    I'm right there with you brother! I've had them all I've carried them all! from a $400 guardian tactical to a $300 microtech. sold them all. bought 4 lightning elites like yours. carry every single day. on my boat off my boat, everywhere. customers ask where did I get it? I tell them, and then I tell them. they are only $35!

    @CaptDavesSportfishing I am going to get a Guardian or Microtech as an edc not on the boat this year myself. Now that they are legal in VA, I want to own and carry a very nice and durable knife. (But not on the boat haha) Overall it's hard to beat the lightning for a boat knife or a knife you don't mind getting beat up a bit. Whick did you like better and why? The Microtech or Guardian? Just got the same exact lighting elite from grindworx and I’m very happy with it. Don’t know why I waited so long to get it! Thinking about putting some skateboard grip tape on the sides of it, especially since I know the finish is just going to wear off anyway.

    OTF knives will fail if not properly maintained. They are mechanized, which means from time to time they should be disassembled, cleaned and lubed slightly. I check and tighten the screws on anything that I buy with screws.

    I think the "fingers in front of the cutting edge" argument is a bit silly and is similar to the "no manual safety on a handgun" argument. When it comes to either deploying a knife or drawing a handgun, speed is usually a huge factor. But in both cases, there is a huge difference between getting into the fight and making the weapon safe. You are in a hurry to get the gun/knife out and ready to use, but there is no such time constraint on making the item safe or putting it away. If you're in a rush to put your gun back into the holster or fold the blade back into the handle, then you're much worse off than you think you are. You should be able to easily & quickly deploy your knife, yes. But why are you in a rush to put it away? You can take your time to ensure the blade folds away safely. Now, with all that said, I still understand the desire to keep your fingers clear of the blade. After all, that's why most of us don't recommend carrying a folding knife for any defensive purposes. If you strike something hard with a folding knife, there's always a chance that the blade could fold back directly towards your fingers. But I've only ever had this happen to me once in the 25 years I've been carrying knives, and that was because the latch on the knife wasn't sufficiently locking the blade in place. Luckily, when it did happen, I only got a minor cut on the skin of the digit closest to the palm of my right index finger. It wasn't even all that deep, it just made me realize that there was a problem with the lockup of the blade. Of all the other 35+ folding knives in my collection for the past 25 years, none have ever folded closed onto my fingers. I don't know how often it happens to other folks, but I'd be willing to bet that most of their experiences were caused by negligence or misuse. With all that said, I actually do agree with your conclusion that these knives are likely the safest to use for the handler. But it's also worth noting that a DA OTF knife is MUCH more limited in its utility for the simple fact that they just don't quite lock up securely. If you were to take 50 different DA OTF knives and thrust the tip into wood (or something similarly hard) then you're going to have many more failures or blade retractions than you would with a SA OTF or folder. It's just an inherent weakness in the design. That's also why I would advise you carry a fixed blade knife to use for any hard, heavy duty uses in addition to your DA OTF.

  • @drewishaf

    @drewishaf

    I also want to say that I LOVE the DA OTF knives. I carry at least 3 knives in my person all day, everyday. I've always got my Shivworks Clenchpick for versatility and defense. Then, I also keep a spring assist knife (can't recall the models I usually carry offhand) like a Gerber, Kershaw, or an SOG Slimjim. As of recently, I also carry a Schrade Viper but that is going to my brother in the next week or two. It's just a much better left hand knife and is a single-action OTF. I'm waiting for my Lightning to come in so I can drive the 3.5 hours to exchange the Schrade for a snowblower and an afternoon for shooting some really badass rifles with him. I'm incredibly glad to hear such good things about the Lightning. I chose it specifically because I don't often hear people have any major complaints about them and I tend to be a little rough on kit (which is why I usually choose CZ guns as my EDC guns; I've NEVER had a single malfunction from a CZ in the 50,000+ rounds through them despite all having been carried every single day for years on end.) Thanks for the info and I appreciate the commentary on these topics.

    @joey15151 First off let me explain my answer to this comment: "You should be able to easily & quickly deploy your knife, yes. But why are you in a rush to put it away? You can take your time to ensure the blade folds away safely." In most situations this is true and especially a gun! However, When you have 4 customers bringing fish over the rail of the boat at a frantic rate on a hot bite and one gets a hook in them, tell me about being in a hurry to put the knife back in your pocket. :-) Or the firefighter cutting a seriously injured crash victim from a seatbelt of a burning car? There are many sporting and emergency instances when being able to deploy and stow FAST is a huge benefit. That is where my opinion comes from. Thank you for watching!
