In the actual show L was absolutely terrified when Misa (as Kira 2) mentioned shinigami, meaning he absolutely believes they could exist and be connected to Kira. Therfore, it's the notebook part that he takes issue with here. L doesn't belive that Light can read.

Well he struggled to understand how such a thing could be impossible. Kira's MO is beyond any normal logical explanation. So in the absence of any logical possibility, you would accept anything. There's just too much that can't be explained so when he heard of shinigami, he took it as "even an outlandish explanation is better than no explanation". He was still skeptical about it until he saw one himself

The only scientific explanation would be that there was a device that could puppet anyone anywhere on the planet give you can focus on there name and face hard enough. This machine would not only need to be able to control people but also there autonomous functions well enough to stop there hearts to kill them. When you consider how syfy that kind of technology would be in our day and age let alone the early 2000s the idea of death gods is actually equally or even more sensible. The only other explanation is a conspiracy of tens of thousands of people across the world killing people with means that don’t leave any evidence, systematically brain washing people months in advance to commit specific actions in a few minute window, and some how coordinate all this to make it look like the act of an omnipotent god without leaving a single piece of evidence.

There is a reason why there are two axis in the "which fictional detectives could solve the deathnote" chart- whether they could figure out Light Yagami is Kira (based on motives, actions, alibis, et al) and whether they could figure out the rules of the death note (which needs you to be able to figure out bullshit supernatural rules, or even just acknowledge that such things could happen).

His answers are always too perfect, too calculated, but an innocent person would probably slip up or say something suspicious or even be scared of being suspected.

Light actually did something similar in the series. He said to L that he believed he is Kira killing people unkowingly in his sleep and asked to be held in prison under surveillance (no surprise it was to let L believe he wasn't Kira)

@@saparapatepeteit was the most far fetched convoluted plan that light legitimately just banked on the entire scenario playing out a very specific way that could’ve been altered if any of the mainly involved characters acted slightly differently. But man’s just touches the death note at the end to get his memories back is like “perfectly according to plan!” Yeah no there’s no way you planned all that and further more no way L didn’t see that disturbingly sus smile on your face as you laughed maniacally for 5 minutes straight after touching the book when he was sitting DIRECTLY next to you.

For me it seems like a desperate gambit to escape suspicion because he figured out L can get information out of the smallest slip and he can't slip if he knows nothing XD.......

L's slow realization that he wasted months of police time and resources while never deviating from his tone is the cherry on top. This is hilarious. Please keep it up.

Okay but this is actually something that might happen in the show; L would overthink it, Light in season one might actually have given into the guilt, and keeping that potato chip secret is a prideful thing light might actually do.

it truly takes a genuine love for the show despite it's many staggering flaws to create a narrative so outlandish yet extremely true to the characters. fuckin brilliant, this. 13/10 will subscribe 🍻

come to think of it, the fact that kira didn't immediately leave the kanto region after L narrowed it down is an important clue - it means Kira cannot move around freely, so he is likely someone with a family they cannot easily leave.

I love how the sanity of Kira's confession just cuts through and destroys the intrigue L is building in his mind :D

This would have made the actual Death Note so much better, in my opinion. Light seemed too one dimensional and evil to be sympathetic to me, so him having doubts and second guessing his own motives would have made for a more intriguing storyline.

Nah, Light & L were perfect the way they were. Not every story needs the characters to have complex motives. Death Note was supposed to just be an entertaining series.

Man imagine the twist if the series just ended with this. Light tries something crazy and just Tells L, this happens, then Light just gets his "I win" face on as L leaves Japan and Light goes through a bit of therapy while still being Kira.

Honestly, this would've been a foolproof plan for Light to win. Why would a high school kid confess to being Kira all of a sudden? I feel like L would just think Light is delusional in being Kira because Kira's so full of pride that the idea of straight up confessing his actions sounds ludicrous.

DN ending is the best part of the whole story

To be fair, L would probably think for a while that Kira somehow found out about Light involvement in the taskforce and is now controlling him to "confess" so L would just give up. Eventually, though, he would realize that Light is still alive and the deaths have in fact stopped, which would make him change his mind and actually believe in Light's confession.

*6 months later when the killings have suddenly stopped after Light confessed.* L: Oh my fucking God all he said was true
