However fun it may be on light gear the bit heavier gear is better for the fish, less lactic acid etc but obv it's fun to watch even if it's not the best for the fish...

This is AWESOME!!! This is how I fish most of the time. I use the Okuma Recon 7ft spinning rod and Epixor 40XT, with 12lb braid & flourocarbon leader. I have lost some monsters, however it has really improved my game tremendously...

Not a fan of mismatched tackle. If there are big fish around i don't want to come home with an empty spool knowing that 200 meters of high quality braid has just become a wildlife hazard for the next ten years.

Just to clarify, clearly an angler with Jon's experience can do stuff most of us shouldn't try at home. But still he switched over to a heavier line and leader after it became clear the ultralight stuff was getting iffy. Legends

In hawaii we call it the “Aha Aha” , poor man marlin. Has a blue color bone . An OK eating fish. Nice catch. Sometimes a leader line attach to the tail area to drag out a live bait to catch Ulua’s.

That is actually a somewhat rare fish and we’ve had two wash up on shore on Oregon Coast in the US. Or maybe it’s just rare in our cold waters?

PE 0.8, 10lb leader...?? I noticed you are using two different measure units when talking about the lines on your actual setup. I realize that PE # refers to line diameter in metric and lb represents the streng of the line but how they relate? To be honest I have no clue. Would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on this topic. Especially when you are talking about GT setups like PE 10 main line and 200 lb leader. How can these be interpreted? I like to cast a fair bit above recommended cast weight on all my light rods and they feel OK but that sugapop specifically feels like 10g-15g is all it really wants to send out there. I haven't snapped anything yet but still I wouldn't encourage doing it!

Really good tough budget saltwater reel.....if you rinse after salt and oil they last.....high speed pickup, smooth drag with lots of capacity
