Cone will be used for keeping you in place on the driving seat during rough seas .... if you ever find any.

All of your underwater metal fittings should be electrically bonded together to prevent galvanic corrosion. The skeg should have a sacrificial zinc anode attached to it, as should the rudder if it's metal. The propshaft needs one as well.

The blue cone is clearly for wearing on one's head whilst loopy on exhaust fumes. If any members of the expedition put on the cone its a clear indication of an exhaust leak inside the cab that needs to be addressed as an inebriated man cannot possibly resist wearing a cone on his head.

Fun fact, dry erase ink is just a slight variation on permanent markers. Also I'd like to add that isopropyl alcohol will also clean it off if you don't happen to have any dry erase markers and need to go by something anyway or there is a lot that needs gone.

my first thought when seeing the blue cone is an adapter between two sizes of pipe or vent.

One thing I just thought about: Being a lifeboat and the color, doesn't Alan attract the attention of other sea-goers? It would be slightly inconvenient if all ships around you always come to rescue you :)

A great tip for Sharpie removal is to go back over the mark with Sharpie again and it will all wipe off easily straight away while the fresh sharpie is wet

Suggestion, from a fellow boat builder and open ocean sailor. When adding any grab bars, or any load bearing brackets requiring bolts through the boat fiberglass. Instead of just standard washers. Make a custom large washer. Like on the grab bar 3 bolts on each side. The custom washer should cover all 3 bolts in one plate. This will spread the load over a lager area to prevent softening of fiberglass.

Also add fishing rod stands or something so you can catch fish while while working on something or when boat is moving, a cool electric stove, Rearrange the cables, use more efficient lights, get an emergency box with flare gun, inflatable boat, and emergency ration food, Sea water filter, Canned rations, New and better navigation systems, New dashboard, Binoculars, Some small potted plants(for greenery and experiments), Timepiece/Alarmclock, Storage stuff, Etc

@@AlexHibbertOriginals also cloth washing and drying areas outside boat by the wind with clips on rope, a mechanical wind vane, Cabin fans, Reflective 3M tapes outside, Mini TV & Radio(for weather news & entertainment with a hot tea), Ice saws(i imagined it dont know what for), Tents(maybe not), Toolbox & spare parts on important stuff, Also some sort of plant climber around the boat outside as a decoration, Bring some plants, climbers and record some simple experiments on its adaptability on cold climates as it will be a good subject to talk on during episodes (1 minute very video) for viewers as most of us will get bored. Love your videos and do videos also when shopping for the boat construction supplies as it is enjoyable as well and gives more satisfaction too. Mention me next video for a second. :)

In the future you can get rid of sharpie marks on surfaces that whiteboard marker comes off easily, by going over the sharpie marks with a whiteboard marker and then easily wiping it off.

@@AlexHibbertOriginals sharpies are alcohol based but have a permanent pigment, whiteboard markers are alcohol based with nonpermanent pigment, so when you go over sharpie with a whiteboard marker you rewet the pigment so it can be wiped away again. But frankly, a spray bottle of rubbing alcohol works better

I had an idea for underwater ballast, you could use it to protect sections from being hit by ice, if they’re a concern.

I think the cone is an inlet scoop, so that when Alan is under way at blistering speeds you won't need an intake fan ;)

for long in water protection add some zinc anodes around prop area

Put a shaft zinc between the prop and stern tube. It will protect the bronze and s.s shaft. You'll need to put antifouling on the hull eventually? And for catching a drone at sea, wear gloves. The boat will move way too much to land on the deck. The blue thing at the end is a plug? You can also use kids rugby foam balls.

Yep will do - some are rope cutters too. Antifoul - perhaps. Depends on voyage duration. It's possible some low friction coatings will be better if not in the water long enough for growth to appear.

Cone, part of a dorade box?

Is the cone a downsizer, or a flange for the vent pipe?

The cone, once opened on the small end, will be used as an exhaust hood over the cooking stove.....or the head?

The cone is key component of the cyclonic dust extractor for the duckted vacuum system. Because... your going to need one of those.

I slowly start to think Alex means it for real with the arctic expedition. First I thought he actually just wanted a good excuse to use his angle-grinder but since this is the second video without one I start to doubt myself

Hi Alex another epic contribution to the developing plan all well thought out and brilliantly delivered with clear concise detail - love your style - have you seen the Dick Durham article in Yachting Monthly bought a copy in Crosshaven - I wish I could have made a similar presentation of my 16 days at 15 hours a day conversion of my latest vessel - three months work in a fortnight - crippling for an old codger! As for the cone well obviously a Venturi device to affix to a flat suction area to increase extraction speed 🤪 be back in a few weeks for more hard labour - as for the deck investigation (it may be too late) would it be useful to fit a further escape hatch in the area as more simple access to the secure top platform/runway/drone landing strip? - all the best Dick

Would you consider a deployable outrigger for stability? I could be an inflatable pontoon that is removeable and stowable. A air filled pontoon with a bottom water fillable tube so it is ballasted.

Not really. I'm comfortable with the amount of viewing options, balanced up against strength and keeping heat in.

I'm guessing the cone is for a DIY megaphone so you can yell at polar bears to get out of the way. Or something, Anyway I really like the work you're doing, keep it up :)

You're right that polar bears comply unerringly with broadcast verbal instructions.

Blue cone to be a housing through the upper part of the boat for a fan to be mounted in. PC fan? Just a guess.

AHO On the round bottom boat rocking in choppy seas issue I have suggestion you may whis to look in to? The early submarines had an issue with that and then had boat modification added during construction. They put on two Bilge Keels running horizonialy the practical length of the boat slightly below the water level to make it more stable when surfaced.

10-4 did not think of that, that's why Amundsen"s the "Fram" had a rounded hual becasue of ice.

Blue cone will be a sporty muffler for the engine, to go with the new blow off valve that goes tooo-tooo-tooo when you back off. Should halve the fuel economy, kill performance, catch on every jetty and make the boat irritatingly loud if it's all working correctly.

The cone... best guess is with a cut it can be used as a centrifugal particle separator before the air goes through a filter?

sorry that my comments are coming late, I've been busy making planters and then filling then with good potting soil and then planting some Plum Grannys (Grannies?), aka Queen Anne Pocket Melons, and then waiting for the germination, aka sprouting, to take place. Met with success this morning and then came straight here to catch up. Now, about your excessive use of Sharpie markers on Alan's hull (body? carcass? structure?) I apologize for not noticing this earlier and failing to make the following suggestion sooner: Try using a grease pencil, aka China marker. These write with a colored wax core that works even underwater and can be more easily cleaned up. Well that's it for now, other than to guess the function of the bleu (blue) cone thingy that you plan on using on Alan's ventilation system. I'm guessing a rain/spray cap that will have vent holes and drain holes drilled (cut?) into it. If that's not a good guess please keep in mind that I am dedicating a large portion of my small mind to the shape, material, and construction of a trellis for my Plum Granny plants. Great video. Bye

@@AlexHibbertOriginals part of what is corroding the metals exposed to water is caused by electricity. A sacrificial anode is made of a highly conductive metal and will corrode first. Attach it to your skeg. I was an electronics tech in the US Navy and later a marine mechanic. Find a mechanic that knows about sacrificial anodes, any marine mechanic worth their salt should be able to help.

There's a recent episode all about backup power you'll enjoy.

In the engine compartment you should use the foam with aluminum foil on it (at least) for the engine compartment. You are using the wrong grease which should be "marine grease" not automotive or general purpose grease.

While marine grease and “regular” grease both have the same job, without special formulation that makes marine grease work, regular grease would simply wash out of parts leaving them unprotected and in danger of failure. ... A proper marine grease should have passed ASTM D1264 water washout testing. Marine grease also contains additives such as corrosion inhibitors for both ferrous and non-ferrous metals to protect against rust, corrosion and pitting.

With the attachments you are doing and all the sealants you are using and by their nature having to throw away I suggest you look at a product called butyl tape

I'll restate something I commented to you a while back, since subject matter experts yelling about your mistakes is apparently something you're interested in: That foam "sound insulation" over your engine isn't doing anything but wasting your money and time. Density of material is what stops sound waves, foam is a nice acoustic treatment for reflected sound but it muffles nothing. $20 worth of Dynamat or similar will keep your ears from falling off your head 1000 miles from shore in the middle of the Arctic ocean. It's already a cramped space that's gonna smell bad, no sense in going for the hat trick of suck by not attenuating the engine noise with something that's actually designed to attenuate engine sounds vibrating through panels.

It's a correlation I generally notice between those particularly exercised about their self-aggrandised expertise but very unwilling or unable to look at how decisions can be made for multiple reasons. In this case, that the two different types of foam in the cowling have a fire retardant, panel stiffening, protecting resins from heat, and an incidental noise changing effect that's less hard on the ear. The ultimate sounding-proofing improvement comes once I have enough funding for the cowling cover. It's well known, of course, that echo reduction etc isn't the same as actually deadening or absorbing sound energy. Grateful as ever for your well-meaning contributions.

@@AlexHibbertOriginals Hm, prickly. You'd perhaps be surprised at how few people, even among musicians, actually realize that soft foam isn't going to do much. That myth is persistent. I've soundproofed engine bays before, for whatever that's worth to you, in cars with forced induction and therefore quite a bit more heat in the bay than usual and certainly far more than a little lister engine produces. I certainly appreciate the concerns about heat, flammability, and material life that come with insulating engine bays... and it sounds like you've got that well under control. I understand skepticism about unsolicited advice from the internet, but you were quite dismissive the last time I mentioned it, so I can't help but notice the implication that has on your supposed gratitude. Which I don't mind. But at the same time, I can't help notice a correlation between hardcore outdoor adventurers (especially of the Arctic variety, as I'm an Alaskan by birth and half the people my in my family and people they knew spent huge amounts of time on the north slope, on McKinley, surveying somewhere inhospitable, or mushing dogs, and yes that means the Iditarod) and a real disdain for women encroaching on their little macho adventures. I mean, you weren't there for the Susan Butcher backlash, but my goodness, those boys thought they were being clever.

cones are used for megaphones. everyone knows that. or as excellent telescopes. they can be used excellently to lose unwanted bodily ... uhm ... liquids? or to disguise oneself as a dwarf/garden gnome. I would use them to mount decks lights.
