    Soresu was primarily focused on defense and waiting for your opponent to leave themself open to make a strike. Obi-Wan changed from Ataru to Soresu after watching his master get killed because Ataru was too aggressive and left him too vulnerable.

    @@tonyhinojosa7710 that's semi true, it's not that ataru was too aggressive its that ataru is meant to be used with wide open spaces in mind, remember, Ataru is purely an offensive form assisted by force acrobatics. When Gon Jin faces Maul his form was at a disadvantage and cost Jin his life.

    Tomas Rodriguez, and Jedi frowned on purely offensive lightsaber forms because of their aggressiveness because of their tendency to draw their practitioners dangerously close to the dark side if practiced too aggressively with too much passion. The form does put emphasise on defense rather than offense. And it attacks using counters between openings the attacker presents. Also, this form is suitable for long duels as it preserve your stamina and health longer.

  • @thirdstarspiritscholar5763
    @thirdstarspiritscholar57633 жыл бұрын

    Steps to a duel: Never look at your opponent's blade. Never step backwards. You can be easily tricked by watching the attacker's weapon, an experienced opponent will easily defeat you. Watch the torso to gauge movements. Stepping backwards allows you to be overwhelmed by a barrage of attacks, it also leaves you open for low strikes. Step forward or sideways when you parry. Keep a good low stance that allows you to move and May the Force be with You, always.

    Here’s a hot take for you, form 2 and 3 and really the same concept but in different forms, I mean they both are about your opponent making mistakes and trying to outlast them by conserving energy, but form 3 does so by having the opponent attack them and tire themselves out until the slip up, and form 2 is about forcing your opponent to be constantly focused and either blocking or attacking with big motions while you don’t have to work with as much physical energy. The same idea done in different ways

    "In every aspect of combat and in contrast to Form l's sweeping motions, Form III utilized tight, control led movements and a strict economy of action. This was key to the total defense of Soresu, as even the slightest extraneous motion risked leaving an opening for a blaster bolt, vibroblade or lightsaber to slip through. This caution applied not only to Soresu fighters' lightsaber movements, but to their entire body. Form III stances presented a minimal target to assailants, not only limited the opponent's avenues of attack, but reduced the area the Soresu practitioner had to defend with lightsaber parries and blocks"

    While not "true" to Obi Wan's Opening, a truly "defensive" opening stance would be the Japanese "Seigan No Kamae". This stance is often believed to have no openings from the front or side, due to the placement of the weapon, feet, and body weight/angle. Seigan No Kamae would work exceptionally well with the 4-basic "blocks" demonstrated in this video. Considering the blocks in this video require the weapon to be in front of your body, having an opening stance in which the weapon is furthest behind you, with your arm outreached, legs bent, and body weight on your backward foot makes ZERO sense. I like to think of Form III similar to the martial arts form Wing-Chun. Close quarters, minimal movement, focus on defense, using the enemy's movements to your own advantage, and creation of openings. The later adaptations adding offense to Form III (i.e. Form V Djem So) is similar to how Bruce Lee modified Wing Chun into his own unique martial arts style, Jeet Kune Do

    This is not Soresu at all. this is Form 1 defensive (aka real world basics) Soresu is built around momentum. A Soresu master moves the blade more then any other form other then perhaps Juyo. It seems to be the common misconception that the endurance form using tight minimalistic bladework means it hardly moves the saber. This is incorrect. A Form III practitioner at the height of their form keeps the blade in constant motion in a defensive patternt hat covers their body and adjusts to meet the blade of their opponent. While their opponent makes quick decided attacks and thrusts, a Soresu practitioner already has the blade in motion to parry before the other person has time to consider their own attack.This is the endurance form and is called such because moving a lightsaber does not actually require a lot of energy. Light wrist adjustments to re-direct a blades momentum is effortless allowing the wielder to not need the same amount of strength to deflect an attack.

    @@Wand422 This guy's footwork is also terrible. You should never keep your feet so close together, or in a straight line as he does with his Makashi video - gives you an awful center of balance; have fun getting knocked down by an aggressive opponent. His Ataru video is the only one that shows decent footwork; always step back or to the side when dodging/defending - otherwise, plant your feet like a tree, roots apart. I've always been a big fan of forms I and IV (Shii-Cho and Ataru); simple, elegant, efficient, evasive, aggressive, accurate.

It's his 18th later this year. We haven't had a lightsaber battle in years. I'm going to show up, in a jedi robe, with my lightsaber (he was always dark side, I was always light side) And challenge him. He does professional Judo and he’s a big muscley guy, so I think my best bet is defensive 😂 I'm really excited. It's gonna be a LOT of commitment to the bit but it'll be worth it.

Also in real life, everything this kid is doing is wrong and would result in immediate death from anyone with any actual experience handling a blade. He's literally just sliding around with collapsed knees everywhere. No structure. All of his "guards," are held way to close to his body. His wrists look like they're about to start crying at all times. It would be super easy to bind up with him, take his saber and push him over at any point. Its very evident he has never held an actual feder in his life. So he's dedicated to internet bullshit I guess but that isnt really impressive.
