    Mae is not complicated. Episode 3 says everything that needs to be said about both sisters and they’re dynamic. Mae’s entire identity is based around being a twin. One part of a whole. She cannot conceptualize herself as an individual, and that’s why her reaction to Osha leaving was so violent. It meant that she would be alone, which was a direct threat to her sense of identity. Imagine how scary that is for a child that thinks like that? And that didn’t change with time. What Mae wants? Her sister back. That old bond they used to have. And that means Mae’s only loyalty is and will always be to Osha. It’s easy to understand her turn on ep 4 then. Mae will always choose her literal other half. So yeah, Osha being alive DID change everything for her. But the fight against Qimir also changed everything. For the first time in 10 years they were face to face….and Osha chose the Jedi again. She’s not going to let her sister arrest her, of course, so she decides to sever Osha’s connection to the Jedi once and for all……killing Sol and completing her revenge. Also, that was the main reason why Mae was killing. Not for any loyalty or belief in the Sith, but bc it was a means to exact her revenge for everything that she lost. Again, that’s why it was easy for her to turn on Qimir.

    The helmet is made of cortosis. The main ingredient for anti-Jedi armor in the old Republic, especially during the seven major wars between the Army of Light and the Brotherhood of Darkness, led by Lord Hoth and Lord Kaan, respectively. Cortosis shorts out light saber blades but it is lethally difficult to mine. Bane was born in that same mining planet.

    Andor was well-structured as a show (once the first three table-setting episodes are done). Each episode had its own point to make, and still a clear step forward. Of course, Andor was helmed by experienced writing talent but it’s still a LA SW show. Season 1 of Mando, as well, was very clearly episodic with a narrative through-line. Subsequent seasons less so. Book of Boba Fett was a slog at times, buoyed by Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen’s screen presence. It should have been a feature or a three part miniseries. I liked Ahsoka but I enjoy philosophical fare and suspected that was the aesthetic of the show before it premiered. I can understand why others didn’t take to it. Obi-Wan … my hopes were too high but it definitely never shook off its feature film origins.

    So on maes turn: Her motivation for the killings was gone when she found out osha was alive. Her initial plan seemed to be turn herself in, cut a deal while revealing the sith and hopefully live her life with osha. THEN things changed. Instead of being able to turn herself in, she was surrounded by jedi at the scene of another crime. There's a BIG difference between turning yourself in and gaining some goodwill and being taken in at ANOTHER crime scene. Also the biggest one. Her master was there. She knew he was going to kill her so if she let jecki take her she would just be a sitting duck for her master. It became about survival in the moment. Once her master was out the way she tries to reunite woth osha, is rejected which led to osha trying to cuff mae which would again leave her a sitting duck. I think at THIS point its mostly about survival. Taking Oshas clothes and going with Sol is just the quickest easier way away from her master. So it's posisble Jecki is just strong with a blade naturally in ways that really work when fighting life and death and not just theory and training moves. I wish we had more time with her. @rawkmode6315Ай бұрын

    Its cortosis, a rare metal that reflects energy. When he hits their sabers with his bracer or helmet, it temporarily short circuits the weapon. This is also why the stun blast doesn't work. He tosses Osha out of the way instead of killing her because he may want to use her later, since he's seeking an acolyte. The Jedi's combat gets messier and more aggressive as the fight goes on because they are becoming completely unbalanced in the Force by exposure to his fighting style, raw aggression, and death of their friends. By the time Mae is impersonating Osha, its likely that Sol is practically blind in the Force due to his emotional state. I'm going to paste in a comment I made on another channel about what I think is actually happening in the show: The Sith lord of this time period is a guy named Darth Tenebrous. He is interested in the art of manipulating life through the use of the Force. He finds a coven of witches who have a mastered at least part of this skill, so he goes to learn from them (he's actually present in the background of the flashback scene when Mae and Osha are doing their ascension ceremony, but then peaces out when the Jedi show up.) The Jedi realize this or something like it, so they kill everyone in the coven. They do this to prevent the Sith from learning forbidden knowledge from them. Nonetheless, Tenebrous now has some basic information to start, but still doesn't know how to do it, thus he spends the rest of his life trying to unlock the secret. He has two apprentices, an official Sith apprentice named Darth Plagueis, and an illegitimate apprentice named Darth Venamis, although technically Venamis isn't a "Darth," nor a true Sith, since the Rule of Two says there can only be one master and one apprentice. Ultimately, Tenebrous discovers Venamis betraying him and imprisons him in his lab where he uses him in his experiments, literally torturing him to death for decades and reviving him using the techniques he's learning. His apprentice Darth Plagueis eventually kills Tenebrous and takes his own apprentice, Darth Sidious. Together they continue the experimentation, accidentally creating Anakin Skywalker. However, they think all their experiments have failed (Anakin is born on the other side of the galaxy and they are unaware of it until Sidious encounters him in "The Phantom Menace.") Due to their failures, Sidious becomes impatient and kills Plagueis in his sleep, becoming the master, and eventually taking Darth Maul as his apprentice. This is the point at which the prequels begin. Here is the punchline to all of this: Qimir is Darth Venamis and we're seeing the story of his betrayal of his master, Darth Tenebrous. He wants an acolyte to increase his strength in order to kill Tenebrous and replace him.

  • @eds1942
    @eds1942Ай бұрын

    Qimir is a Sith Apprentice who was trying to get his own apprentice in Mae, while also suggesting that he might have a tie to Sol’s past. I’m guessing that his Sith Master was these girl’s father, and that perhaps he (Qimir) himself was present at the coven’s sanctuary 16 years earlier? Because that place couldn’t have been just for them, could it? The Jedi were alerted to go there by someone. And Mae was saved by someone (if we take the flashback as truth) and got off of that world somehow, and met up with Qimir somehow and at some point in time. And he seems to need one of them just as much as he needs to get these Jedi. But he is only listed as being in 3 episodes? My frustration with the show isn’t the plot or the acting, but has to do with the episode release structures and runtimes. And their weekly release isn’t helping with these Star Wars live action shows in general, especially with these season long stories. which they are handling what seems to be movies as if they are a TV series. It’s not Ahsoka or Mandalorian season 3 bad yet (we’ve just past the mid way point), where they only had about an hour or hour and half worth of content, so they tossed in a pointless action scene or had people standing or sitting around slowly having half of a conversation only for things to happen because the plot said so. Or like with BoBF, where they ran out material so they gave two episodes to setup season 3 of the Mandalorian. But yes, it definitely feels as if these shows they are their annual movie that they split up so that they can pass it off as a TV show and skip theater and everything around that.

It was used in armor and Cad Bane had bullets made from it, but rarely used them because they were expensive. The idea was that a Jedi would use their lightsaber to deflect the shot, shorting it out and leaving them open to the next shot.

    I had been really hopeful for this show after Andor, but this episode has proven the showrunner is absolute shite. The fight sequences, particularly Jecki’s, were the definite standout of the show and possibly the series. But they literally killed off a dozen Jedi and no one cared. We needed another 15 minutes in the last episode where we got to spend more time with Jecki and Yord, along with the other Jedi, so their deaths would have impact. This episode also felt incredibly slapstick with the gopher-Ewok and having a Sith Lord literally spinning around in circles trying to detach a flashlight (Darth Vader would never). You guys also talk about those manta-beetles being super deadly but we never saw that. What they actually showed was that the bugs were easily drawn in with light and also easily killed with a lightsaber. If in the prior episode we saw the Jedis hunted down by the bugs, that they were an actual threat, then I would agree with you. Overall this show lacks tension, they learn something harrowing then calmly walk off to a new location. And the boring over the shoulder framing is so disappointing when you see TikToks where they pull off better interactions/dynamics. Does anyone even remember Carrie Ann Moss was in this show?

    Something that's kind of interesting to me watching different reactions and reactors, is that I think one of the disconnects on this show is it delves so much into some deep cuts of star wars lore, that it at times almost feels like it is forcing you to have a more extensive history while at the same time doing things that seem so anti cannon for others. We have really dived into the whole force being manipulated into creating life that has been at times played off with sidious survival and did plagueis birth anakin in a way, and we get force magic with withces where we saw it before in different sects and even games like jedi knight jedi academy. We get cortosis and we get different sabers and colors. We get more of different species being trained with the force. The whole jedi potentially wiping minds and creating false memories like in kotor and kotor 2. It's a LOT and at times can be overdoihg it I think. I also get the feeling qimir is not a sith per se, more like what we get from the knights of ren and there is still someone out there playing at the strings here, the show is really hitting us over the head with ( what is my biggest criticism of the prequel era and thr) the jedi are broken as a group. It's got a ton moving at once and I think that gets a little clunky at times. Mae and Osha are really done well as they are in a lot of ways two parts of a whole, mae is deeply drawn to that need to feel whole with osha, sees the jedi as the enemy soley for taking her away. Osha is the part that wants to be more than the sum of the two, her own life, her own path and I'm going to be interested if they kind of force them here to embrace the others mentality even for a little to try and pass off as being the other

    Cortosis is the metal. It is a metal from Star Wars Legends. I won't explain how or why it does that because they may explain it further. I only gave the name because Disney has this way of reintroducing stuff from Legends without actually explaining stuff. Legends was fun because things were explained and always followed logical progression. Disney just assumes everyone who watches read Legends. Basically, everything this show does is take material from Legends and reintroduce it to Canon. That's the only purpose of the show, to reintroduce Legends continuity in a way that melds with the new Disney Canon. So fun fact, before Disney bought the property there was a story that showed that the Jedi Council was actually aware of the Sith. In fact, the Phantom Menace shows that Yoda is aware of Bane's Order of the Sith Lords. It is the reason why Yoda knows that the Order of the Sith have a master and apprentice. Won't go into all the details in case you ever want to find a copy of that story somehow. Basically, a Sith encounter happens way before Phantom Menace, but the Council of the time just writes it off as a Padawan turned crazy Dark Jedi. This part is just a theory. He took Mae's sister because he's going to eventually make her his apprentice. Mae has already proven that she isn't what he's looking for. Her sister though, she's a torrent of emotions and really doesn't care for any single person on a personal level. He just needs to squash those nasty selfless Jedi morals of hers. Lastly, this is totally just a guess, but they probably imagine that people aren't going to watch this week to week anyways. They probably expect people to come in and binge this show later. I confess, I waited until Ashoka was finished and then binged it and felt like it was one of the best Star Wars ever. if I had to watch it week to week I'd have hated it.

    Finding myself very much agreeing with you guys, thank you for being so articulate about the issues in what to me seems a very even handed way. I think the big issue is that they're trying to make this big, Rashomon style mystery, that takes very detail oriented writing (I think Breaking Bad had the most detail oriented writing I've seen for example). This is very replacement level (or a little worse) Star Wars writing and that kind of detail has rarely been a strength of Star Wars writing, which has always been more watercolor than pointalism. I think they're trying to put the wrong kind of story into this format. That said, the action here was great.

    My theory is Qimir is a sibling to the twins. Being a boy he was probably raised outside the coven so he never knew them, but since they're related by birth he wanted to have this master-apprentice relationship with Mae, and now probably will make the same offer to Osha.

  • @kirkdarling4120
    @kirkdarling4120Ай бұрын

    You guys are doing what I call "hope watching." As I am. Am I the only person who recognized Mae trying to gaslight Osha...again? Mae has been a psycho from the beginning...that's about the only consistency to her motivation. If the theme of the series is "it's not about good or evil, it's about power and who is allowed to use it," I'm not buying it from Qimir. I could go along with it for the witches because it appeared they were happy just doing their own thing on their own planet with their own people. But if Qimir intends to do bad things instead of just being the Lone Ranger, good and evil does matter. Qimir said, "You might call me Sith," not that he is Sith. He may have just pulled up a word from history and might turn out to be just a "mule" (see Asimov). I don't think there was a moral quandary with Sol merely killing Qimir. First, Qimir was not unarmed. He's a Force-wielder, he's never unarmed. Second, the clearly deadly and ruthless opponent (momentarily) losing _one_ of his weapons during the fight doesn't stop the fight. That's the chance to end the fight permanently. How come Jedi appear to have _no_ training in coordinated fighting? Everything is always just a melee with them. One trained fighter against two who are uncoordinated actually has the advantage.

    Disney's Marvel/Star Wars productions have no idea how to do quiet scenes. They fill the screen with action leaving little chance to understand motivations. The 'people talking in a room' scenes are actually cheaper. They could save money with these scenes and make the show better. The sisters storyline is a mess. Their motivations flip back and forth without making any sense. The show would be better if they only had one character instead of twins. And losing Yord was a blessing. Jecki on the other hand was an amazing character (and performance) though her death was telegraphed very hard.

The bugs were brought by Osha and not the Jedi master, so he didn't actually use the bugs to attack Darth Zipperface she did. Still weird that she used the bugs after stopping him from executing him though. The tracker knows Mae has replaced Osha and will reveal that at some point when the time is right in the plot. Agree that they should have combined the last two episodes. Good breakdown of the episode - enjoy y'all's videos.

    I was wrong about the Sith identity. Bazil didn’t give Pip back, because Mae in disguise smells different from Osha. New theory: “What kind of master doesn’t show his face?” “Why did you risk exposure?” What if Sol is the secret Sith Master to Apprentice Qimir. He’s been unmasked all along, but though his apprentice chooses a mask. Sol keeps himself secret from Qimir, so the apprentice cannot find him and kill his Sith Master. Sol didn’t kill Qimir, because Osha was watching, which would “risk exposure”. After all, Sol had no issue with Qimir being eaten by moths. Also also, Qimir killed Yord (a Jedi) without a weapon.

    Hey, thanks for reacting and giving your opinions :) this for me feels like one of the few places I can take honest criticism about the show from. So.. bracers/helmet were probably made from cortosis (cortosis weave because metal itself is very brittle, but has high energy absorption qualities, it can even short out lightsabers) IN MY OPINION Mae was only intrested in Osha surviving, didn't care much for the Jedi, but was probably very scared of her master and ran (that's why she tried begging I suppose) .. Quimir is weirdly interested in Osha, since their encounter in ep. 2 (I think she has some hidden power she supresses), that's probably why he went after her and wants to make her his apprentice (Acolyte because Quimir is probably a Sith apprentice himself) At the end with the twins Mae says that the Jedi brainwashed Osha (I really think that the episode 3 was really from Osha's perspective manipulated by the Jedi, either mind trick or general brainwashing and manipulation and the next episode will be the flashback from Mae's perspective) My prediction for what happens next is that Sol and "Osha" run back to Vernestra, she forbids them to tell anyone and they try to kill the Sith themselves and get killed (Mae will of course be causing trouble, but not sure how at the moment, gather evidence if the coverup maybe??) Other theory is that Quimir is a pretender Sith, not included in the rule of two.

    Manny Jacinto is fantastic as a Sith in the unmasked scenes. My issue is the Mae character, who is all over the place. Other than that the core story is fine. Even if though last episode was filler, they aren't the only show that does that. And that is Cortosis armor. Beskar isn't the only material that stopped Lightsabers. Cortosis block and shorts them out a short duration. Likely absorbed the stun blast too. And is more rare than Beskar. Osha set the light on him not Sol, and clearly the bugs weren't a real threat.

    As I am sure many will point out cortosis is a metal that will short out lightsabers. About Ki-Adi-Mundi, the Jedi lie, a lot. Watching the scene where he says there are no Sith feels like a flippant response of someone lying. I am sure Ki-Adi-Mundi would say what he said was true, from a certain point of view. One thing that stuck me, was on this episode the power of many and the power of two fell to the power of one. I love both your commentaries. You are a bright light in the fandom when so many others choose the Dark Side. I particularly like Claroos's reaction at the start of the ep asking are we not even going to see the fight as that was my exact thought too. I liked the ep, it was an exciting running battle. Many cool moves, some philosophy, mass death, but did it move the story? We have an obvious reveal and we apparently are doing a twin swap, but really what did this accomplish for the story? With only 8 eps, and short eps at that, all should move things forward. A big battle ep is great and fun, but when last ep seemed filler and this just a long action sequence, that's twice we really don't go anywhere, we just thin the cast and shuffle people around.

    Technically yeah, it would've been the smarter decision. But we know that the jedi code forbids it and sometimes that's a good thing. If Anakin didn't kill Dooku but brought him back to Coruscant for questioning, Sidious whole plan could've been ruined. And if Mace Windu later on would've listened to Anakin before he tried to strike down an unarmed Palpatine ... basically the same thing. So killing an enemy on the spot isn't always the best shot, especially if you know nothing about them.

I liked the use of the force with the lightsaber choreography as well as the dark side user’s helmet being made of what I assume is Cortosis. As a lightsaber battle it definitely has its novelties, but was not the best lightsaber fight of all time. And outside of the lightsaber battle the episode wasn’t really anything to speak of. Honestly, the only thing that interests me about this show is the dark side user. I hesitate to call him a Sith. He doesn’t talk like one. But he does strike me as someone who is a tool of the actual Sith master and apprentice. In the same way that Asajj Ventress was a tool of Sidious and Dooku. I really hope that that’s the case because I think it would fit perfectly. Other than that I have no interest in this show.

    Mae wants justice. Meaning either revenge or getting the Jedi to turn themselves in and confess to their “crimes’. Whereas Osha is just a character that’s basically along for the ride because her twin sister is wanted by the Jedi for the crime of killing Jedi. While the actress is great for physical sequences, unfortunately she’s suffers since it’s almost as if the other characters get just as much screen time and,.. I guess maybe they are both being so far taking for a ride while happening to be the two survivors to what ever happened with their coven 16 years earlier?.. and I’m guess figuring that out as well as what happened here will take dominance, while they learn the truth and with that we will get some depth to her characters. Jecki might still be alive (probably disabled) as the one source I read listed her as being in 7 episodes. They could probably make that work since she’s not human. Their spine is in the same place it doesn’t necessarily that her organs are.

    The writing of this show has definitely been one of its biggest failures, in my opinion. I've gotten the sense from a few of these Star Wars sows on Disney+ that they weren't originally written in the vein of what we ended up getting. I enjoyed Obi-Wan and Boba Fett (well, mostly), but those didn't feel like they were written as miniseries. Obi-Wan felt like it was written as a movie and then stretched out to make it a 6 episode series, which mostly worked, and Boba Fett felt like it was meant to be an arc in the newer season of Mandalorian and was instead stretched out to its own show. Acolyte definitely feels like it wasn't written as an 8 episode series, it feels like it was written as a movie, and they din't fully know how to stretch it out into a series, hence the weird pacing issues and structure.

    With the Osha character stuff, I feel she was better in the first ep. It's like the actress had grounded her in the life she had that gets interrupted by the plot and can't work that into the rest of the show. Plus the show is leaning on Sol lying to her and indoctrinating her. When Osha turned on Mae she sounded so robotic “You must pay for your crimes” like she was on Jedi autopilot there

    Osha is a "damsel in distress". It's going to take her learning the truth about what happened on Brendock for her to become her own person and unlock her power.

    Nope. Beskar doesn't shut off lightsabers. What you are seeing here is Cortosis. Cortosis is Not the OP game breaker people think it is. Even in Legends it has a number of limitations. 1. It is extremely rare. 2. It is brittle and not suitable for use in hard armor or weapons. It is most commonly incorporated as a "weave" 3. It is a Limited use item, As every time it is struck by a lightsaber it is actually being cut partially. It is consumed by use. Smilo Ren's helmet is not Plate, it is a Gimp Mask, That is why pomnel strikes and elbows work All that said, it is in fact, also NOT force repellent. It does not have any magneto helmet anti Telepath powers. That is probably just a misdirect and a red herring. Sowing doubt and misinformation. Even if you did something silly like giving it a padded lining made of Yslmiri skin, ( Which also would not work because they have to be alive) That would cut off your ability to use the force which this clearly doesn't.. Jecki Shares one of the advantages that Ahsoka has over other Padawans in combat, both Theelins and Togruta are evolved from predator species. Allowing instinct to take over and fight immersed in the Force is a different matter entirely. This is a legit Padawan flareout end against long odda. RIP. The concealed lightsaber in the stacked can configuration is not a problem. No one should be trying to say that one blade shoots through the other handle. When connected the circuitry just routes everything to the single emitter. The bigger Problem is their complete inability to understand the passage of time and continuity. The murder and confrontation happened at sunset.... The episode is labeled "night", But it runs all the way through the entire engagement until the following dawn. Now. You may say multiple suns, or multiple moons.... But they didn't and this is just executed.... poorly. They are clearly trying to hedge their bets and avoid committing to Qmir being a Sith. Whether he is or not and whether he is the Master or the Apprentice or not doesn't matter. Calling your pupil an "Acolyte" Only matters under the Rule of 2 from a Certain point of View.... It is the hypocrisy of technically abiding by a rule you are blatantly breaking. Also, As we see with Maul and Savage, if you are NOT a "current" Ro2 Sith and claim the title Master or Apprentice, That is a fast track to getting the actual Sith's attention. Sneaky. Osha used the magnetic coupler on Pip's head to connect to the metallic "X" symbol on the back of Qmir's robes. I don't have a problem with it and it is just the plot convenience of giving him something else to deal with. Coercing the jedi into striking in anger is a recurring theme, and the most common way to get them to slip into the dark side. Now that Mae has betrayed him, I can believe Qmir is on the lookout for any new candidate. Top of his new list to try out are both Osha and Sol.
