbingly accurate about this one. Like, those moments where nothing is said but one of them laughs or maybe makes a noise and the other looks at them as if they had something funny to say, but then they both just sit there in disappointment.

And also, that little phrase at the end, where he says he doesn't understand condiments, I thought was so genius, because it's like Don is equating that with people saying they don't understand relationships, or women, or men. We know these things and understand them, or at least we think we do, and sometimes, in our efforts to pursue them, we prevent ourselves from enjoying them, and it's almost like they become something else entirely simply because of our original misunderstanding.

I think they had a little more in common than just that. They both very awkward, insecure, inexperienced and pretty introvert characters and dues to both having these very similar personality traits was the downfall of them ever properly getting together.

Well this is true, but they also were too guarded to know if they had anything in common and that's the saddest part to me. Anything can happen. We just have to allow ourselves to receive these things.

My favorite Hertzfeldt short, probably due to it's unique status of being the most coherent. It's interesting to see how human he could make these two stick figures be, with such limited animation. I think Don is an excellent animator, and his abstract and simpler work is fantastic, but to me, this is sorely overlooked by a lot of his fans expecting another Billy's Balloon or Rejected.

A lot of people wonder why Don Hertzfeld's stuff is so emotional. I think it's because his work is very reflexive of reality. It's not in the clouds like a romantic comedy, or completely messed up like a horror movie. It's a really interesting combination of the two, just like the "average" life.

This video really expresses how the average human being is extremely self conscious when it comes to everything, and that comes into play the most when it comes to dating. When we're asking someone out or on a date with someone, we are always seeing the situation as the worst possible thing that could be happening and we constantly make tons of blind "What if" assumptions, and thinking of all the horrible thoughts that person could be thinking about us, all of the reasons why that person thinks were being weird, boring, annoying, uninteresting, creepy, self centered, etc. The list goes on and on and our minds are just wired to fear everything when we push ourselves to do these sorts of things and it makes you think about how similar this is to you when you talk to the people you love like this. We need to stop fearing everything and not make assumptions as to what that other person is thinking and just enjoy what you're doing so that you can have fun on your date and start a happy relationship with that person.

If only he called her again. That could have worked out so well. I think what Don Hertzfeldt was trying to get across was how overthink and self doubt can obstruct you from achieving great things and you end up missing out on a great opportunity such as this one. Hertzfeldt’s ability to convey emotions by crafting stories of seemingly ordinary things is what solidifies his place in the animation world. People that want to go into creative writing should learn from this man.

There are so many ways that exchange could’ve gone better if only they could recognise opportunity when it rears its head. It is really grounding to be reminded that so many people don’t have the faith or know-how to seize greater things. Thank you Don, keep up the stellar work, proud of you!

The TV junk at about nine minutes in = hilarious! Just as good as actual broadcast TV. Lily and Jim is my all-time favorite animation. First saw it at a film fest in Ann Arbor, 1997 or '98. Took forever to find this on YT. I've checked every year or two. This was uploaded way back in 2011? Found it only today in 2022. Maybe I was searching for "Jim and Lilly"? Whatever, glad I found this. Anyway, brilliant humor, voice acting. The awkward pauses. Then saying something awkward. Making use of the hand-drawn flicker effect, cranking it up at 10:17. If my luck is good enough today to find Lily and Jim, maybe I can also find that Russian animation about the moose giving rides to a huge load of other creatures.

I totally agree the writing made even their most unlikable moments somehow relatable, but I feel like they're probably not totally unlikable people. I feel like the unlikable-ness stemmed from them not liking themselves. The one part of their conversation that was interesting was when she started talking about stuff she actually knows about and is interested in, IT. She kind of lit up when talking about that. It could have been a launching point for a good conversation, but Jim dropped the ball, on that and pretty much every other bone she threw him.

Dude this one hit close to home, I’ve had more than a few dates like this where they seem cool for a while and then you meet them and you desperately try to find something to connect on solely so you won’t have to keep searching for someone else. I’ve even gone to get coffee even though I hate it! Honestly it’s all part of the process. I figure the girl I’ll marry will come off as a best friend to me pretty early on, and someone I gravitate towards and I won’t have to try to talk to, moreso want to talk to, sometimes you can just tell, but you really won’t realize it until you are with them. So if it’s awkward like this that’s usually it for me now.

This animation was so funny yet so refreshing from how things go on today. People don't talk to each other much because they haven't met each other on the same level of interest and now it's worse because people are able to falsify pictures and information about themselves in order to land an easy bf/gf.

The way he animated body language is REALLY good, which was also thanks to the excellent work of the voice voice actors.

I've watched this so many times, I realize I really relate to Jim. But then it got me thinking, wondering if anyone else felt like Lily in my life before, you really wonder about the things people think and say when you aren't around. At least I do. And then of course that snowballs into more deep thought, wondering what others think, how they feel, why they feel what they do towards you, why you care or if you don't.

This is really meaningfull, i always feared rejection and i always thought about the worst scenario in my head because it is "realistic", but the best thing you can do is just to try to think positively so things can work out, and i learned to not fear rejection because everyone went through worse stuff, so they can probaly get over a "no" just fine and learn that theres more fish in the sea.

delightfully observant and cynical. it is said that an entertainer is someone who can make you laugh at them, while a great entertainer is someone who can make you laugh at yourself. I don't know what someone who makes you feel awkward about yourself is, but we need more of them

I'm misaphonic. I really can't "block out" or "deal with" certain sounds. If I am going to sit through a video with slurping in which 2 people fuck up and nothing really happens, it must be really good. This is probably the only time I will EVER say "thank you" to someone showing me people slurping
