Light Painting Tutorial: Spirgraphs and Physiograms
In this light painting photography tutorial Jason D. Page shows how to create a light painting spirograph or physiograms using tools from the Light Painting Brushes system. Spirograph are complex looking light painting that are really easy to create. This is a great project for people just starting out with light painting, also a excellent project for teachers that are interested in sharing the light painting art form with their students. Spirographs are fun and easy to make.
How did I focus: The way I do it is simply bend down to about the same height as the table and pull focus. You can either focus on auto or manual mode but make sure that once you get focus you switch the camera back to manual so that when you turn the lights off your camera doesn't "search for focus" in the dark. If you want to be very precise you can also measure the distance from the hanging light to the focal plane of your camera and then set that distance on your lens.

    Try using a "Y" shaped string (tied to two different spots on the ceiling, and comes down to one string holding your light), that one makes an interesting pattern... more square like or box shape.

    Nice. Back in 2012 it occurred to me something like this could work as a spirograph; I did the same thing and I thought I had stumbled onto something novel. It had been done before, of course. First person to light paint at all was Picasso, in fact.

    Jason, can you please provide more explanation of the Bulb Mode, and how that works with this process?

  • @LightPaintingPhotography

    @LightPaintingPhotography

    3 жыл бұрын

    Bulb Mode is basically a manual override of the shutter so that I have full control over when the shutter opens and when it closes. Bulb mode is similar to manual mode but instead of adjusting the camera settings in manual mode to say ISO 100, F8 30 Second Exposure. In BULB Mode I am telling the camera that I want ISO 100, F8 but I will open the shutter when I want and I will close it when I want. In bulb mode I am not giving the camera any instruction on a specific shutter time. I open and close the shutter via a wired or wireless shutter release that is attached to the camera. This way I can leave the shutter open for as long as it takes me to light paint the image.

    I believe this was using the Tokina 11-17 Lens. I usually shoot using a wide angle lens. The settings vary I usually shoot these around iso100 and F11-F22 depending on how bright the light source is. The exposure times can vary as well depending on how many different tools I include in the image. If you shoot in a dark room you can let the exposure run for a long time.

  • @LightPaintingPhotography

    @LightPaintingPhotography

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thank you glad you liked the tutorial! The easiest way to get focus is IF your camera has a flip out LCD screen and the live view function you can set your camera down with the screen flipped out and then use either manual focus of auto focus WITH THE LIGHTS ON to get focus, if you use auto focus make sure to turn it to manual focus before you turn the lights off. If your camera doesn't have those features you can measure the distance from the hanging light to the focal plane of your camera and the set the distance on your lens.

    Not really as you can always adjust your camera settings accordingly. I guess if you had an outrageously bright flashlight you could blow out the image but then you could also make other adjustments such as a ND filter on your lens .

    Hi, I was wondering... please don't laugh... but if your camera is on the table... how do you make sure you are in focus? I use back button focusing. That is my first question. Second one is this... I don't own the light pens you have.. but rather I do have some cheap dollar store finger lights... I trieds this using the finger lights... and BLAH they didn't look good at all. I had my settings, 100ISO, 16 A, and bulb mode... but the light was really blown out :( What lens were you using and how far was your lens from the light source if you don't mind my asking. Looking forward to trying these and having them turn out! Thank you for your video, very informative

    Hi Jacqueline, The easiest way to achieve focus is to just get down to about the table height and pull focus then make sure to switch to manual focus so that when the lights go out your camera is not searching for focus. For something a little more accurate you can measure the distance from the hanging light to your camera and focus with the distance. We recommend using a wide angle lens for this technique something around 11-16MM that way you have more space to spin the light source and get more complex and interesting patterns. If your images are blown out try stopping down your lens a bit more that should help. :)

    Hey Jacqueline the majority of the Light Painting Brushes are made from plastics and natural rubber however some of the parts that make up the Light Painting Brushes tools are manufactured in a facility where they also manufacture latex products so if you have an allergy we would recommend that you use normal precautions as if the tools do contain latex.

    LightPaintingPhoto a lens is a piece of glass or other transparent substance with curved sides for concentrating or dispersing light rays. You really didn't know what I was asking? Wow! Was just wondering if there was a lens in the light pen so I can make one. Nevermind though I figured it out. But wow!

    How do you get this setup in focus if the camera is flat on the table ?

  • @LightPaintingPhotography

    @LightPaintingPhotography

    3 жыл бұрын

    The way I do it is simply bend down to about the same height as the table and pull focus.

  • @LightPaintingPhotography

    @LightPaintingPhotography

    We will be making a video on focusing in the dark very soon, for now: There are two main ways to focus in the dark. The first is you can illuminate the space with either a bright flashlight or if you are inside turn the lights on. With the area illuminated or lights on you focus on your subject or area you want to be in focus using manual or your automatic focus. Once you pull focus on your subject or area switch your camera back to MANUAL mode and then turn the lights off. If you are outside in the dark or you don’t have a light bright enough to illuminate your subject or area you can take a flashlight and place it next to or on your subject or area where you want to focus. With your subject or area illuminated with the flashlight then you focus on your subject using manual or your automatic focus. Once you pull focus on your subject switch your camera back to MANUAL mode and then turn the lights off.
