Light-Duty Gravel Grinding: A Rim-Brake Road Bike Setup

#Gravel #RoadBikeSetup #RimBrakes
Have you ever wondered if you could convert an older road bike, with rim brakes, into a gravel riding bike? Well, that’s exactly what I set out to do for this video. I’ll walk you through the modifications that I made to my road bike to give it some gravel flare. I’ll also give a few pointers and provide a list of components that you’d want to consider should this bike conversion be something you’d like to pursue in the future. Let’s get started!

    I have the same bike but it is a 2013 domane. I have been riding it on gravel since I purchased it. I switched to clement strada lgg 28s (measured out at around 30) for the 2014 alpine loop grand fondo which had two difficult gravel climbs. I have since worn those out and put on some donnelly strada lgg 28s and those measure true to size. I have continued to use that bike on gravel and I have never lost a chain in the 2x compact setup. I have not had any flats and I have run around 65 psi since I first put the tires on. It is a capable gravel setup for the gravel roads of fauquier and loudoun without a doubt. I have since switched my gravel bike to a Trek XO2 with 700 x 35 and now a state allroad with 650 x 50 donnelly tires. The real advantage to my newer gravel setups is stability and comfort. I have kept the domane in the fleet for paved centuries and the like. Love the vids. Keep up the good work!

    Just come across this; I had the 2018 Domane SL5, and fitted the same tyres, and the Fulcrum 7 CX wheels to it for light off road rides. That is all I changed - and it seemed to work. I think the later Domane came with a bigger cassette, so a 32 was no problem. Later, I managed to fit the 32mm SK tyres which were an improvement. And in winter when the light gravel turned to mud, the 30mm Schwalbe CX Pro...to become a faux CX bike. As for road only use, I had Challenge Strada Bianca or Vittoria Corsa tyres in 30mm.

    I have made something quite similar with my bike: 2022 Canyon Endurace with rim brakes. I fitted 28mm Panaracer's Gravelking Slick tires, and it worked surprisingly well. In my area (near to the Tour of Flanders in Belgium) there are lots of paved streets and very dusty roads, I had never had any problem. I ride with tubes, without sealant. In case I want to ride only slick roads, I simply change my tires for 25mm GP5000 or 28mm Panaracer Race D Evo 4.

    @@juanramonoltra1440 in this case, Conti's are 25mm and Gravelking are 28mm. In one year of experience with 25mm Conti's, I changed my mind: I still ride Gravelking Slick 28mm when I need more grip, but Continental GP5000 28mm on smoother roads rather than 25mm. I ride 28mm Panaracer Race Do Evo in the winter for more puncture resistance on smoother roads. Hope this helps

    @@MultiLuc28 unfortunately no I haven't tried. The max width I have tried is 28. I had the idea of fitting 30mm but I measured and it seems that it won't fit, it might rub on the brake calipers. Some brake calipers do allow 30mm tires but my Shimano 105 don't. It might work but when you ride gravel roads, mud and debris will quickly get stuck between the tire and the caliper. Some brake calipers allow 30mm but you have to check on the internet which one does. Hope this helps!

This is something I plan on doing in the near future with my Klein Quantum Race (which currently has 700C 23 Road Racing tires). I have taken this bike on a gravel rail trail and it handled the trail, but I felt every mile I put into it. The Gravel King tires should help. Otherwise, it was fine.

    So if I understood correctly, the strategy for achieving lower gearing was to install a chainring that was larger than the original inner chainring?

  • @MountainRoadRide

    @MountainRoadRide

    2 жыл бұрын

    1) I wanted to go 1x, 2) I didn't want to spend anymore money on a wider cassette. So, it wasn't only a case of lowering the gearing on the outer limit of the range, but lowering the gearing throughout the range. On gravel I can now ride more towards the middel to lower part of the cassette (avoiding constant cross-chaining). Sure, I lost a climbing gear or two, but I don't miss them all that much for where I ride this setup.

    Yeah I eco what Jamie said. This is certainly a setup that I will keep for fair weather days. Rain and bikes just don’t mix well in general, even when using disc brakes. Check out the Tour de Dirt video (kzread.info/dash/bejne/ioGhj7lqZNXQY9o.html) that I have on this channel. After that ride I had to replace my disc brake pads since the mud and rain completely wore out the rear pad.

    How do these tires perform on asphalt and will they wear a lot faster if mainly used on regular roads? Thanks

  • @MountainRoadRide

    @MountainRoadRide

    2 жыл бұрын

    They are fairly slow on the asphalt. You can definitely tell that there is a good amount of extra rolling resistance coming from that thread pattern. I haven’t ridden these on the asphalt enough to notice significant wear, but so far they are holding up well. I suspect that with the extra knobs it will give good long term use.

    Not yet. It will be a while before I’ll get those. Planning on wearing out the 26mm pair first. What I can say is that the 26’s have surprised me a lot with what it can do. 28s will surely be better, and if you can clear it, 32s even more so. Every mm helps on the gravel.

    There's no way you should run 60psi in a 26mm tire with tubes due to the danger of bottoming out, even with sealant, as it comes with other issues besides puncturing. Since it has the clearance, 28mm is definitely the way to go in this case.

    There aren't that many tires in this size that I'll classify as gravel tires. One other option that you can look at is the Schwalbe - Marathon 700x25C tire (bit.ly/31wQw8P). I don't have any experience riding them, but the texture (for grip) and puncture protection looks good on paper.

    Yep, the road-to-gravel bike conversion works well when condition are good, but under extreme conditions it will struggle. If you can run 32mm tires on that bike then you might even be able to fit 33mm CX tires. They’ll be pretty good in the mud.

    Depends on the frame..I have a Domane rim brake model from 2021 and I run 28 in the front and 32 at the back. The 32 graveking sk is too tight on the front and does rub on the frame so opted for 28

  • @MountainRoadRide

    @MountainRoadRide

    2 жыл бұрын

    100% agree with what Sandeep said. It also depends on the brand of tire. I’ve tried some 700x28C conti tires in the past and they inflate much wider than the stated width. I had to remove them due to frame rub. Other brands like Panaracer measure in much more accurately and with them you’d most like be able to get a 28mm tires onto “most” road bikes. Maybe we’ll see all of the change if Crane Creek actually brings these rim brakes to market: cyclingtips.com/2022/02/rim-brakes-for-gravel-bikes-rob-english-and-cane-creek-say-yes-sort-of/
