Ligand Field Theory and the Jahn-Teller Effect

We've learned about a number of theories regarding chemical bonding, like VSEPR Theory, Molecular Orbital Theory, and Crystal Field Theory. Now let's look at Ligand Field Theory, which is sort of an extension of CFT. We will also examine the Jahn-Teller Effect, or Jahn-Teller Distortion, which is a phenomenon that impacts the geometry of certain complexes.

Thank you for this short yet full of useful knowledge of chemical bonding video and glad we're continuing with this wonderful series, hopefully the time lapse between releases will be shorter as we get more and more attached as we advance in this topic. What a gift to explain such complicated things so effortlessly and to deliver this content so clearly :)

It’s kind of funny to me that I study chemistry with your videos and not with the stuff my teacher gave me in my native language. So thank you very much for teaching chemistry basically all around the world and I’m really glad I found your account.

Prof Dave will you make a video on SALCs (symmetry adapted linear combinations) and how character tables / projection operators can be used to work out the orbitals in ligand field theory? Also the relationship to Raman spectroscopy

What's so funny about the fact there's no curve? I've lived in the Chicago area my entire life. On a clear day one can see over Lake Michigan from the Michigan shore to the Chicago skyline with as little as a decent binocular. Even better with a digital P900. Based on the "current" mathematical theory of the heliocentric model, the majority of the skyline should be below the horizon limits, however it's not. It can be seen to the bottom from Michigan. Explain that.....

Dear Dave, thanks for the explanation. May I ask a (maybe stupid) question... since I have problems putting the bits together. Why are we considering all these energy changes in the orbitals of the metal when they are eventually being paired with the orbitals of the ligands to form MOs anyways? What does all of the eg ans t2g (and Jahn Teller splittet) levels mean for those MOs?

Well, consider the MO diagram at 3:15. The HOMO and LUMO of the coordination complexes are typically the metal centre's d-orbitals, as shown.

Prof, I don't think you could comprehend how excited i am for your debate with the flat earth conman. From my understanding, he already agreed. My biggest gripe is with his constant misrepresentation of Einstein and his theories. Other than that, great video as always.

Hey I’m here because you turned comments off on a video about transgender theory and I wanted to say something about it. For one I’m glad you made the distinction that gender is not a social construct, because I had mixed it in with the gender roles themselves and I have been calling gender a social construct as well. Also, I disagree on your assertion that comedy shouldn’t be focused on in the conversation. Most times I agree but there are some cases where it can start to normalize anti trans talking points. The example where Dave yells it was a trans after someone threw something at him is a good example of good comedy. But then in a Netflix special you get Dave Saying he’s team TERF. On the one hand you got Dave making a joke and reacting to a situation, and on the other is a planned joke that normalizes an anti trans hate movement. Sorry about invading this video to talk about a different 6 month old video, but you made some great points I wanted to thank you for, and I really wanted to voice my disagreement towards it to you.
