Love the vid as always. I have to say I felt a similar way when I was exploring the Wise Phone. I'm keeping an eye on the LP3 as I'm still trying to find a sensible way to implement the LP2 into my daily life (conflicts arising from parenting demands and necessary work apps). Keep up the great work, can't wait to see your thoughts once the LP3 arrives.

As a current iPhone user (1 personal and 1 for work), I've been looking at the light phone 2 for a while to replace my personal device... and then i found the Wisephone, and thought, I'll give that a shot. I like the "idea" behind it, but since the release of the light phone 3, AND your video, I've been awakened to why I've been wanting a "lighter" phone in the first place! I immediately cancelled my Wisephone 2 preorder, and ordered the light phone 3 on the spot. Thank you for the inspiration.

Because where would the fun be in in that? And if you're trying to avoid addiction, why would you want something that looks exactly like the addictive/toxic thing you're trying to escape? I love the LP 2 and 3. They feel unique-something I'm actually proud to own and get joy out of using. Also, although you can "make" a smartphone dumb, it's just as easy to reinstall addictive apps, which 99% of people end up doing. With the LP 2/3 that's simply impossible, which feels amazing. (:

Hey Andrew. I was wanting a phone to have call quality on par with my iPhone 7, have texting still be relatively easy, and have wifi texting/calling in a pinch, and a camera. I'm tired of the smartphone slab form factor, but the two dumb phones I have tried, Sunbeam Orchid and Nokia, both had mediocre call quality so I went back to my Iphone 7. How's the call quality on light phone? Maybe it's unrealistic of me to think these small manufacturers can match the call quality?

The Light Phone 2 sounded great to me with headphones, although the speaker is lousy. I never put a phone up to my head, since it increases the load of radiation, which we're already bathed in 24/7. They waited 5 years before starting to build the LP3 and the design looks premium with high end materials, so I have to imagine the speaker and call quality will be on par with regular smartphones.

I understand why parents would want to be able to see what’s happening on their child’s phone, but they delete contacts that your child program on their phone. It’s a big no-no for me mainly because there’s some helicopter or some parents who like to abuse their powers we’ll start deleting contacts of child friend just on the basis of you talk to them too much or some other reason and that’s not OK. It’s one thing for the phone to be like your child sending inappropriate things. You probably should have a talk with them then straight up giving you power to do things without them knowing

Yea, that was my thought, as well. Generally if kids are in fact getting into "real" trouble, it's usually because there's some deeper issue that hasn't been addressed at home, and it's better to work on opening voluntary communication lines than aggressively controlling a child's connections to the outside world.

I'd like a video on where owning the Light Phone III might actually trip someone up. For example, will I be able to use 2fa properly? What about unlocking a CitiBike in NYC? They do still have physical keys but for how long? And isn't the co-founder of Lyft an investor and doesn't Lyft own CitiBike? Just saying. I definitely love the idea of the phone and have pre-ordered one ... but I wonder if some "essential" function ... some tool that I NEED... will be missing and drive me back to a smartphone.... making this whole experiment a waste of money. I have a feeling certain tools are just not negotiable on a phone anymore and I also feel like maybe Light Phone III doesn't yet quite have enough of them to make their product a true, workable, long-lasting replacement. Hopefully I am wrong.

  • @AndrewFolts

Obviously, they can't include every possible tool, or the Light Phone will just be a regular smartphone. This is why I don't live in a city. I don't want to be forced to live a certain way. That said, you could get an small tablet and tether it to the Light Phone via the hotspot, which would give you the extra features you need in a more ungainly size that's not as addictive as a pocketable smartphone.

It depends on your requirements. For example, some people in certain counties literally can't live without WhatsApp, which the LP doesn't yet have (but may eventually). For me, even the LP2 was good enough and had all the features I needed to get through daily life. You just have to ask yourself whether you really NEED certain features, or if you only LIKE the convenience and could live without them.

  • @AndrewFolts

Just read the landing page. The idea of temporarily or permanently blocking apps is interesting, but there would have to be a way to undo it for safety reasons (like if you accidentally disabled the GPS or something), which means that it probably isn't that hard to reinstall addictive apps. I prefer that un-phoneness of the LP3, where the Wisephone and BoringPhone just look like regular smartphones. I'd also be wary of investing in BoringPhone, given the limited info and generic branding. It's not a project I expect to succeed.

Like texting less and calling more, getting better with real maps, and being out in nature with no tech. That said, I feel like the LP3 will solve the major hangups for a lot of people. @@AndrewFolts thanks for the love!🤣 But let’s be real, if you get a Light Phone you have to have also your wallet with your credit card with you, otherwise how are you going to pay for stuff? Also, a restaurant that only has QR as for menu, how do you order then? How do you check your bank account with these phone? A phone is not only for texting/calling or navigation… My point is that another gadget (computer, tablet) have to come by to save the day, right? I wish I could buy the Light Phone and rely on it for my day to day life, but I think you can’t. We are trapped in this capitalism 😅

@@angrycatalan325 Light is planning on implementing contactless payments, so that shouldn't be an issue longterm. I've never once come across a restaurant that didn't have a menu, so it's never been a problem. I also have no need to check my bank account on my phone. That's something I'd do on the computer. I don't feel trapped by capitalism at all, I've rarely been in a situation where I needed a smartphone, even after three years.

The navigation on the LP2 works fine in text mode, although the visual map view is unusable. The LP3 will presumedly be much better, thanks to them switching to a normal LED screen. For music, I just upload MP3's to the dashboard and they're automatically synced to the LP2. It's not as nice as Spotify, but you can use the tool NoteBurner to download playlists/albums from your account.

  • @AndrewFolts

Light Phone 3, hands down. I like that the Minimal Phone has an e ink screen, but the design is clunky and there's no info about the company on their website. Probably a Chinese knockoff brand, which means you're going to get a low quality product, from the UI to the build materials, and durability.

  • @AndrewFolts

As stated, the point of the video was not about specs. On paper both the Light Phone 3 and Wisephone 2 have the same basic features and will work fine from a practical perspective. So there was no need to cover this. What did need covering was the underlying motivations of each company. On the one hand, you have Light Phone, who are transparent, funny, creative, unique, and ethical, while on the other you have Techless, who are shady, unoriginal, manipulative, and deceptive-hiding behind stock photography, intentionally burying info about their CEO's history (Chick-fil-A, etc), and encouraging toxic controlling behavior in parents. Even if Wisephone was actually an amazing product (which it's not), I still would never buy from such a morally corrupt brand.
