How To Find The Milky Way

Download Guides & Files here: www.nightscapeimages.com.au/w...
The question many people ask me is, How do I find the milky way in the night sky ...? In this episode we'll take a detailed look at that topic as well as delve into some other aspects of locating subjects to shoot whilst out under the stars.
I like to keep things simple and even though nightscape photography is a very technical genre of photography I think there are certain ways of thinking that help us in our endeavours both in the planning stage and whilst out in the field in the dead of night.
I'd be delighted to chat with you down below in the comments section and I very much appreciate any contribution you can afford via my Paypal link on the website. And don't forget the free files as well as RAW images available for download at the link above. Thanks again guys ...!!!

    Richard, thanks so much for this course. I have been following your KZread channel for a while and have learned quite a bit from your videos. I just wish I could get out more to practice the techniques, it doesn't help that I live in an area that is besieged by clouds almost constantly. The few times I have been able to get out have been much easier because of the clear way in which you present the material. Including the RAW files to practice on is a real Godsend for someone such as myself. Looking forward to more episodes. To everyone else out there: this is well worth the price of a monetary contribution and hitting the like button costs $0.

    Hi Richard, as an astronomer I can confirm you gave great advice. Stellarium is a great visual program and my astronomy society uses it to illustrate presentations. I personally don't use it, I have used hundreds of similar programs and have found the best one for me is an App called SkySafari. This App is somewhat overkill for the Milky Way, but can really do everything, so much so, I don't use any desktop Apps for this purpose. As for Photopills I can only say, it is really the best. The closest to it is TPE which is really great and in particular has great graphics, but I just find PP easier to use and it has everything I need in one App. One thing PP is good for, is to say when and where the galactic core is at it's highest. This is important for us in northern europe, as it doesn't ever rise fully like in Australia, so it is important to optimise things to get best results. Also, the app has a useful little scale saying if it is a good night for Milky Way photography ( based on the moon phase ). This is shown in little blue bars at the top of the screen, one doesn't need to move around in other apps to determine this. As I said, I rate PP as one of the best apps available, there are also loads of good tutorials on its use onlne.

    Very good and well planned. I use Stellarium all the time. What I have learned about Stellarium is that it gives you the view of the Milky-Way according to the light pollution at the point you are searching. Your view is a lot darker than my view up here in Pennsylvania in the U.S. I made a similar video on my channel discussing how to find the Milky-Way here in the States. Very good video, Richard...

    Thanks Richard, once again a great Video. I've used Stellarium for years for Astrophotography. It's an amazing FREE project, hat's off to the developers. You can also control your telecsope mount with Stellarium and ASCOM sofware. One of the biggest things I like about it you didn't touch on and that's setting up FoVs. You can input your Telecsope/Lens data along with your Camera sensor info and it will give you a refrence FoV that's helpful when planning a shot. Take care and see you next week.

    Awesome video, Richard. In one of your videos you drew a line in the dirt and said those on the left are artistic and those are those on the right are more into camera settings (I hope I got that right.) I am way on the right side of the line and it is a struggle for me to move toward the left side, in other words, take my logical brain and try to be more artistic. In fact it is sometimes even a painful experience. But I keep moving forward. Got a decent photo of and old barn with the Milky Way last week. I really like your advice on getting permission. I didn't do that at the barn but I will the next time I am out there. Take care. Nyall.

    Second episode done. The ways of focusing to infinity you mention can be found on youtube, they make sence for older cameras which don't have good live view mode. About reviewing gear by different influensers, it's really hard to distinguish if they are telling us "truth" or they are payed to praise product. You are right, better trust person using the gear regularly than the one reviewing it. One question, is there a software that can show us light polution so we can decide of the location will work or not. Thanks again Mr. Richard.

    I’ve noticed that although you’ve done some videos and the occasional mention of a tracker, you don’t seem to actually use it much. I’ve considered getting one but have found that stacking yields pretty impressive results without the expense of the tracker. I’d love to see a video comparing the pros and cons of trackers and how they can improve - or hinder - nightscapes vs. stacking. Thanks for another great video!

  • @nightscapeimages.richard

    @nightscapeimages.richard

    Thanks for watching. Very good questions. In a nutshell .. yes I do have a tracker and no I don't use it much, mainly because for the vast majority of my work I do multiple exposure blends of my foregrounds. When using a tracker the sky is tracked but the foreground is blurred by the movement. Therefore they can become a nightmare to get all the images lined up properly in post production. It's pretty straight forward when you have hard edge foregrounds like distant mountains or the like but when you add trees and other complex foreground shapes .. well .. it's a nightmare. Stacking bypasses all of that hassle because you are never moving the camera between shots. Having said that, there is no doubt that tracked sky shots are awesome and can look incredible. Hope that's helpful.

  • @ScottMoore

    @ScottMoore

    4 жыл бұрын

    Nightscape Images I guess in the end whether tracked or stacked, the final image is still a composite, but I agree that having a blurry foreground makes the post processing a real headache. Most of the best tracked composites seem to have been made from images taken on different dates and times and even different locations. I think I prefer the stacking method!

    Hi Richard. You mentioned white ballance, and I couldn't agree with you more. However, I also adjust the picture profiles in real time. The two or three that I've set up, out a buzillion profiles my camera has, has taken me hours / days. Often not taking any usable shots but just something to guage what the images look like IRL. Would you say this is worth while, as the scenes I stage my photography vary quite heavily? Anything from bright city scapes with lots of light pollution, to lightpainting interior shots of abandoned buildings. TLDR; Are picture profiles useful? Great follow up to your last vid. From what I find I don't think you need it but no one really says definitively...or do you have a 3rd 603 that you attach to the Flash?

    Thanks a lot Rick. This weekend I'll be releasing a video specifically talking about shooting nightscapes using flash. Anyway, you do need to mount a third unit on the camera hot shoe to fire the flash. On that unit you have to set the trigger to TX. On all the others you set the triggers to TRX. Having said that, not all cameras will operate rear curtain sync with non genuine flash equipment . .Canon in particular.

  • @nightscapeimages.richard

    That's a hard one Brad. I'd say that if it only goes to iso3200 it would be quite a few years old. What brand is it .. ?? Some brands like to be pushed higher than others. There's no doubt that the later madels certainly cope a lot better at those high iso's. You'll certainly be able to shoot a lot of nightscapes at 3200 but for others it will be too dark. A lot also depends on the lenses you use. If you have a really wide open aperture lens .. say f1.4 then you'll probably be fine at 3200, but if you're using a kit lens at f3.5 you'll struggle.
