I used to play on a Buffet R13 with a Chadash barrel, M30 P88 mouthpiece, M/O pink gold ligature, and used #3 Rue Lepic reeds. Now, I play on a Yamaha CSVR with a Backun barrel, M30D German mouthpiece, BG Revelation ligature, and use #3-#3.5 Blue box or Mitchell Lurie classic reeds. I guess over time, finding the combination will change a lot for some people.

I have heard that some people who use the bonade inverted lig have the middle section removed. Apparently it helps increase reed vibration.

to me the bonade was the brightest by far. the articulation on the vandoreen leather was tubby. right now i am on a bonade non inverted kick. have you ever tried a luyben? really good and cheap.

I actually like my M/O pink gold, It's easy to use, more free blowing that a BG duo(to me)... and screw screws faster than on duo.

It's interesting to me, the only one that sounded different (and worse) than the others was the Vandoren leather ligature. I couldn't tell any differences with the rest. Maybe they have more of a difference for the player or maybe you have to hear it in person.

The problem I have with the reverse Bonade is that the metal stretches so that the two sides around the screws touch when being tightened. As a result, I cannot tighten it enough. Here is my fix. Remove the screws, place a flat file in between the screw holders, and file the metal down a bit. In a few months, you will have to repeat.

Hi Roy! I used to just get whatever my teachers told me to buy. In recent years, when I go to conventions I will try new "stuff" out, or if a friend (or even a student) gets a new ligature we swap and try out each other's ligatures. And if for whatever reason there's equipment I want to try out but can't find one to test, I make sure it is ok to return the ligature if I don't like it.

Interesting comparisons of different ligatures. Not a lot of difference in sound between them. You left out one that is popular amongst clarinet players in my area (western Canada), that is the Rovner ligature. I have been using them on my clarinet and also my saxophones for more than 20 years. They are not expensive and, to me anyway, they seem quite reliable.

@@callyclarinet Yes, I contacted Vandoren and said they're gonna release a pink gold Optimum especially for Bb clariinet from Septermber, so let's be patient.. I think maybe I get one pink gold Optimum because I already like the sound colouration my pink gold M/O gives and the Optimum will give even more body to the sound.. I don't know.. I'll try when be available.. They also said me If I want a golden gold(completely gold) optimum on Bb clarinet, I can try the alto sax optimum, It's a bit larger but It works..

I’m on a vandoren optimum with a buffet R13, bd5 mouthpiece, and I use vandoren traditional strength 3 reeds. One thing that I don’t like a lot about using the optimum with my mouthpiece and reeds is that you have to have it further down on the reed and tighten it more to keep the reed in place, which puts dents in the reed. Any recommendations on a better ligature?

I don't know if that's right, for a good sound, but it seems like it might be necessary to keep the reed from moving!
