Today we look at what is probably my favourite part of nightscape photography .. Light Painting. There are many dynamics associated with lighting for nightscape images and I'll try to cover most of those in this video. We'll look at various types of lighting and when and where to make the most of what conditions we have.
As usual I've added links to download the free workshop guides and Raw files associated with this weeks episode. I'm always happy to see how you go with the editing of these images. As well as that I don't mind you sharing your edits on social media as long as you let people know where the original images came from.
Remember that I'm providing this workshop series completely free of charge here on youtube but if you feel inclined to help me out financially there is an option to do so via paypal on my website.
As always I'd love to chat with you down below in the comments section. Thanks again for your awesome support.

Another absolute masterclass, Richard. All your content is excellent, and this video is superb. A lot of complicated stuff is covered, but I found it "went in" very easily! I've said before: everyone interested in photography would benefit from your content, even if they had no intention of shooting nightscapes, purely because the coverage of all the technical and artistic photographic principles is so comprehensive and so well delivered. Fantastic work, sir, and very much appreciated.

Hello Richard. I have learned a lot from you since I discovered your channel in January. I live about 40 miles west of Chicago where the corn and bean fields start. I appreciate how you share this craft especially the planning and foreground subjects. Being near farm land I have been shooting barns, silos, trees and a couple beautiful country churches. In April I finally found a few spots within an hours drive that are bortal 4-5 and took my first milkyway pictures! It is surprising how much light is produced by a small town, highways and electric generator windmills. I hope over the next few months to keep improving my pictures. My equipment includes a Nikon 3200, several 2.8 and 3.5 lenses, a home made barn door tracker and a converted surveyors tripod as a stable base. Cheers!

Hi Richard, Thamks for yet another great vid. It was nice to get to see your wife - it looks like she can really cook well ! I was pleased you mentioned the use of flashes. I had considered this a few years ago, thinking I could dose the light on large subjects better but as you said, due to the short duration it is very harsh. As you know, I recently messed up using gels but now know better. I am waiting for the next clear weather to try again.

Allô Richard! Finding words to express what I’d like to say is quite hard ... Well! I would listen to you forever. I’ve watched this video (like all the others, anyways) a few times already and will do it again for sure. So much information given in such a genuine style and natural kindness. Someone told me I was very technical. I guess that if I have no idea about what I’m doing and how to achieve it, I won’t produce anything good. I’m always searching for places and planning future night images. It has become an obsession, I believe. I would be out there, under the stars ✨ every night. (If so, it’s kinda hard to get up in the morning to go to work, obviously 😂) Luv ya, MASTER of Night Scape Images ... Say Hi 👋 to Glenys!

Hi Richard - going over your content as a refresher from previous time spent with you, gearing up to get out again soon as isolation laws begin to loosen up. Phoned the local constabulary to ask if I can stand in a lonely paddock in the middle of the night to take photographs of the night sky? They asked if it was my job? I said no, it is my hobby. They said no. Anyhow, I have just popped 2 small payments as a way to say thanks for what you are doing providing this content. Keep well.

I asked them about traveling to pick up some work from a gallery . .it is my job. the guy said he wouldn't book me but he couldn't guarantee other members wouldn't. They then proceeded to tell me to check the Dept of Health website. I think they don't really know what's going on.

Simon and Richard, I agree, everyone is confused and probably a little scared for various reasons. I too have contacted the local copper tasked with covering the region I was looking to attend and spoke through my concerns and confusion. He was patient enough to look up the same information as me and we together read through the advice currently out there. We parted ways agreeing that I wasn’t going anywhere near anyone or frequenting any high contact areas so he said I was fine and that he appreciated my forward thinking by asking for permission not forgiveness. Because of this I was able to do as I requested with clear conscience and support. As with yourself Simon, he did also advise that I may not enjoy the same support from all of his peers so for that reason, my approach was definitely advised. Good luck to you both. Thanks for another brilliant workshop Richard.

Another great video Richard, looking forward to getting back out as soon as we are able to. The only thing I thought is worth mentioning for your viewers is the different amount of lighting required depending on reflection eg chrome or light coloured paint, compared to a rusty or dark subject. It goes hand in hand with lighting distance & intensity. I know how hard to is for you to fit all of the information into a limited timeslot but it's worth noting for those new to lightpainting. Keep up the great work, you are an inspiration to many. 📷✨ Great to see Glenys making an appearance too, say hi for me.

Nice, really thorough Richard. I enjoy the way you formulate ideas and concepts. Coming from basicly an Astrophptography background (very, very technical) to this freeer more creative style of night photography has been quite liberating. I've often wished that AP was a little more creative, I like the technical challenges of capturing a Galaxy or Nebula that's hundreds of light years away...it's satisfying but it doesn't fill that creative niche.
