I can't speak for experience yet in this game, but in general, people underestimate how 'skinny' you can get a P-38. Its side profile is thinner than many other aircrafts. One helpful tactic when needing to cross in front of an enemy, is to point your wingtip towards them to present a slimmer prifle, and throw in some negative G as needed to make the angle more difficult - sometimes positive, but that is more predictable. Depending on the enemy's reaction, you can potentially roll over and turn this into an offensive situation. Once in a while you'll get a magic moment where it all comes together and you get a perfect deflection shot. Or at least make the pilot reconsider your skill level. Psychology is an important tool.

Your gunnery is an awesome thing to behold. Especially that final victory. Well done, sir!

The P-38 is such a great aircraft. It has tons of character: the twin engines have a very satisfying sound and it is a pleasure to fly. I joke it is my one of my favourite allied planes to fly, but also to shoot down when it's in the opposition 😄 It is a capable fighter, but not strictly speaking dominating. It is however an incredible jabo when you equip it with its massive pay load of 6x500 lb bombs, which is also almost a fully capable fighter to boot. From that perspective I much prefer the P-38 to the Bf 110, even the G2 version, which has a smaller load out and which I find clunkier in a dog fight.

Helloo, my potato can't run this game so I never played it and don't have knowledge enough 'bout this game so... a question: as far as i know the Germans and Soviets pilots flew their fighters at low altitude because of cold, that helps soviets pilots cause the p39 likes low alt. But the question is: is there in Il2 Sturmovick something that prevent Germans to get high altitude and consequently get advantage about the soviets? the pilot feel cold the higher he is, per example. Sorry if mistakes, my english is kinda bad :p

The soviets and german in reality flew low for couple of reasons. And mostly not because it got "cold" in the cockpit. It got cold on any frontline and in any fighter of the war at high altitudes. P-51 pilots were freezing, and so did the soviets and germans in the east. The soviets flew low mainly because that was their doctrine. They were tasked to directly support ground forces. The germany in turn flew low to meet them. However they did of course flew higher than the soviets when possible. Another factor is weather. The soviets flew in most weather conditions. A low cloud ceiling prevented to climb higher. Only a few soviet fighters have the equipment to fly "blind" through clouds. Last reason is engine performance: You pointed it out the P-39 lacked high altitude performance. but so did every other soviet fighter. They had really poor super chargers. in the sim the same reaons apply. However any skilled pilot flies as high as possible for the given task. You cant defend tanks when you fly at 8km. But if your job is hunting fighters then flying at 8km might be the thing to do.
