The derwent lightfast are my favourite too,the luminance and polychromos tied 2nd, gorgeous pencils.

100% agree about the disappointing tray quality! And the lack of any foam protectors is quite concerning. I prefer this type of lid however, as it saves so much space on my desk than a hinged lid does.

Lightfast beats polychromos

What mislead people is the fact that they don’t know that ALL pencils have wax and oil in their leads composition but the proportion of them in each brand/line varies. So, when there is more oil than wax in the composition, the pencils are said to be “oil based” and when there is more wax than oil, the pencils are said to be “wax based”. The first one have harder leads and the second ones are softer.

my main colored pencil is polychromos, but i find myself coloring too dark, so i added ten of the Lightfast colors in the very light tones. I use these as underpainting which help keep my colors light. Also they are softer than polychromos , so they act as blenders on the last layer; nice pencils, worth the money.

Just to add. Zucchini kitty also said they are her new favorites. I've purchased the 36 set to see if I'd like them and I sure do!!! I will complete this set for sure. And I also like using colored pencils with other mediums, especially ink tense and watercolor. Love the feeling of the pencils sticking too the paint. Karen from Canada

I've fallen in love with these pencils too. I have been buying them in batches as open stock. They are really creamy and blend well and, as you say, the colours are really special.

Inktense comes in the same type of tray and is also expensive. Derwent knows that most colourists are going to remove the pencils from the packaging, so no sense in putting them in an expensive package and charging more money like Luminance. I think I will invest in these.

Shes right. These beat polychromos. I haven't tried CD but ive tried lyra, prismacolor, pablo, polychromos all the Derwent lines and these are the best of ALL ive tried. Definitely Derwents best. The fact that they are oil based like polychromos and as light-fast yet softer wins it all

I am a new subbie, I am new to coloured pencils, and I have been watching you compare and swatch the different sets. I want them all! Derwent is made here in the UK, and these are my next set... But I want the Caran d'Ache Pablo and luminous too. I started this journey to learn how to illustrate my calligraphy, but it's kinda grown into a colour frenzy obssession. Colour turns my world. Thank you for all your videos, they are so helpful. I need to go back to watercolour land and tubes too! So many choices, so many mediums, so many colours! but oh my it's worth the mental overload!

how do they work over watercolors n gouache? i been using polychromos with winsor n newton,holbeing n mgrahm.. gouache and professional watercolors... can these be scanned without any glare?

Any info on where to get the rest of the 28 colors from these Pencils? Open stock or do they come in sets? I must say, since I'm here in switzerland, these colors are already pretty hard to get, even looking at ebay or german amazon (amazon.com doesn't deliver here). I can even barely find these pencils at my online art stores, let alone the local ones. I'll be getting the luminance for my 25 birthday soon, but these colors just look amazing and so appealing to me, I just HAVE to get these too, to accompany the luminances 🤤 I just really hope they get better availability here.

I just bought the 72 pencils set + the 28 other colors on open stock at deltaart.ca (in Edmonton, Canada and I live in Montreal) and they are much less expensive than any other place in UK or USA.

They are awesome pencils!!!! I'm not a fan of the package either. It’s a very cheap plastic mine was actually a broken the plastic was cracked. I always repackage mine into nice pencil cases. So it wasn't a deal-breaker for me. Yes, they are oil-based pencils you are correct from everything that I've ever read. I love the colors, especially the skin tones and how they lay down so I can deal with the cheap case. Take care of yourself enjoy your new pencils, I know you will. I do!!! Until next time.

wait what, no such things as oil based pencils,,,, even the polychromos by faber castell is oil'base pencils ;) maybe the oil'base pencil police should call up faber castell, calling them out for "lying" :P Have a lovely day pencil police :'D

I bought my set of Castle Art colored pencils because of your video. How would you compare the color laying down of these Derwents with the Castle Arts? BTW I like your swatching videos so don't worry about the time. I find them relaxing as well as informative.

The Castle Art pencils perform extremely well for how affordable they are, but they just can't compare to Lightfast. These are professional quality and a joy to use. You can buy them open stock, so I would recommend you buy a couple and see for yourself how beautiful they are. 😊

I would like to know can lightfast hold the point well as polychromos? I prefer these gorgeous color showed by lightfast, but polychromos can hold the point well. I almost place order for polychromos. But the colors you showed in this video are what I want!

Hi I have all of the above except Procolour. The Lightfast are the BEST! in terms of application/laydown and intensity. Of course they are lightfast as they are named (non-fade). There is 100 colours. Inktense are water soluble, giving you beautiful transparency like a watercolour pencil-however it becomes permanent like an ink (unlike watercolour that can be reworked with more water once dry). Inktense colours are also stunning-there are 72 colours in the range. Artist are Derwents traditional main-stay artist grade pencil. Been around for ever. As a kid in the 70s they were every arty kids dream snd for the wealthy kids who went to private schools and wanted to brag or those who were destined for art college. I have had my set for 30 years and still love them. They are a harder wax-based pencil (long lasting). Hold a fantastic point for ages, layer and blend beautifully-come in 120 colours. Everyone of these pencils are of exceptional quality. They feel beautiful in your hand and do not break, split or crumble (like Prismacolor). You can but all of these is sets or as open stock. I recommend you buy one or two of each in open stock to try. They are worth it. Go check out their colour charts on Derwents site. All beautiful colours. The Lightfast are by far my favourite. My Polychromos were before I got these. I also have Caran D’Ache Luminance which are lovely, but the Derwent Lightfast can’t be beat.
